So finally shes here alhamdolilah..cant wait to share my birth story..as soon as I get used to this routine..
For now some quick questions:
Does breastfeesing hurt?
As soon as I delivered a nurse checked me and said u dont even have nipples madeembarrassed
She then said during pregnancy u should have massaged your breasts so that by now u would have had nipples:teary1:
Anyways I started breastfeeding and it hurts badly..I have cuts in my nipples now..does it mean that im not doing it right?
I got myself a manual breastpump but even that hurts:cryb: maybe I am not pumping right:hinna:
My milk flow alhamdolilah is great..but is this normal? Mom said Ull get used to it..
Secondly Im looking for an electric breastpump here in karachi does anyone know where I might b able to get one?
And I leak too often tomorrow Ill b getting breastpads for that..but my breasts get engorged alot it hurts badly..I mean I breastfeed my baby I pump still they get engorged..every half an hour:( im so confused and i sound like a nagging baby but aaah:cry:
also, be careful with pumping- manual pumps are brutal, they’re super painful - but also, the more you pump, the more your body will produce milk, and the more engorged you’ll get. you have to be sure to drain the breasts as much as possible while you breast feed your daughter and then if you need to, you can pump for 10 minutes each side at most since you aren’t having a supply problem. if you get engorged too often and don’t care of draining the breasts properly, you can get mastitis which is really painful. these are the signs of mastitis so if your recognise these, get yourself to a doctor immediately to get antibiotics- Mastitis | Ask Dr. Sears®
Yes it hurts but it doesnt have to..my mom also told me that it would get better but I realized tat oboe it didn't hurt to bf so it must have something to do with the position..I even called the child birth center in the middle of night n cried on phone for about 30 mins so the nurse asked me to watch the video online (ameda-latch on on you tube) n yes that video helped me a lot..I was able to latch on my baby n eventually pain went away..I did end up with mastitis later but I was having other issues too ..so yes breastfeeding is a rocket science!
Don't pump too much...the more you pump, the higher will be supply..let the baby establish the supply aNd pump only to relieve a bit, if engorged!
You need to check if the baby is latching properly. For engorgement try using hot pads or warm showers they really help before you feed the baby. It gets the milk going. rather than using manual pump, express milk during a warm shower with hand. Avoid pumping milk if you are feedinge very two to three hours. this will only cause over production. And please stop wearing underwire bras.
I just googled and found out that I have inverted nipples..what now:eek:? I hate myself for being so hard on myself..i let it hurt while bf thinking its normal and now im miserable:hinna: yes the engorged breasts get better when I bf..wont pump now..but nipples r cracked and sore:( I wana cry:(
And I didnt know pumping increased the supply I thought its for expressing the excess milk..neither did I know that u have to massage the whole breast while bf to prevent engorgement..oh y isnt there a manual for parenting:teary1:? Or maybe I didnt do my homework up aheadsigh
One more thing how often should I feed my newborn? She sleeps alot..my MIL asks me to force feed her every two hours even if she is asleep..but she doesnt wake up at all..she does when she wants to..so its like I have to hold her for an hour to try and bf her but without any success..I try to express milk into her mouth but still no luck..im tired now:(
Awww don't be so hard on yourself! Yeah breastfeeding is not supposed to hurt. If it does, it's due to an improper latch. Have you tried nipple shields? I've heard they help with inverted nipples. Also use lanolin ointment for cracked and sore nipples.
Yeah it’s very important to feed her every two hours. You need to wake her up and it’s very very very frustrating because they are totally knocked out but just keep trying. Try massaging her head and rub your finger firmly on her soles. That might stir her up a little. If that doesn’t work, make sure the room is warm and undress her down to her diaper or try changing her diaper. Newborns love to sleep and it’s a struggle to wake them up but they need to be fed every two hours. And when they’re older you wonder why they don’t stay asleep! Hang in there! It gets better!
Do u have inverted nipples? May explain baby not emptying out the breast as it cant get to the milk.... Thus engorged breasts
Try nipple moulds by avent that u can find at zubeidas or babyshop or aga's... Somewhere hi fi.... Or hey...mothercare at the new dolman mall at sea view.
It takes weeks of hard work to make bfeeding work.... And sometimes even then it doesnt happen.
Hey it will get better... As for sore & cracked nipples apply some breast milk on it n let it air dry.
I myself had a left inverted nipple therefore it was hard for my son to latch on which led the breast to become rock solid. I had massage it slowly and downwards, was so painfull & made sure I put in the full nipple in the baby's mouth & only the brown areola area was showing.
Now it's not going to be easy but your lucky your milk supply is great so just keep going...
P.s. I didn't use any sheilds or anything, with 18months of breast feeding the invert nipple has transformed itself & is more out lookin like a normal nipple IYKWM. Lol
I took a warm almost hot bath and massaged my breasts for a good half an hour..emptied them..so its better now alhamdolilah..but she just wont latch on..my MIL gave her formula in tommy tippee bottle a couple of times in the past few days..can that b the problem for the latch? Cause since birth she was atleast trying but now she just wont take it:eek: whenever I try to feed her.. give the nipple deep into her mouth still she doesnt stay still..she just moves her mouth and crys badly even though milk is coming out of the breast..
Sahr, do you bring the baby to your breast or do you take your breast to her? Make sure to bring the baby to your breast and while you're holding her with one hand, make sure you hold your breast firmly with the other hand so that as she moves her mouth, your nipple stays in one place. She will eventually find the nipple and start sucking. Be patient, it's a learning curve for both you and the baby. Don't be disheartened! And if it works great but if it doesn't, it's not the end of the world!
Chery even if the nipple is in place and she is sucking but leaves it after 2sec although milk flow is there..and yes khwateen I dont want to give her the bottle so yesterday I had to pump and fed her with a spoon..so the moulds would affect the nipple aswell? Then I gota check them out
Sahr, my lactation consultant told us to put our pinky finger in Jr. mouth, with the nail part down on his tongue and touch the top of his mouth and see how his suction is.
Maybe you can try doing that and get an idea if your baby is sucking. Plus with someone giving her the bottle, nipple confusion is also caused which causes a lot of prob for the mother and it means more cracked nipples.
If she stops after 2 seconds maybe your flow is too fast. You mentioned you're engorged so she probably feels overwhelmed with the fast flow. What you could do is pump for 5 mins first then feed her so your flow isn't too fast.
Yeah as others have mentioned, the shield will eventually turn out your nipple after which you won't need it.
Lots of hugs sahr. I hope these painful days pass quickly for you. Dnt beat yourself up, I dnt have any advice but lots of love. I wanted to reply and give you hugs
