Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"'

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

^ The fear is that PCB appoints another big-money-coach and the team wastes the opportunity.
I think Cheemi DNA will opt for Aaqib this time. However I would like to see Whatmore...

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

Whatmore has already expressed where his interest lies, and I don't think so any Int'l coach (Wright, Whatmore, Fletcher, Moody....etc) would take interest in coaching Pakistan team.

PCB itself said earlier they want a domestic grown coach, and later they said otherwise. IMO there are only two coaches who qualify Aaquib or Intekhab-alam, one is from grandpa ages, so there is experience alot of it. and Aaquib has some measure of success at the academy and coaching stints (under 19 WC's)

No matter whom they sign in for coach or captain, they should assign a batting and a bowling coach/ specialist. it would be great if they can find a fitness guy from anywhere and stick with Pakistan team for a long time (atleast 1 year time period).

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

It wont be long before Shaibi Actor retires from International cricket and we can certainly appoint him as the fitness coach after that... just my 2 cents :D

Re: Breaking News…Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to “The Nation”

^^ :hehe: and on laptop he will write a book “How not to stay fit for dummies.”

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

Saleem: you are dead right that I didn't read your message completely. Just a mere look at your long posts with all the nice decorations, styles and font-weight give me a bloated feeling I hadn't had since I spent a night at a Tikka shop in Pakistan. Do you honestly expect me to read ALL of that, over an argument you are currently being outweighed by a factor of 10?

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

By the way (Sa1eem), I like your style of arguing. You seem to start each one of them by "agreeing" with whomever you are arguing with, and then telling them how they are wrong. I can't express the same fondness for the length of your posts though.

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

Sa1eem...
To be honest you havent really discounted what i said to you...

Your still prioritising the individual performance of a cricketer over their ability to manage and captain a team...

You stated that the player should live up to some benchmark so therefore the only people worthy of captaincy in reality based on your logic are Shoiab Akhtar and Mohammad Yusuf...

And even if we were to debate on ones personal performance i wouldnt simply decide it based on averages...I mean Taufiq Umar averages 40...i hope you arent calling for his captaincy...

Shoiab Malik is more than talnted enough to get into the Pakistan side...he just needs to stop being pissed around...he needs to decide where hes going to bat...hes significantly more talented than most batsmen in that team and he is more than worthy of a place in both a test or one day team...
He would havebeen opening for us if he wasnt injured...

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

Counterpoint, I am wondering about your recommendation for Captain. Its not enough to say that Malik should not be the captain....you should also mention who should be appointed instead.

All the "possible choices" out there have something in the "cons" column.

Under the circumstances, in my opinion Shoaib Malik (though not perfect) is the best choice.

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

some1, only problem with Malik as a captain is that, we don't know who will be the coach of Pakistan team, which is like playing bluff or betting on a blind horse to win the race (team 11 players, not only the captain). We all know how easily the public get irritated, and if they loose to low ranking team, knives are sharpen like in WC 07.

We need someone to guide Shoaib (if he is the captain) and the whole team through rough times and let them not to get carried away with 1 sweet smell of victory.

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

^I personally believe that most Pak players are enormously talented and gifted as far as their cricketing skills go (no, I am not saying this for effect). In my opinon, the ONLY thing that is needed (regardless of who is the Captain/Coach) is to enforce an army-like discipline on the team. There is just too much ego problems, bickerings & badmouthing, groupism etc......these things have to STOP. PCB needs to come down with a zero-tolerance policy on all of this.

Re: Breaking News…Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to “The Nation”

In contrast to the earlier report, Yousuf says he is fine playing under anyone as Captain. This atleast creates an air of unity among senior and junior palyers.

Yousuf has no issue if someone else is captain](The News International: Latest News Breaking, World, Entertainment, Royal News)
By our correspondent
KARACHI: Mohammad Yousuf, the Pakistan cricket team’s star batsman and former captain, said that he has played cricket as a national responsibility. “If the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wants to appoint a junior player as the future captain, I absolutely have no issue with it,” he stressed.

He was speaking to the representative of a national Urdu-language daily on Monday on telephone from Lahore. The 32-year-old Yousuf, who has led Pakistan in three Tests, said that his first preference was to see the green Pakistan flag flying high.

He said “I wish to play for my country for as long as possible while I hope that my bat keeps on piling up runs.” Yousuf, who has appeared in 75 Tests with 6,553 runs and scored 7,908 runs in 236 One-day Internationals, said that he has never put himself forward as a candidate for the captaincy.

He told the reporter that all he said was that if the PCB wanted him to be captain, he would be happy to accept the responsibility. “I have never been greedy. I want to serve my country, whether as captain or as an ordinary player, that’s enough honour for me.”

Since Inzamam-ul-Haq’s resignation from the national ODI team’s captaincy and Younis Khan’s refusal to take up the job, Yousuf has become the side’s most experienced player. The PCB, however, is looking for a captain to take them to the next World Cup in 2011. Shoaib Malik is a strong candidate for the all important job.

