Any recommendations for baby bottles for a breastfed baby. I want to start pumping for my newborn during the day and nurse him at night time…he is only 10 days old..we tried dr. Browns but he couldn’t latch on,I guess milk flow was too fast for him…we have tried giving him pacifier too but he won’t take it so I mot sure if he is too young or what?
I heard about calma by medela but it’s not available in the us..
Any other suggestions? Anyone with similar experience? How did you manage? How often did you pump?
Congratulation.
NUK is pretty good for new borns. My daughter had a problem using the bottle but she likes it. The NUK nipple is very soft and it was recomended by the ped. She still does not take the pacifier,so don't know which paci is better.
GTG I swear by Tommee Tippee, they are the closest to breastfeeding. I was pumping and breastfeeding Jr. from day one and did that till he was a year old and we never had nipple confusion ever. Women were actually surprised that he would still breastfeed even after being fed from a bottle.
I pumped when I was full (don't know if that makes sense) coz it takes time for the milk supply to kind of get regular and I was soo sore and in pain. Pumping reduced the pain a lot and in a few weeks Jr.'s appetite increased.
Also I bought medela's breastmilk freezing bags, I used to date them and lay them flat in the freezer (they were awesome for spacesaving) and also easier to defrost. Hope this helps
Thanks a lot...I was thinking of that too, good to see someone with a positive experience. My baby likes to be nursed all day long whi h just leaves me sore and in pain that by evening I avoid feeding.
I have the medela freezer bags too..I stored some milk in the beginning because I couldn't nurse him on one side due to soreness n I tried that with dr. Browns bottle but he startled n I panicked :$
Oh ur having the same issue as me, Jr. only latched on to one side, the other side was soooo bad I had severe bleeding but I did keep up with pumping on that side so that I wouldn't have a prob with milk supply (but to be honest there was a difference in the two coz Jr. would nurse on one side and not the other).
Also keep trying and another tip that the lactation consultant gave me was that in every feeding get Jr. to latch on both breasts. This way he doesn't prefer one over the other and also they remain even (this may sound weird but some women have kids feeding more on one side and that leaves their breasts unequal and you notice that more once you stop breastfeeding)
Ask away if you have any other questions.
He is more like a snacker..he wants to be fed every hour but that too for only 10-15 mins and then falls asleep. And doesn't open his mouth no matter what I try. The lc told me the same thing but considering our situation she told me to let him finish one side since hind milk is more nutritious. I feel like I am just feeding him all day long.
So how much milk did you give him in bottle? 2-3 oz every 2-3 hours? I can't tell how much he needs to eat at this point since for now it's just feed on demand. I feed him at the very first hungercue just to avoid crying!
I pumped whenever I was full. Another thing that worked with Jr was that I let him get hungry especially since he was doing the same thing as ur baby. he would fall asleep while feeding and we were back to the same thing in less than an hour so hubby told me let him get hungry it was hard for me to let him cry but the great thing that came of it was that he took to the breast like a hungry kid and kept at it till he was fed and that started giving me 2-3 hours and more in between feeds.
Also another thing that lc told us was that not to introduce any pacifier till he has breastfeeding down. It causes nipple confusion and we actually experienced it, plus when he took to feeding I would be badly bruised coz he would suck like he was sucking on the pacifier and that was horrible. What we did when we were travelling and I couldn't feed him was that we gave him our pinky finger (cut the nail real short) and have the nail part on his tongue with the finger on his taalu area and he will suck (that actually helped his sucking ability and helped me too)
You have to train him for things that make both your lives easy and doable.
I had the same issue....I would nurse my son for like an hour and he would be fine for 30 minutes and then would start crying again....this went on all day for almost 5 weeks and we both finally learned what to do.
Tommee Tippee is awesome for breastfed babies. I used it with my son from about week 2 and never had a problem with him getting confused between breast and bottle.
I would suggest that you not buy their anti-colic nipples .... I found that they had a tendency to collapse.... just buy their regular kind.
As for the pacifier I agree with automne77.....don't introduce a pacifier until he gets bf down... after that the only one my son would take was the avent one.
Hubby is on his way to buy the tommee tippee bottle. I tried giving him a pacifier during diaper changes since he poops after every feed which means changing him every hour n with circumcision I take extra caution n longer to change where he ends up crying till he gets breathless. But nopse he kept spitting the pacifier out n didn't want it. Instead we use finger n even for that he bobs his head left n right so much like he is starving.
Thanks girls...I wish newborns came with a manual!!!!
I used NUK when she was a newborn and they worked well.Used them for about 3 months. Then switched to Dr.Brown's.
She never took the pacifier, although I bought the NUK one.
I used (still do) the playtex ventaire advanced with the slow flow nipple. works great ... no issues with breast to bottle transition.
same here. the ventaires were the only bottle that deal with his gas and that he could drink properly from. the rest of the brands "slow flow" nipples were still too fast for him.
mine takes the avent orthodontic pacifiers. the ones that look like traditional paci's but slightly squished nipples, and not the ones that have a flat part and a rounded part. those ones are meant to be more like real nipples or something but he didn't like them at all. he only takes his paci for comfort before he sleeps. once he's fast asleep, he spits it out of his mouth.
Hubby couldn't find the tommee tippee bottle at our pinds target and walmart.. Our babies r us is an journey away so he ended up bringing born free home last nite. He was ok with the bottle but he was kind of gulping it down..I wonder if milk flow is too fast for level 1 nipple! It says 0+ months on ten bottle.
He burped but also made noises n faces like he was going to vomit... What could be the reason?
How did you girls warm up the breast milk?I ran it under warm water bit it took pretty long!
Once we figured out what we were doing, we would boil water or heat it in the microwave, and then put it in a bowl and set the bottle (with milk) in the bowl of hot water.
Because madam came as a surprise we did use the Gerber bottle in the very very beginning, cuz we were so lost and had to make quick decisions. They're even available at grocery stores. You can try those, but I do think she was gassier with those. But they are more suitable for newborns than the Born Frees I think.
To reheat bm we put it in a bottle and then put the bottle in a bowl of hot water. It takes a while....we usually put it in there about 20 minutes before we needed to feed him. If the milk was right out of the freezer we let it defrost in the fridge and then put it in the hot water

it probably means he drank too fast so yes, the nipple is too fast for him despite being "slow flow".
you can get the playtex ventaires at walmart, along with gerber, nuk and avent.
I think you can find preemie nipples for some brands.I have seen them but not sure what brand they were as I never used them.Check if you can find them. The flow will be slower than the ones you already have.
I guess we will try playtex vantaire as well n see how it goes...
preemie nipple is a good idea but that will have to work with purr bottles..need to check it out!
I just gave him bottle again n man he was just gulping it done..I got scaredn swit he'd to breast-feeding.. I felt like he could choke on it!
