Re: BREAKING NEWS : Gilchrist announces his retirement
Gilchrist was good and wonderful for cricket. Unfortunately his record will again be broken the next test South Africa plays and Boucher takes the record back. Boucher still has many years of test cricket ahead of him and will certainly set the bar extremely high when he finally retires.
Re: BREAKING NEWS : Gilchrist announces his retirement
I guess its a good move even though he could played much longer. A great player and what I most admired about him was his sportsmanship. He's one of those rare guys who will walk without looking at the umpire when he knows he's out. Plus, I have never seen him sledging in a negative way.
A great cricketer, who changed the role of a wicket-keeper batsman forever. Truly a legend.
Re: BREAKING NEWS : Gilchrist announces his retirement
^ It was not about the record.
Gilchrist's pure destructive ability with the bat will always be missed and he will leave a big hole in australian team. Hats off for unlimited moments of brilliance Gilly!
Re: BREAKING NEWS : Gilchrist announces his retirement
The use of the word Legend is used soo to frequently amongst sportsman nowadays, no doubt his ability with the bat and gloves was second to none.
Being part of a nucleus of great players over the last decade, doesn't make him a legend, an aggressive, attack minded cricketer in both forms of the game, yes.
Re: BREAKING NEWS : Gilchrist announces his retirement
Someone who is a world record holder is a candidate for a legend.
Gili didn't have any plans of quiting. In fact he did say he is available for the next few years in his interview. It was after he broke Ian Healy's record. This retirement has more to it than what meets the eye.
Re: BREAKING NEWS : Gilchrist announces his retirement
A sudden retirement? He is leaving big shoes to be filled, the next wicket keeper will sure be under tremendous pressure. He will definitely be missed!
PS: Big sigh of relief was heard in Pakistan's dressing room.

so Viv Richards is also not a legend!
c'mon it's not Gilly's problem that he played in an Australian team boasting several other great players like Warne, McGrath, Ponting and Hayden. He re-defined the role of a wicket-keeper batsman. He changed the pace of test cricket scoring runs at a strike rate of almost 82 (most batsmen would be proud of that in ODIs!)
*And scoring runs in three straight WC Finals probably means nothing to you either. *
Re: BREAKING NEWS : Gilchrist announces his retirement
Can't these Aussies learn anything from our Desi legends....
Never leave on your own accord.....play on until you become a liability and are hounded out.
Re: BREAKING NEWS : Gilchrist announces his retirement
And the amazing thing is that Gilly achieved all that (414 dismissals*/96th* Test) in just over 8 years!
He made his test debut against Pakistan on 5 Nov. 1999. That’s an average of 50+ dismissals per year, a tribute to his great skill and ability. It is also a reflection of the amount of test cricket played by Australia esp. in the last decade or so.
