Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

^thats not true ..it can help you if you are a fast bowler...fast bowling does involve a lot of stength.it can prevent cramps and injuries which a lot of fast bowler suffer from and also aid in your recovery after a long spell.i took steroids too once when i was having knee pain while running ,guess what the knee pain disappeared and hardly felt tired after a long run.but ofcourse its pretty dangerous and one should not take it other than for short term use.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

The worse part of it all is that now they are discussing a possible Mohammad Sami as replacement.. .OH MY GOD…!

http://www.dawn.com/2006/10/16/welcome.htm

But the thing to not understand is that they are not replacing either of the 2 fast bowlers with the Fast bowlers…hmmmm.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

If it turns out that Akhtar and Asif knew what the doctors were injecting them (if that's how they took in these substances), then the doctors should be equally penalized, perhaps severley. However, if Akhtar and Asif were not complicit and it's gross negligance on the doctors' part, then they (the docs) should be publicly hanged mad

What exactly is Nandrolone?

Dileep Premachandran

October 16, 2006

Though the results of the B sample have yet to be confirmed, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif testing positive for Nandrolone is just another peek at the dirty subterranean world of professional sport. With cricket only recently getting tough on drugs, you can rest assured that they won’t be the last big names to be hauled up.

What, though, is Nandrolone, and why have so many elite athletes tested positive for it in recent years? According to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) system of nomenclature, the anabolic steroid has the name 17b-hydroxy-19-nor-4-andro-sten-3-one, and can occur naturally in the body, albeit in minute quantities. Structurally, it’s very similar to Testosterone, the male hormone that was recently the buzz word in sports bulletins after Floyd Landis, the Tour de France winner, tested positive for excessive levels.

Like Testosterone and Creatine, the amino acid that Juventus’s football team were alleged to use regularly in the 1990s, Nandrolone too increases muscle mass. It can also produce the same side-effects, like overly aggressive behaviour, as testosterone. Clinical experiments have been conducted in the past to see its efficacy in the treatment of HIV-affected men and also for other diseases that cause muscle wastage.

The tests for Nandrolone, which involve urine samples, are considered positive if the level exceeds 2 nano grams per ml, the limit set by the International Olympic Committee which is considered the maximum possible in natural cases. Most positive tests have involved athletes with levels hundreds of times above normal.

Those caught in the past have included Linford Christie, Olympic 100m champion in 1996, and Petr Korda, the Czech tennis player. Football, though, has had to endure the most scandal, with Jaap Stam, Edgar Davids, Frank de Boer (The Netherlands), Fernando Couto (Portugal) and Josep Guardiola (Spain) all having served bans for nandrolone use.

The testing procedures have not been without controversy though. Athletes who have been caught have often cited the use of Creatine and the consumption of protein shakes as the reason for positive tests. An Aberdeen University study suggests that they may have a point. According to that, consumption of dietary supplements in conjunction with heavy physical training can result in the athlete returning a positive test for Nandrolone. As with many drugs, including THG that was involved in the infamous BALCO case, our knowledge is far from comprehensive. And as long as that remains the case, the protestations of innocence from those caught may just have a ring of truth to them.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

It will be hard for them to get out of this and moreso for the doctors overseeing Shoaib and Asif’s treatment have no excuse for using Nandrolone. While managing the fitness of any sportsman they would have been well aware of international guidelines of it being a banned substance but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if they deliberately took the chance and used it to cut corners in their recovery. There can’t be any mistake or ‘wrong drug’ BS here. Its nothing short of sheer negligence and essentially tampering with both a players career and a nations’ chances of sucess in the international arena. And moreso with the recent fiasco’s this only adds more shame to us. They should be shot.

It will be very interesting to hear Shoaib and Asif’s side of the story when they decide to speak.

Shoaib protests his innocence

Cricinfo staff

October 16, 2006

Shoaib Akhtar has protested his innocence, after it was revealed he had tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid Nandrolone, during an internal dope test carried out by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

**“I cannot say much at this time about what has happened but I just want to assure everyone that I am innocent of doing anything I shouldn’t have,” Shoaib told bigstarcricket.com. "The President of Pakistan has asked me not to comment in any detail at this stage and I want to respect his wishes, so I will keep my message short. **

**“All I can say is that I have not knowingly taken any performance-enhancing drugs and would never cheat my team-mates or opponents in this way. I have always played the game fair and I give 100 percent and do not feel that I need to take drugs to help my bowling.” **

Shoaib, along with his team-mate, Mohammad Asif, has already been sent home from the Champions Trophy, leaving the Pakistan squad in further disarray, following the chaos that surrounded the appointment of Younis Khan as stand-in captain earlier in the month. “I am gutted to be missing the Champions Trophy,” added Shoaib," and I will return to Pakistan to see what has happened and what needs to be done."

