Least to say he was unsporting. He was being dis-respectful when he snatched the ball from umpire’s hand angrily. He should be held accountable for his action should be dealt properly (at least a fine) and an apology to umpire is due.
Absolutely. At least a 3-match ban is in order, at all costs. Regardless of who the match umpire is, when one is the least bit unsporting in the field as Brian Lara was yesterday when the captain himself is supposed to lead his team by example, then any and all mandatory actions should be taken.
Dhoni’s statement as was captured at Rediff over less than an hour ago:
"Brian then came up to me and said he was taking charge of his players, so he thought I should walk off.
“He said whatever his players said it would be the truth, so then I decided I should walk off from the field. That means he was taking the responsibility for his players, and they were speaking the truth.”
(Title: Lara asked me to walk, says Dhoni)
A sincere apology is due to Asad Rauf, yes. A fine and a ban must be in order, yes.
I think the match referee is Chris Broad the former England opening batsman. I wonder what action he is likely to take or will Lara's status allow him to get away. I think action should be taken regardless as to who it is.
What "status" on earth does Lara hold that will allow him to get away? How is Lara's "status" any different than the captains of the rest of the teams?
While the ICC Referee thinks about it, Asad Rauf Strikes Back...
30.3 Sreesanth to Lara, OUT, appeal for lbw! and Asad Rauf gives it after a lengthy deliberation! Brian Charles Lara is out! It was on a length, on the middle stump line and it straightened after pitching, Lara shuffles across and ends up playing outside the line, beaten by the straightening of the ball and is rapped right in front of the middle, Rauf took his time to decide on the bounce and whether it would have taken the top of the middle, he decided it would have and raised the fatal finger. Replays suggest that it would have hit the top of the stump and a crucial crucial wicket goes at the stroke of lunch. India right on top here.
What I meant by status was a great player or the possibly the best batsman in the World. This also should not be used as a basis for letting him get away with it.
Decision was borderline, as apparently the replays also suggested. Asad didn’t look at the replays, ofcourse. He looked at the ball. Seemed very close to the stumps in its trajectory. He figured in his mind “should I or should I not, give him out?”. And then he remembered the incident, and said “ullo ke pathay ko maaro goli” and raised his finger. Yayy! See, thats why Asad Rauf took his time. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
^ Errm... its not mine, though. So yes, bravo to whoever coined it... which is either Shakespeare (in Hamlet), or Quentin Tarantino's movie distribution staff (for Kill Bill's movie poster). Alternatively it could just be an old Sicilian proverb. Take your pick
The row over the “catch” taken by Daren Ganga to remove MS Dhoni which tarnished the final session of the fourth day’s play at Antigua’s Recreation Ground was the talk of the Caribbean’s newspapers on Tuesday, with Brian Lara’s antics taking centre stage.
Haydn Gill in the Barbados Nation lead the way.
“As the replays proved inconclusive, the decision was made in favour of the batsman. Lara appeared to ask for a further review, and when the verdict went against West Indies, he had a few words with Dhoni.”
The Jamaica Gleaner noted that Lara’s behaviour was less than exemplary:
“So upset was the West Indies captain that at one stage he dragged the ball away from the umpire at one end of the pitch before throwing it to the stumps at the other end as play seemed set to resume.”
In the Stabroek News Garth Wattley endorsed the view:
“Lara descended to finger pointing at the umpires, a pointed discussion with Dhoni and partner Mohammad Kaif and lastly, the angry grabbing of the ball from standing umpire Asad Rauf.”
That raised the question of a lack of consistency if, as most people believe, the match referee choses to do nothing against Lara while 24 hours earlier Mahela Jayawardene was fined 20% of his match fee for a moment of frustration with himself rather than any official.
