Everyone talks about it in Pakistan! How could we possibly prevent the best heads of our country move to someone else’s shoulders?
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
Pehle to welcome... :)
second... can u elaborate ur question plz
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
Answer: By giving it the protection of a skull.
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
Compensate them enough to keep them there. That will happen only when the rishwat and sifaarish system leaves Pakistan, which is impossible.
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
What's different about India that brain drain doesn't happen there?
Salaries are about the same, so you can't argue that.
India is about as corrupt as Pakistan by most rankings, so it's not the corruption.
The main thing is an environment that makes people want to stay. Civil stability and security.
Re: Brain Drain !!!
the more i learn about PK the more I think my country is very similar, but only about the bad aspects…
…
to avoid brain drain the most effective is to remind people of their roots and show them all they will lose by immigrating, hide from them positive impacts of immigrating…and having heavy bureacraty that prevents max of people from emigrating…I would suggest also stopping teaching english at school, so that people can’t go somewhere else, but well these are jokes? I mean in an open world, open markets means wealth and so you can’t prevent people from going where they want and the truth is in our old world, ie Europe and Asia, we are overcrowded, so as freedom is space..the new world will allways drain our best brains out:crying:
Re: Brain Drain !!!
lol, aren’t indian migrating to the West? there are more indians than pakis in france for ex!..but civil stability and security are of course nice…lekin we have them in France and that does not prevent brain drain, ie 1/5 of our master/phd holders migrate after graduation!
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
Well, true, but that's where sifaarish and rishwat comes in. If you pay someone to get you a job and you don't even qualify for it, and I on the other hand am denied of that job when I qualify for it, then ofcourse I would want to leave the country and go somewhere where I am given a job based on my talent, not by paying someone.
If people don't accept bribes and recommendations and only give jobs to people who deserve them and have the talent, then I don't think anyone would want to leave. Besides, those few people who do get jobs based on the talent, they are not paid enough. So they either start accepting under the table payments or leave for another country where they think they are being paid enough.
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
Hmm, intersting comparison with India. Has anyone been to India among you. I have been there. People are quite different there. Men don't want to eat women alive like in Pakistan, people generally are much content with their lifestyles. It doesn't take much to cheer them, eg, watch their Cricket matches, Stadia get full in even their Test matches! interesting!
Re: Brain Drain !!!
Indians are migrating, but it is a less pronounced effect than in Pakistan. More and more highly educated people are choosing to remain in India. Indeed, there is a rising number of cases of reverse migration where Indians move back to India after being permanent residents or even citizens abroad.
The retention of intellectual capital has been one factor that has allowed India to experience such rapid economic growth.
Pakistan and India were roughly on par in this regard until the late 1980s. India only began to shoot ahead when Pakistan began experience severe instability in the 1990s in the aftermath of the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan.
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
I feel that Pakistan's educational system needs a thorough re-seeding. We are simply distributing pieces of "assurance" in the form of degrees there. I believe that 80-90% of the so-called educated people (with degrees) don't even deserve to be called educated! Some of them can't even spell correctly. Those easy degrees make them feel that they are above anyone else around them, they won't even think of working under the level pre-determined by our society yet when they go overseas, they drive taxis, wash dishes, serve at servos etc etc
Re: Brain Drain !!!
well as long as the Taliban problem is not solved and also involving the PK frontier area…it’s not going to improve a lot:crying:
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
l-26, are you Pakistani or Indian?
Re: Brain Drain !!!
but that’s more due to the racist, protectionist attitude of the host countries…I mean a foreigner will allways get a lower position than a national..in any country, it’s highly unfair, but that’s reality…![]()
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
clogg the drain:D
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
Shikra, I'm Pakistani. And Parissenor, I didn't say that they should be offered jobs overseas in balance with their abilities, its the willingness of Pakistanis to work hard overseas than in Pakistan, that makes my head spin. The degrees we receive in Pakistan are worth nothing to me. Our Phd's are perhaps at par with college graduates in the west, don't you agree?
Re: Brain Drain !!!
sorry i never studied in PK, so I don’t know…but if it’s true that’s sad…
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
This is how I look at it:
Rich people in Pakistan make a lot of money and poor people do not make enough to have 3 meals a day. Those people who have the talent but don't get a job there, they come abroad, lets say to US. Here, some get great jobs but some don't. For example, since you mentioned doctors driving cabs, lets go into details on that.
I know a Pakistani guy who was a doctor in Pakistan. His clinic didn't do as well as he thought. So he came to US. Now, to become a doctor here, he had to pass the 3 exams. While he was studying for the exams, he started driving a cab because he had to support his family. Cab drivers make good money, we have some cab drivers here on gupshup.
Although that doctor has passed his exams and should be doing residency, he's not doing it. Guess why? Because he's making more money in driving a cab than he would be making by working 18-24 hour shifts. Some people prefer mone while some prefer position and title.
Now, this doesn't mean all desis are cab drivers, mind you. I know a lot of doctors (one of the best special heart surgeons in US), businessmen, accountants, IT, and many more professions. Not all of them are here because they weren't paid enough, but some are here because they wanted a different life style.
Re: Brain Drain !!!!
So, in a netshell, I believe that a credible educational system will not create tons of graduates, and we'll have more people going the fields of Carpentry, masonry, plumbing, surveying, etc. These are the skills that build nations not buld hopes like MA's, MBA'a or MIT's. People find work, not just wait for the best to happen to them like that!
Re: Brain Drain !!!
That’s what my parents keep on saying about french education, damn are France and PK that close?
