who will without a doubt, break or for good, get rid of their televisions because of the negative influences of media and a waste of time when non stop news analysis and series of futile, tasteless and unrealistic in fact bad programs are being screened?
this brute method is necessary because the magnitude and the extent of this ill has got so worse that children today refuse to play or be interactive with care givers and they are already into programming that borderlines on adult ways of behaving.
for instance, nickelodeon’s and false entertainment such as idol shows for children to badly loose self-esteem or doubt their capabilities that may not be ‘IN’ merely because the ‘IN’ things are dictated by other un-becoming negative social pressures.
no alig_reinvented behan. i dont donate tv to tv watchers. :>
my God, kids are being really hurt by this.
it is extremely unhealthy on many levels.
and until and unless its damage has not come about, people dont realize.
no?
Aunty, people who can't control their habits blame such things for downfalls. I think you are personally dealing with this problem, so you think its ok to assume everyone else is. Its not true.
I agree with you that TV has infact affected the kids in a negative way but the parents are as much if not more responsible for it. There will be Tv and so much more but its the parents who are there to give discipline in the kids lives. We can't discard TV just because of that but yes we must and we can control its usage. HOwever most parents are not strong enough to do that and instead they put all the blame on the tv. Thats not fair.
The only solution i see is that parents start giving more time and mind you nt just time but useful time to their kids. They should encourage interactive stuff over TV from an early age so that the child doesnt get addicted to the tv.

I totally agree to you that tv is having bad influence on children but on the other hand its a kind of necessity as well. There are so many educational programs which children can watch and learn.
In my opinion children always try to imitate their parents. So I believe that parents have to change their habbits in order to change their children.
Its not hard to discipline children if you do it from the beginning. My girls are allowed to watch max 1 hour in a day. But we have filled up the rest of their day with books and experiment kits. I spent a lot time with them explaining the scientific concepts. They are in bed by 18:30 and asleep by 19:00. Does this hinder with our plans; absolutely! but this is the price you have to pay to do thing which you think are right.
So the idea is to change your habits first. Lead by example.
light bearer and Maham S, you make sense.
leading by example and sensible balance is the key.
otherwise, not only is watching too much tv and bad programming negative but it wastes times and electric energy. that is very irresponsible if the t.v. is running on merely to run on.
people also forget that they deprive themselves of fun and fresh air outdoor time as well quality family times together, when they rely on t.v. watching all the time.
& of course eye sight goes bad and grows very weak by incessant t.v. viewing and you will see that is the trend in many homes where kids are not called on, when they sit too near the t.v. screens and watch t.v. for hours at end.
dush dinn they disprove the theory of TV and eyesight?
TV is fantastic, relevant news, info..history, developments in science and business, access to cultural events u would not be able to see otherwise. sporting events which are of amaing talent but in a diff continent ..
Well impact of TV is not only of physical nature, but it is changing us socially. The amount of time we use to spend talking to our parents, children, spouses and others, is now we spend in front of TV. The amount of information we are getting out of it is very minimal compare to the time we spent.
It is a very major issue in all societies all over the world that our social capital is decreasing day by day. It is a very slow process that takes generations, but it impacts us right on our core values, as a society.
Nice thread Dushwari.
It took me a year to get rid of TV completely and at that time my older son was around 18 months.
I know its not easy for everyone to just throw their TV out but there are things they can do to avoid the bad effects on their families.
There is a possible involvement of early exposure to TV in attention deficit therefore American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of two shouldn’t watch TV at all.
But there is also evidence that good educational programmes can create a talking point between parent and child, and stimulate babies and toddlers to activity by copying the actions they see on TV.
Watching TV can also help toddlers in speaking only if parents watch with them and talk to them about the programmes.
In the first few years, genuine interactive first hand experiences are much important than technological toys.
Remember that children learn by doing, not watching.
TV should be kept in a living room and not in bed rooms, survey results in the US and UK range from 30 percent of four-years-old and under up to 80 per cent of over-fives, and the figure appears to be going up year on year-with computers and other equipments not far behind.
American researchers suspect that bright lights on television sets and computers can reset the circadian clock, changing the sleep-wake cycly.
Italian scientists have also found that these lights block the secretion of the sleep hormone, melatonin, which usually begins as it gets dark outside.
From the University of Coloumbia in USA, there’s evidence that too much television watching has a knock-on effect on sleep problems later in life. They found that late-night TV leaves children in a state of ’ hightened alertness ’ at a time when their minds should be winding down, preventing them from developing natural sleep patterns which would otherwise become ingrained, so they’re more likely to have sleep problems throughout their lives.

I’ll try to type more about a few points including exposure to violence, sex and consumerism through TV, inshaAllah.