Here is the same from Jang Urdu.

Re: Breaking News…Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to “The Nation”

Osman Samiuddin at Cricinfo just confirmed the news - Malik and Butt were the 2 candidates and Malik seems to have gotten the job…

**
Shoaib Malik has emerged as the leading candidate for the Pakistan captaincy after discussions between Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials over the weekend. An official announcement on the decision is expected within the next two to three days.

The appointment, if Malik agrees, is likely to be till September, when the situation will be reviewed again ahead of a hectic international season which includes a full series in India and a home series against Australia.

The discussions centred on Malik and Salman Butt but it was narrowed down to the former as Butt currently does not hold down a place in either Test or ODI sides. “In principle, a decision has been taken to offer it to Malik. There isn’t really another suitable candidate around,” one official told Cricinfo.

“We have a few assignments in the pipeline over the summer. There may be a series against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi and a match in England so for that we are talking about Malik. In September, ahead of the home season, we will review the situation again,” he added.

Nasim Ashraf, chairman PCB, refused to confirm or deny that Malik will be offered the captaincy but said that a decision was imminent. “No decision has been taken yet,” Ashraf told Cricinfo. “We will make the decision in the next two to three days.”

Whoever does become the captain, Ashraf added that he will take charge of both the Test and ODI sides and is likely to be appointed, initially, on a series-by-series basis. "We will have one captain for both. I think in Pakistan cricket, it is advisable to have one leader in charge of both sides.

“Initially the appointment will be on a series-by-series basis. But eventually, before the India tour later this year, we will make a longer-term appointment,” he added.

Though Malik has only played 18 Tests, in a number of different positions in the order, he has been earmarked for leadership by a number of people over the last two years, including Bob Woolmer. He has, however, become a vital cog in Pakistan’s ODI outfit and has been among the most consistent batsmen for Pakistan in that form of the game since 2004.

There is a concern that senior players might not so readily accept a younger player as captain but at least Mohammad Yousuf, who said recently he was willing to become captain if it was offered, has sought to play down those fears. “If the PCB wants to appoint a junior player as the future captain, I absolutely have no issue with it”, he had told reporters on Monday.

“I have never been greedy. I want to serve my country, whether as captain or as an ordinary player, that’s enough honour for me.”

Younis Khan was originally in place to take over as captain after Inzamam-ul-Haq’s resignation and retirement from ODIs, but he turned down the offer citing the mental strain of taking on one of cricket’s toughest jobs.

Chalo…good news!

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

^ This shows that Pakistani newspapers like 'The Nation' (who first reported it 3 days ago) and 'Dawn' are more credible atleast on certain issues than we give them credit for.

Re: Breaking News…Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to “The Nation”

Typical lack lustre leadership from PCB…“we will see”…

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

Yeah ur right about typical PCB.....my guess is they're unsure on both Salman or Shoaib and they're trying to cover their own butts in case it doesent work out....I think its silly either way - because firstly if Shoaib Malik is the man to lead then you should support him all the way, give him a one year contract as Captain at the very least...this series by series crap will only give the 'senior mafia' the opportunity to gang up and try to remove Malik....if it suits them.

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

^ I think Ashraf is hoping that Younis will reconsider his decision by then. I certainly hope for our cricket's sake that Younis does. so it may be a wise decision but let's wait and see.

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

Come on yaar, how can you want Younis as captain after all the nonsense he's pulled over the last 6 months? Not to mention his ODI record....Younis as Captain is the last thing Pak cricket needs.

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

After all of this being said, I looked up Malik's average in both ODIs and Tests.
He averages 37 in Tests.
Given he was only in the playing 11 , 18 times in tests.
Out of these 18 matches, Pakistan batted 33 times (3 being innings + wins) and Malik got to bat only 26 times. of which he scored 941 runs.
5 times 50+
1 times 148 not out in SL - Match was drawn.
5 or more times he score in the 40s.

So how do we say he does not have a test spot. I say he is as much a test player as any one else can claim to be who has played 50 plus tests.

So our problem it that we are looking for a Superman to rescue Pakistan. That can't happen. We won't find one. Many things have to be changed for "ANY" captain to lead this team to consistent wins over fierce oppostion.

I think he is as good a choice as any other. Come to think of it, I would take Malik (dull and boring) over a "Bi-Polar" type who looses it when it counts the most. What he will need is good support from a "REAL" elected board. Not some chimps dressed in suits.

Re: Breaking News....Shoaib Malik Gets Pakistan Captaincy according to "The Nation"

Yaar test cricket is the real deal and Younis Khan averages a healthy 48+ there and his one-day average (31.15) is not as appalling as many think. Jayasuriya an all-time one-day great averages only 33. Vaughan averages a pathetic 26.56 in this format but he more than makes up for it with his shrewd and intelligent captaincy.
