i think he should go through with it. and be more assertive himself. rather than being a coward and saying he cant manage things.

are you saying that being assertive will bring peace to his wife?? the woman who is still ''would be wife'' will give in when she becomes the wife?? is her attitude likely to improve with an assertive man??
