Cricket-Second drug test confirms doping charges: PCB Chairman

ISLAMABAD, Oct 16, 2006 (AFP) Two internal drug tests conducted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the presence of banned substances in fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf told reporters here. “Shoaib Akthar and Mohammad Asif have tested positive as per preliminary tests for nandrolone which is a banned anabolic steroid,” said Ashraf. “The PCB had asked for reconfirmation of the test from the Malaysian laboratory (where the tests were carried out) and we have been verbally informed 15 minutes ago that the reconfirmation is also positive.” The board had suspended the two players with immediate effect and withdrawn them from the International Cricket Council Champions Trophy 2006, Ashraf added. “The players will return home on the first available flight,” he said. Pakistan has no current system for doping offences but will set up a tribunal to decide how to punish Akthar and Asif, Ashraf said. “The International Cricket Council has a ban of two years for the first offence but we’ll go step by step, form a committee which will look into the evidence,” Altaf told reporters. “We don’t want to end the careers of Shoaib and Asif. We will do a complete investigation and then decide the matter.” Pakistan deserved credit for immediately revealing the positive test results on two of its key players, the cricket chief said. “We did not cover it up… We don’t care about losing or winning. We need to educate the players because this is s very serious offence.” The PCB said all-rounder Yasir Arafat and left-arm spinner Abdul Rahman had been finalised as replacements. Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Would you like to explain how Shariyar was responsible for it and what proof do you have.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

and the fact that Mohammad Asif was also 'tested positive' has got nothing to do with it. May be Sachin should also take PED so he could see the 200MPH (oh wait it was 100MPH... no, it was 95 or was it 87MPH?) bouncer coming his way.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Look at the bright side fellas. Even if this is a mistake, its better to be discovered by your own people rather than someone else.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Cricket is not unlike Baseball…and we all know about the Barry Bonds situation. A bit of extra muscle comes in handy in any outdoor game.

I had started a thread on this subject in the past :

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

No I don't have proof of that just like I don't have proof of the existence of pain or God...but its the un-checked and chaotic enviroment he and his cronies fostered with singular aim to enrich and reward themselves that lead to these debacle after debacles...

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

I guess Asif was also using PEDs to enhance the swing-generation… :hmmm: now lets check the English bowing attack, Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patel, Vaas, McGrath too.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Asif is certainly a surprise…he comes across as a sincere hard-working youngster. But I do not know him personally to make a judgement call.
And like I said, a bit of extra strength sure helps to get through long spells of fast bowling…That no batsman or spinner was charged adds credence to this theory.

Correction, you are bringing that thread for Bashing.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

and that no one else came recovering from injury says nothing I guess.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

That is the only intriguing part.......but batsmen/spinners get injured too unless you meant that fast bowlers need some "special medication" to recover.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Tunnel vision.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Someone is crying as if Shoaib was under influence of PEDs when he hit Tendulkar/Lara with his bouncers :CareBear:

Read this:
This is not the first tournament when ICC has tested for drugs. We started in 2002 at the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. We’ve tested at two more U-19 World Cups thereafter. We also did the test in the 2004 Champions Trophy in England as well as the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.”

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

They were discussing it on Sky sports and a sports medicine specialist was saying that this particular drug speeds up reccovery after injury by strenghtening muscles or adding layers of muscles.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Their injuries are far severe compared to batsmen. Is there a surprise that its fast bowlers who get injured most?

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

well given the condition of wickets in this tournament not having shoaib and asif is probably not going to cost pakistan too much.whoever wins the toss and bats first will win the game because wicket will become unplayable in the second innings.
i still don't understand how you can you do something like this and not know the consequences, the doctors, the coaches everybody should know what is being given to these players.i blame bob woolmer for not knowing what was going on,his gora a should know what treatment these players are being given ..i mean if it was some moron like javed miandad i could understand him not knowing much about steroids and icc regulations, but bob woolmer should have known.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif have tested positive for the banned steroid **Nandrolone.

**Nandrolone is an anabolic steroid, which means it builds and repairs muscles, so it can help make people bigger and stronger, and it can lead to increased aggression.

There are lots of potential benefits for a fast bowler - not least increased speed while playing and quicker rebuilding of muscle while recovering from injury.

In other words, while taking nandrolone could not magically enable a bowler to reverse-swing a ball or pitch it on the perfect length, it could allow them to practice and play for longer, to bowl faster and to bowl more aggressively.

It could also speed the recovery of a player from injury.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

^yeah and it can also shrink your balls if you keep taking for a long time.so all you kids out other don't get too inspired by shoaib and asif and start using it.lol

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Captain it doesn’t effect on eyesight :hehe:

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

And the hits keep on coming....seems like the bottom fell out of the Pakistan team and all hell broke....

Extremely trying times for Pakistan cricketers, team, management and public. Why has everything gone wrong all of a sudden? Bad things happen to the best people also but moreso to those who either ignore basic principles of discipline or set low bars of acceptance. Pakistan has consistently allowed indiscipline to be ignored again and again, individual was more important than the team or the game, cronyism was blatant, match throwers were treated with soft gloves, mediocrity ruled and forfeiting test matches was considered to be an act of great pride instead of being treated as the last act of a tragic play. Maybe Iam being overly pessimistic, maybe Iam right only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, we cannot stay on the same path, something has to change and maybe its already happening.....

By the way, for the less informed and melodramatic guppies Pak cricketers have been using drugs in one form or the other for a very long time and the same can be said for other teams, now that times have changed players will either have to adapt or be sent back...
