Brand Consciousness - status symbol

Whats the obsession with brands in upper class? from clothes to water everything revolves around brands.

Moreover, people have a habit for showing off their status by calling everything they possess to be imported from this and that country (The item may have been purchased from Landa Bazar or Light House though).

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

Now don't tell me you drink anything other than Perrier.

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

Whats Perrier? Soft drink?

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

:hat:

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

Sparkling water. (Water with fizz like coke). The only brand that counts.

You don't wear Bata?

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

Yes. But its a local brand and by no way it is taken as status symbol

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

Bata is available in India also.

Time for a Perrier.

Brands are generally better quality and expensive. So if you have money what better way to flaunt it.

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

You right that if one can afford expensive item he can go for it. The problem is when brands become an obsession.

I've recently observed that even the writers in their stories started introducing characters as under: 'usne Gap ki blue tea shirt pehni hui thi... aur Gucci ki ainak uss per boht saj rahi thi'.

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

I thought so too but Bata is NOT a local brand. It's a company from the Czech Republic. I've seen their HQ which is close to Prague.

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

I think there is a place in Punjab namely Batapur and didn't know that Bata is an international brand. Anyways, the brand has never been used for show-off as it offers variety of shoes which can be affordable by people with low to medium income. I think, Bata might have lost its market share to upper class segment due to introduction of foreign brands in market

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

You are right. I have driven through Batapur on my way from Lahore to Wagah Border. The town was named after Bata because there is a Bata shoe factory there. See this: Batapur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. I also had not known that Bata was an international brand because prior to my first trip to the Czech Republic I had only seen Bata stores in Pakistan.

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

which brand is this hat?

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

un jaise logoN ke liye hii shaayad yeh kahaavat banii hai:

"khaali ghaRe ziyaada khanakte haiN" loosely translated in English as "Empty pots rattle/clatter a lot"

matlab those who are hollow from inside make more clattering sounds like an empty pitcher does.

Urdu meN ek aur kahaavaT hai:

**"jis men jitnaa zarf hotaa hai vo utnaa hii Khaamosh hotaa hai" **ya'nii ochhe log hii ochhii baateN karte haiN

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

well said. I heard that in higher societies people are more interested in the brand / designer of clothes instead of the person who wear them. You might have heard Shaikh Saadi's hikayat in this regard

Are you Bata is Czech? Wasn't it an English brand. It's been goin since partition.
Agree about the writers using brands. It's just lazy on their part..

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

You see many people don't know about Bata being international brand.. so upper society don't value this brand because their ego hurt when they use anything made in Pakistan

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

Showing off about branded stuff doesn't only exist in upper class only these days, Its there in all the classes. Maybe people feel good about themselves by increasing the value and show and tell about their possessed items. I don't really understand what really happens by telling others the price of their things or should I say 'branded things' Do those people think that their value gets increased in front of others by doing so?

Its evident and clear that the people belonging to the upper class can easily afford expensive and branded items hence people understand and believe them. But when someone belonging to the lower class tries to show off and increase the price/value of their things in front of others. One can't help but laugh at them...knowing its untrue..A persons worth and value doesn't increase or decrease by the kind of things they posses, there are those people who judge and get impressed by seeing other peoples valuables and the other persons perceptions and worth change accordingly in their eyes.

Re: Brand Consciousness - status symbol

well said.. Now give some examples of reputable brands affordable by low income groups
