[font=Times New Roman]Hi everyone,
I have been looking through the Pakistani designer sites, and although the clothes are beautiful and different than Indian clothes, are Indian style clothes still available in Pakistan….for bridal I mean.
[font=Times New Roman]I live in Canada and my family will be visiting Pakistan for shopping in the winter.
[font=Times New Roman]Here are some things I like…..are they available ready made??

Thanks for your help!
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
My very Indian mother did all the jahez shopping for my sister's wedding (which, incidentally, was held in India) in Karachi, becasuse the quality of the karigari and the general aesthetic there is better than in India. And all of her Pakistani friends drool over Indian fashion.
I absolutely aggree with janab-e-ali. The silks and the embroidery used in Pakistani bridals are no where to be found in Indian bridal wear except for a couple of designers like JJ and Ritu Kumar. Unless net with mota loose zardoozi work is what you prefer to pure brocade silks with fine dhabka work and risham... give authentic Pakistani wedding wear a try!
It doesn't matter to me if the outfit comes from India or Pakistan I should re-phrase myself. I am looking for Heavy Embroided Bridal Outfits for my ceremony and reception. Are such items (as in the images above) available ready made in Pakistan??!?
Thanks,
Jugding by the pics I think it's the embroidery. Pakistani clothes don't appear to be that heavy, and have very unique and different designs. Indian clothes (in my opinion) are more trendy and heavily embroided.
Check out the pics. I posted above.
Because many of not a majority of pakistani weddings are "set" and done in 3 months or less (it is only us non-resident desis that plan a year in advance... most of the places have ready made stuff you can come in, pick and then have sewn together. I actually went with the pre-made stuff b/c i was concerned that i may not get exactly what i had ordered...and with the 3 month wait...i wouldn't know until i was back in the US...for the wedding dress i didn't want any surprises...
Ya...I was thinking of purchasing ready made clothes. Once again, are heavily embroided suits/lenghas (INDIAN STYLE) available???
Does anyone have pics of items they have purchased to put up?
Julybride, I am not sure how far you are from Chicago--but you will find a lot of Indian style wedding outfits on Devon Avenue. Although, you will have more choices in color/style/cut/embroidery in Pakistan because the outfit will be tailored to you. On Devon Ave. you will find mostly ready made stuff.
I actually live in Toronto...we have a lot of Indian stores here.. I just thought since my family will be going to Pakistan, the stuff there may be cheaper.
The things I found here, that I like, are over $3000.00! Ouch!
Wow- $3000 sounds pretty hefty but if we convert it- comes to around the range you would pay at a designers for a bridal so its not that scary. Im coming to toronto this week for shopping for a family members wedding. can you let me know where you saw bridal stuff that was nice even if it was in the 3k range?
Make the trip dear.. at least you wont spend $1000 or more on a ticket to Pakistan which does add to the total costs. If you dont find what you like, then a trip to pakistan may be in the works.
Devon Ave. in Chicago isnt too good unless youre into the 'Indian' look. Indian lehengas, even the ones by huge designers like Ritu Kumar, totally look like something a dehati bride who's impressed by all things shiny would wear. Cheap satins and nets made from polyester and nylon...encrusted in gaudy zardozi and sitara work with plastic 'gems'...its such an unsophisticated look.
Most of the Pakistani stuff available on Devon is rubbish too...very low end, ready made stuff being sold for hundreds of dollars. But high end Pakistani beats high end Indian any day. There's so much more of a commitment to using handwoven silks, with well-placed, intricate embroidery in Pakistan...not to mention the fact that Pakistani karigars apparently realize that there are more styles of embroidery out there than just plain zardozi and sitara work. It really bothers me when Pakistani designers try to ape Indian styles...Pakistani style is far more aesthetically pleasing than Indian style, and I really hope they dont lose their good taste in an effort to compete with the Indians. Heck, even Ritu Kumar was forced to admit that Pakistani embroidery is superior to its Indian couterparts, because many of the Muslim families which traditionally practiced these arts migrated to Pakistan during Partition.
That said...Raaz is probably the only store on Devon worth visiting. They feature all sorts of designer collections from India & PK, and compared to them, the rubbish on the rest of Devon just looks gaudy.
Try Dulhan http://www.dulhan.ca/
That’s where I saw the peach lengha that I feel in love with. They don’t have it on display, you have to ask to see the “new” bridal stuff.
Also, the stores on Torbram/Steeles are not bad.
I wouldn’t waste my time at Gerrard St. or Airport Rd in Malton. I’ve been there recently and they didn’t have much.
Hope this helps!
