I think the entire drama was just to make these dheet and besharam players realize that they are not indispensible.Initially, I was a bit taken aback at the way the PCB had handled this entire affair and that too in another country. But I just hope this proves to be helpful for the upcoming lot and the youngsters.

Doping Ban Against Akhtar And Asif Lifted
**Shoaib and Asif acquitted

Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif have been acquitted by the tribunal appointed to review their drug ban appeal. The decision was made two to one with Hasib Ahsan and Justice Fakhruddin Ebrahim in favour of the acquittal.
“This appeal committee [therefore] holds that Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif will not be deemed to have committed a doping offence,” Ibrahim said. “The ban and punishment imposed by the earlier tribunal is hereby set aside as being contrary to the provision of laws.”
Ibrahim said the committee found it was “clearly, plainly evident that Shoaib Akhtar nor Mohammad Asif were ever warned or cautioned against taking supplements.” Neither player was “even provided with any international or local publication warning them against the use supplements,” the committee was quoted by AFP. It was the committee’s “considered view that Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif have successfully established that they had an honest and reasonable belief that the supplements ingested by them did not contain any prohibited substances”.
Shoaib, banned for two years, and Asif, for one year, appealed after they were found guilty for testing positive for the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone in dope tests that were internally conducted by the PCB at the end of September.
The ICC did not have any immediate reaction. “Malcolm Speed is currently in Uganda and we can’t comment on the issue unless we have all the details,” said Brian Murgatroyd, the ICC spokesman. “We need to go through the judgement and also get the PCB’s version before making any comment.”
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), in charge of monitoring drugs in sport, said they needed to discuss the matter with the ICC. Frederic Donze, their media relations officer, told Cricinfo: “We will now review the reasons for the decision, liaise with the ICC and consider whether to exercise its right of appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”
The lawyers of the two players presented arguments before the tribunal headed by Justice Fakhruddin G Ebrahim and including Hasib Ahsan, a former Test player, and Dr Danish Zaheer, the president of the Pakistan Sports Medicine Federation. Shoaib and Asif were twice made to fill out questionnaires sent by the members of the tribunal regarding their use of the drug.
The original tribunal which had imposed the ban was chaired by barrister Shahid Hamid and included Intikhab Alam, the former Pakistan captain, and Waqar Ahmed, a doping expert. The ICC had applauded that decision, saying that it was an appropriate deterrent where the threat of drugs to cricket was concerned. "It is a good judgement, well written, very professionally done and they have made constant reference to the guidelines laid down in the PCB’s anti-doping code,"Percy Sonn, the ICC president had said.

Shoaib and Asif won’t be rushed in - Ashraf
It’s unlikely that the two would be considered for the ongoing one-day series against west Indies. I think that’s a sensible approach. Both have n’t played any cricket for almost three months and are unlikely to be match-fit.

Is this a sign of things to come for PCB?
WADA investigates Shoaib case
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is to take up the doping cases of Pakistani fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif with the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The two players were exonerated of doping charges last night by a Pakistani appeals tribunal.
A WADA official told a Pakistani newspaper that the appeals commission’s decision appeared to be unreasonable and a violation of the international anti-doping code.
“We have decided to take up the matter with the ICC. My personal view is that the decision taken by the Pakistan Cricket Board panel is unreasonable,” WADA official Fredevic Donze said.
The tribunal, headed by a former judge, cleared both players of doping offences and lifted their bans after finding them not guilty of taking the banned substance nandrolone intentionally.
Donze said WADA would first look into the decision of the tribunal before making further comments.
He said WADA had asked its representative in Pakistan to obtain copies of the judgement by the appeals tribunal.
Shoaib and Asif were banned for two years and one year respectively last month by a drug inquiry tribunal. They were called back from the Champions Trophy in India after testing positive.

Re: Breaking News: Shoaib and Asif cleared of doping charges
I believe he is not that Shoaib we know and seen, he is really changed. why i think he can be useful this way because only precense of Shoaib and Afridi keeps others busy to change their plans against them and in the meanwhile, Shoaib Malik, Razaq and Yousaf gets some runs ![]()
khuch bhi ho Ehsan bahi, he has done good job for Pakistan, so give him reward of that!
Re: Breaking News: Shoaib and Asif cleared of doping charges
tribunal was not set up to judge how big an a hole shoaib is.intikhab alam was way out of line when he made those comments about shoaib.and shoaib is much less of a a hole now than he used to be.he has become more civilized in recent time.there was a time when he would lose temper for nothing and start cursing at people even at people who asked for his autograph, hes not that ganwar anymore.

