Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

I think Mushtaq's reinstatement (at Inzi's behest, seems like another free ride at PCB's expenses) was the last nail in the coffin and I am not surprised that Waqar has over-reacted. It has a lot to do with personal ego and perceived personal hurt. As they say in English 'too many cooks spoil the broth' and when you have a full-time coach and a bowling coach is there really any need for an assistant coach in the present set-up? Yes Mushy is very knowlegeable about the game and everything but I am not sure what his precise role was going to be in the presence of the other two. As for those who say he could bridge the communication gap between the coach and the players don't forget you also have a team manger who's job is precisely that.
If anything we need a full-time fielding coach cum physiotherapist.

Chote (Mushy) zara garama garam chai aur do samose to ley aaeen, jaldi kareen............

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

But I agree with Waqar when he says

'It's about time the PCB management learned how to treat players with respect' This is the gist of everything

I would have thought after the Younis (Khan) incident that Nasim would be more respectful of the players' (respect is a two-way thing) sentiments but sadly that does n't seem to be the case. Miandad and Zaheer (made a scapegoat after the Oval incident when Nasim and Shahryar himself were present at the scene) similarly were n't treated with dignity by the PCB. It's another matter that Woolmer has turned out to be a good coach. It is clear to everyone that those at the helm of PCB be it Shahryar Khan or Nasim Ashraf have big egos themselves and lack man-management skills.

Who among ex-players would really want to be associated with PCB?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

It is so fking hard to be a Pakistani Cricket FAN! It is so hard. These unprofessional, unethical PCB, Management, team players are all so fked up in their dealings and it makes it so fking hard for a fan like me to support these idiots.

Fast bowler unhappy with PCB

Waqar resigns as bowling coach

Cricinfo staff

January 6, 2007

Waqar Younis has resigned from his position as bowling coach of the Pakistan side with immediate effect, days before the start of an important three-Test and five-ODI series against South Africa.

Waqar returned from performing Hajj in Saudi Arabia to Lahore and told Nasim Ashraf, the PCB chairman, of his decision. Appointed to the position in March last year, before Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka, he is thought to be unhappy with the PCB’s decision to retain him only for the Test series against South Africa and not the subsequent series of five ODIs.

Speaking to local TV channels, he criticised the board. “If I am not needed for the ODIs then I don’t want to do the job. The board doesn’t look respect its ex-players properly.”

A PCB official confirmed the news, telling Cricinfo, “Waqar spoke to the chairman and told him he wanted to be appointed for the full tour.” He added, “He offered to resign if he wasn’t retained for the whole series and the chairman accepted.” Another official made the ambiguous assertion to TV channels that this was a decision for the team management and the board could not get involved.

Whether or not the reappointment of Mushtaq Ahmed, the former Pakistan legspinner, as assistant coach to Bob Woolmer is a factor is open to question. Last week, Mushtaq was reinstated for the entire tour to South Africa as well as the World Cup shortly after, barely three months after Nasim Ashraf removed him, days before the Champions Trophy.

Waqar also expressed, as recently as September, an interest in a coaching position at New South Wales, Australia. The interest appears mutual, as Dave Gilbert, NSW’s chief executive, has already said that he wants Waqar to replace Anthony Stuart, who has left to take charge of Wellington in New Zealand.

Waqar responded at the time, “It would be great to work full-time in NSW. I am very much interested in the job. When I finish my contract with Pakistan I will speak to David [Gilbert].” That scenario would be an attractive one for Waqar, as it would provide him the opportunity to return to Australia, where he is otherwise based with his family.

Speculation will almost certainly filter through over the next few days, but it is worth noting that the first time the PCB officially considered appointing Waqar as bowling coach, there also resulted considerable friction. Nearly two years ago as Pakistan prepared to tour India, Waqar was in negotiations with the board for the job. But it ended in considerable acrimony, Waqar walking away disgruntled at not being offered the long-term role he envisioned, the PCB instead insisting on a series appointment only.

Waqar, 35, is one of Pakistan’s most successful bowlers ever, famed for reverse swing and his partnership with Wasim Akram, and one of the prime reasons for Pakistan’s success during the nineties. With 789 international wickets, Waqar is second only to Akram as Pakistan’s leading all-time wicket-taker in Tests and ODIs. He was a less successful captain, overseeing a shambolic 3-0 series defeat to Australia in 2002-03 and a disastrous 2003 World Cup campaign. He was removed immediately after and announced his retirement in 2004.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

I think this decision is more than ego issue. Actually, he wants to join NSW as bowling coach before world cup, so that after world cup if Glen McGrath may show interest in NSW coaching.

