^ Although I agree with you if they uphold the ban, but normally the appeal hearing is held soon enough. And if it is atleaset reduced to 3 ODIs or 2 ODIs then Shahid would be in a net positive from the appeal.

The question is what are the chances of the ban being reduced?

I either case Afridi and the Team should learn the politics of the game now. They need to become more shrewd in how they complain about sledging in time and not even look at spectators.

AA I know what you are saying but that's the least (the minimum ban is 4 ODIs or 2 tests) Afridi could have got for this kind of offence. It's unlikely that Afridi would be exonerated and whoever's appointed to hear his appeal won't be able to reduce the ban i.e. it's an all or non phenomenon so appealing against the ban does n't make any sense.

Some of you might say it's (appealing's) worth the gamble because barring a complete disaster (I mean even if lose against WI we should inshallah still beat Zimbabwe and Ireland quite easily), Pakistan should make it to the super-eight stage and if Afridi misses the first of their seven super-eight games so what, Pakistan would have still 6 more games to qualify for the semis.

So maybe PAK SHOULD appeal and try and win the series against SA and not worry about Afridi missing first 4 WC games

This is all Malcom Speed's decision. He's the 1 who brought the charge against Afridi. The umpires/Broad himself at the ground didn't think much of the incident but Speed had other ideas after seeing Afridi's tremendous hitting

Afridi’s behaviour was dangerous and irresponsible and he deserves to pay the price. But at the same time he also deserves to play in Pakistan’s World Cup campaign, which luckily begins with two official World Cup warm-up matches. This means that Afridi could well be available for the opening encounter of this year’s World Cup, the match against West Indies, if the warm-up matches count. At worst, Afridi will miss only one crucial World Cup match, the other being against Ireland.

Reading from what Kamran Abbasi wrote, it looks like that there is a slight chance that the 2 warm matches could get an official status although I was under the impression that they will definitely be unofficial.
But than again KA himself seems not sure that if it is going to be official or not. So if he doesn’t know yet it probabaly means that they are going to be unofficial.

Although we are not sure yet but if that truly's the case then PCB/Afridi should most definitely appeal because even if the ban is upheld Afridi would only be missing one meaningful match - the first game of the WC against WI

If Afridi has to play WC, then it is crucial for him to get as much practice as possible on Windies wickets. Missing the last match of the first round against Ireland and the first match against England in Super 8 will not help him at all.

I think he should sit out in these 2 upcoming games. If the World Cup warm up games agaainst Canada and South Africa are unofficial (which I think will be ) then he should play in these 2 games to get some practice.

but I believe winning (we don't win many games against them as our 14-30 record proves it) against SA (when Afridi is in such good nick) is equally important. It will give us tremendous boost ahead of the WC.

That said, I think it has become fashionable these days to accuse ICC of racism. Indian/Pak/SL boards are more racist than ICC can ever be because they support each other on disciplinary issues and project a regional bloc which is totally against the spirit of an International Game. One reason why I think Darrel Hair's suit has some merit.

Why does the Western World have to be more politically correct than the Asian Countries.

He got away with it. Getting or even trying to get physical with anyone should be dealt with the strictest of penalties. I would have banned him for 8 ODIs.

I was about to say the same thing. He actually got away with it. Malcolm speed did make it clear that its not all players fault and thats why he is only banned for 4 ODI's. He also made it clear to the SA management then he dont want spectators to be that close to the players in the future. Level 3 ban constitutes for 8 ODI's or 4 Tests so speed has been nice to him, give him some credit.

Kamran Abbasi at cricinfo is suggesting that the two warm up matches in the WC might count towards the ban meaning Afridi can play in the opener against WI.

I think Abbasi is BS'ing as usual. I don't care much for his blogs either.

I truly agree with most of you about the unfairness of ban on Afridi. Perhaps, Mr. Speed has added one more responsibility of being an assistant match referee. I didn't know it before.

Anyhow, Pak, in my opinion should not appeal since it's not going to affect them greatly considering the fact that we're going to play the first 2 games against reasonably minor sides. InshAllah, we'll be able to deal it out and yea, not to be favoring Afridi, he shouldn't have done it but once again, he's a Pathan as said by Ramiz Raja but tempers are always to be kept inside especially when you are in foreign land. That's what I think and and I'm very much open to change my opinion and learn from others.

When would these Pakistani players learn to control their tempers and not to respond to stupid comments by spectators? It is so easy to alter Pakistan's batting and bowling line-ups. Just plant some ah*e near the player's box and let him say something and our stupid shining stars will respond and screw up.*