**His pleas of innocence were backed up by a statement from his private doctor, Tauseef Razzaq, a reputed physiotherapist and sports medicine specialist, who told AFP that the positive test results probably stemmed from the medicines he had been taking to aid his recovery from injury. **

**“Akhtar is definitely innocent and I can vouch for him,” said Tauseef. “He doesn’t know anything about medicines, and since he recently suffered ankle and knee injuries, he must have taken some medicines which are painkillers but come under the banned substances.” **

Dr Razzaq was hired by Shoaib in 2004, a move which attracted criticism from the PCB. He added that Shoaib had returned two negative tests, at the Champions Trophy in England two years ago and after the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

“Akhtar is so valuable a cricketer and is conscious of the fact,” said Razzaq, “so I don’t think he would take anything intentionally. Since he bowls at a venomous pace he also knew he would always be a target for a dope test.”

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

First of PCB took right action and in timely manner. A tournament as big as mini world cup is not that big of a deal but to save the nation from disgrace. They (Asif and Shoaib) would have tested positive with ICC and looking at past experience Mr. Speed would have ban Pakistan cricket for next 5 years.

On the other hand its perfect timing to groom the youngsters such as the 3 bowlers from U19. I wsih I wish I wish they could send Jamshaid and the other guy I forgot his name, not Anwar in replacement for Asif and Shoaib.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

inshallah fastest and Asif will be cleared from this . i am sure its the drugs that were given to them for the speedy recovery... inshallah lets hope for the best. Allah naa karay fastest kaa itnaa sad exit hoo cricket say :(

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Big big disappointment. Really big. Chop doctor’s balls and block their use of testosterone PEDs

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

This is a body blow. If you consider that Warne was banned for one year in 2003, this hurts our WC chances as well. What a horrendous occurrence.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

having read some of the posts here, i’ve kinda been outta of the loop with Pakistan Cricket due to my geographic locality and hence i am curious to know why there is some much angst againts Sami?

This question is asked with sincerety and honesty…i’m curious as to why?

Has he performed incredibly poorly recently, more so that other bowlers or did he do something to offend people?

I’m intrigued.

any objective answers would be helpful in helping me solve this mystery.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

What an incredible mess? extremely gutted................this has been the most turbulent two-three months in our cricket history. Unless the PCB/players' defence lawyers can come up with a plausible excuse for an humiliating finding, both Akhtar and Asif look set to be banned for a minimum of 1-2 years by the ICC. This unfortunate saga has effectively put paid to our chances in the CT and WC. It seems incredible to me--if true--that this is the first drug test performed by the PCB. Now most cynics will doubt the capability that Shoaib Akhtar always demonstrated - venomous pace.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Sami has been given repeated opportunities to succeed but he has yet to produce a match winning innings. His bowling is marked with lack of control, lack of appreciation for the situation in the game and lack of openness to coaching. Bowlers with lesser skills, such as Rana, have listened to coaches and improved their bowling by bowling straight and not fast. Not Sami. The man has no variation in bowling and tends to come up smallest when the team needs him most.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Hate to burst your bubble but even if they were “perscribed” for injuries, both will end up serving some form of punishment and hence being branded ‘guilty’ regardless of the reasons as to why. Therefore this dark clould will loom over pakistan for a long time.

P.S. Everyone, get ready for the sledging and harrassment that’s likely to be thrown our (the pakistani supporters) way by oppenents (india, australia etc). my i suggest to ease the pain, stay away from cricket forums!:hoonh:

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Although shocking to say the least...
we should keep in mind the fact that pitches in this tourney are so crazy that all a team needs is bowlers with reasonable pace and line/length control. YOu really don't need extreme pace. So Pak still has a chance if they keep their nerves...

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

stupid Shoaib ! :)

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

Cheers TUMS. I appreciate your feedback.

Re: Breaking News: Akhtar, Asif called back to Pakistan!

It certainly helps if you want to bowl...sorry chuck at 200 Miles/hr.

That Akhtar was implicated among all players (note that the tests were conducted in Malaysia) makes me 100% convinced about the authenticity of the test.

Not for nothing the man looks like a charsi.