Drugs in cricket
Sonn critical of Pakistan board’s ‘inconsistency’
Cricinfo staff
December 6, 2006
Percy Sonn, the ICC president, has criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board over inconsistency in handling the judgement involving Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, the fast bowlers who were acquitted by the Anti-Doping appeals committee.
“**The judgment highlights inconsistencies in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) anti-doping processes and regulations,” said Sonn. **"Cricket has taken significant strides forward in addressing the important issue of drug use in our sport.
However, this judgement emphasises that much more work needs to be done to educate players and to synchronise our members’ efforts to attain a totally drug-free sport."
Sonn hoped that the other member countries would avoid similar discrepancies. “It is vital that cricket takes heed of the judgment and that the lessons it provides are disseminated amongst all our members. Of primary importance is that all those members revisit their own regulations and align them both with the ICC’s Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code.”
He was also keen that players around the world are not caught unawares in the future. "The issue of player education is also of vital importance and the ICC will, with WADA’s continued assistance, do its utmost to make it easier for our members to provide this service to their players and officials. The key fact is that it is vital for all our members to maintain a zero tolerance on the use of drugs in our sport.
“That is the idea behind the ICC’s drug-testing regime at all our events since 2002 and our adoption of the WADA Code in July of this year. I would now urge all our Members to ensure appropriate action is taken so cricket can show just how committed it is to being known as a drug-free sport.”

What will the jokers at the PCB do to avoid this sort of drama occuring again. Will it be fair to say that the second judgement may send wrong signals to up and coming players in Pakistan who are not aware of the dangers of taking such drugs. Some may take it intentionally or others may be given without their knowledge and may feel that nothing will happen to them or may get away with it and use Asif & Shoaib as an example.
Re: Breaking News: Shoaib and Asif cleared of doping charges
^ Unless these up and coming players have spent the last few months on another planet, they should know now that using ignorance as an excuse for positive tests in the future just won't wash with the ICC and quite rightly too. So either they educate themselves/others and take extra care with what they take as supplements, medicines in the future or risk being banned/disgraced by ICC's anti-doping committee.

The International Cricket Council has criticised the way in which the doping case involving Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif was handled by Pakistan.** An appeal tribunal lifted bans imposed on the two fast bowlers after they tested positive for a banned steroid.
But ICC president Percy Sonn said the judgement highlighted “inconsistencies” in Pakistan’s anti-doping processes.
A member of the appeals panel also believes the pair should be tested again before they resume their careers.
The appeals were upheld by a 2-1 majority, but Dr Danish Zaheer, the panel member who voted against clearing the pace pair, said: “The PCB should set aside all the previous inquiries conducted following the charges against Shoaib and Asif and opt for fresh dope tests.”
Shoaib was originally banned for two years and Asif for one year but both claimed the steroid, nandrolone, had been present in supplements they had used.
In a 30-page ruling, the panel accepted neither player had knowingly taken drugs.
Commenting on the decision, South African Sonn said: "Cricket has taken significant strides forward in addressing the important issue of drug use in our sport.
“However, this judgement emphasises that much more work needs to be done to educate players and to synchronise our members’ efforts to attain a totally drug-free sport.”
He added: "It is vital that cricket takes heed of the judgement and that the lessons it provides are disseminated amongst all our members.
“Of primary importance is that all those members revisit their own regulations and align them both with the ICC’s anti-doping code and the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) code.”
Pakistan Cricket Board president Dr Naseem Ashraf has insisted his organisation support a tough line towards drugs.
“Many lessons have been learned and the PCB stands by its zero tolerance policy regarding the drug abuse and hopes that the theme of ‘playing true’ will be followed by all cricketers in its true letter and spirit,” he commented.
But Wada spokesman Fredevic Donze described the appeal tribunal’s verdict as “unreasonable”.
Former Pakistan batsman Rameez Raja has also voiced concern that the rest of the cricket world will see the lifting of the bans as “eyewash”.
“I think they have messed up the whole issue and once again Pakistan is in focus for the wrong reasons,” he said.
Former Pakistan captain Mushtaq Mohammed, meanwhile, said Pakistan had been made a laughing stock by the affair.
“There was no need for this whole doping drama,” he said.
“A competent committee was chosen to deal with the guilt and now suddenly the second committee overturned the ban.”
Shoaib and Asif are now free to play for Pakistan again but have not been chosen for Thursday’s one-day international against West Indies in Faisalabad.