Otherwise, it is totally understandable that a bowling coach could provide tips and training during test series, but for ODI, when a bowler only bowl 10 overs, I dont think he could do much. Additionally we all knew SA tour is short less than 2 weeks for ODI, in such case it is better to have him in Pakistan and spend time with bowlers in National Academy. Anyway, every one is looking after their own personal interest, and he has full right to do what is better for his family.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

Problem of ego's on both sides I think. But nonetheless, a very bad event right before the series against SA and the World Cup. Umar Gul learned yorkers, and extra's were cut down during Waqar's rein, and I think most importantly, Rana's resurgence under Waqar has been tremendous and Rana himself credited 'Vicky Bhai' for that.

I don't know when the day will come that us Asian people will think of the country's benefit first...its always a clash of ego's, eg, Inzi-Shoaib, Younis captaincy saga, and now Waqar resigning. Seems like whether its Shehriyar or Nasim, problems never seem to go away...

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

They just want to make sure that we really are fans and not just barsati maindak (seasonal followers) :D

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

too many coaches spoil the team! :o

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

It is becoming an unfortunate repetitive pattern that just before the start of an important over-seas tour, a major phadda occurs. Its like our team does not want to start a series with an umambiguous plan of victory.

I don't care who is right and who is wrong, but this unprofessional way of dealing with issues gotta stop. Otherwise I suspect that just when Pakistan is embarking on their World Cup airline flight, we will hear that Woolmer has resigned. Or that Inzi has refused to play Super Sixes part of World Cup. Or some other crap like that.

Although I never liked Waqar as a person (he was chichora #1 in his hey days), he was a terrific bowler, and had visible impact on the performances of some of our younger rising stars (Umar Gul, for ex).

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

Samad,
Thanks for posting the video. great quality audio and video
I don't understand how mushtaq (spinner) is going to help fast bowling specially in SA tour. we will see the results soon.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

Too Bad :smokin2:

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

I dont understand the double standards…On one hand Waqar Younis was told that he will only be retained for Test Matches and then Mushtaq Ahmed was retained for the whole tour…This is absolute BS

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

Vicky probably has the biggest ego's of all but on this occassion he reacted like any other normal person.

I wish Vicky aka ego-monster all the best in his future endeavours.

Lollywood has finally found their Dr Evil (Inzi) and his MiniMe (Mushtaq Ahmed), these guys have a future if they ever do retire from cricket.

Dr (U gotta be kiddin me) Nasim Ashraf shall be dubbed henceforth as Lord Flip Flop from Asslikenstein.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

this is a strong statement to be made.....you did not like him as a person because he was a chichora? how do you know that he was chichora no 1 in his hey days? do you have any personal information in this regards? I mean it is not fair to declare someone an idiot or chichora without citing any particular reference.....I have been following pak cricket for last 20 years with great passion and i really do not recall waqar to be a chichorra person.....wasim akram, salim malik, ijaz ahmad, amir sohail were cheap but waqar usually kept a low profile without causing any headlines (except drug issues in WI and again akram was the senior most player in that incidence)

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

why do you need so many coaches anyway.what the hell is bob woolmer doing..sitting on his a and farting?.i think waqar has'nt helped the bowlers in the team who need help for example mohd's sami under waqar has lost more confidence and became a much worse bowler than he already is.pakistan does'nt need waqar.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

Your love for Sami speaketh over n over.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Waqar Younis resigns as bowling coach

I was looking at the Yankees roster.
They have a coach for practically everything e.g. :
Bench Coach **
*First Base Coach *
*Third Base Coach *
*Hitting Coach *
*Pitching Coach *
*Bullpen Coach *
*Special Pitching Instructor *
*Special Assignment Instructor *
*Head Trainer *
*Bullpen Catcher & BP Pitcher *
*BP Pitcher *
*Coordinator, Pitching *
*Hitting *
*Defensive *
**Massage Therapist

I wonder why cash-rich Cricket teams can't have that many coaches and trainers e.g. for...bowling(one for spinners, one for pacers), batting(opening, middle-order, tail-end coaches), fielding, running, bench, wicket-keeping etc.

So Waqar Younis can be fast bowling Coach, Mustaq can be Spinner Coach...problem solved.
Javed Miandad can be given the responsibility of hand-signalling Woolmer's instructions from Pavillion (a Hand-signalling Coach i.e.). Any other ex-player with a bruised ego can be made the bench coach.

It reminds me of Coalition state Governments in India with jumbo-size Cabinets created to appease all parties involved.
