book club 2

well i kinda wanted to start it before but it somehow didnt work out…
any1 up for it?. AGAIN?? lol

me :)

(again)

saw the autobiography of abdus sattar edhi in a book shop nearby...wanna read it inshalah...if i find time...

p.s. i'm in

yaar please count me in as well. i think i am partly to blame for it not working out last time.... feeling awful Will Insha'Allah not let that occur this time.

what kinda books?

Judging by the genders of those who responded thus far, i think it will be "chick lit" :p

Just kidding... we'll have something that will Insha'Allah appeal to the majority. But we usually arrive at the decision through a consensus... people post up suggested titles and the majority decision is usually accepted.

hm. no broody.. denounce this denounce that man is small we await uberman stuff .

consensus always ends up marginalising the radical :)

**

It does. :flower1: i’m sorry about that. If you have suggestions for good books to read, by all means please do post them in this thread… you never know, even if they are not chosen, you might inspire other Guppies to pursue those books at their own leisure.

oho :)

you're too nice ms. nadia. now im feeling guilty at being a spoilsport and am willing to read pride and prejudice or whatever the hell kinda mushy stuff consensus comes up with :).

mean, mean people :-\

lol. Yeah, Pride and Prejudice is always a favourite with females... i wonder if it has anything to do with a certain Mr. Darcy.

Please do feel free to come up with your own list if you want; none of the books on your list may be chosen, but at least it will add to the general list of suggested good books to read at our own leisure... which is always useful for ahem geeky bookworms like me :o

:-. my sister forced me into reading it inspite of me having an inkling into what kinda book it was. she kept telling me the end would be tragic and i actually fell for it and read it till the last page looking for the killer finish :-.

is it supposed to be a list of books you know are good (and thus would've read) or a list of books you've heard are good (and might have morons for book-recommenders)? fiction? philosophy?

**

Good questions. i would have to wait for Deviliciousss to answer your first query, because she opened this thread. In the past, we have tended (though there are NO hard and fast rules) to go with books we’ve read, but like i said - Deviliciousss should answer this question because this is her thread. And genre - i guess any genre goes as long as the book is interesting. i hope that helps :flower1:

Count me in.

Anyone read Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri?

What happens in a book club? Thanks. smile

all the members of the club decide on what book to read and they all read it and talk about it, the themes, and all that good stuff. ( im assuming discussion will be after every chapter or so...
i dont kno, whatever the rest og the ang decides..

Munni, That's what I'd like to know...

See, it's really easy for me to pick a book...I only read the classics...If someone tells me to read such and such author or such and such book, that's a time I could have used to read up on Emerson or Hemingway or even Shakespeare...Why? As someone once said, so many books, so little time...

If I do take a liking to a particular author, I have to read all his books then...I remember in Matric when Harold Robbins and Sydney Sheldon were hot, I loved their books...In fact I read every book they ever came out with...If I read Peter Benchley and I liked him, I had to read all his books, as a result I had a small library made up...

But later my preferences changed...I was no more a child looking for fast getaways in glitzy cars and tempting damsels...I started reading the classics...And it was truly then that I found out why the classics are called classics for a reason...

The author of classics put their heart and soul into their works...They pour out their feelings and their emotions and their life's experiences into their creations, as a result you get a book which not only takes you into the mind of the author, but makes you realize that there are others in this world who have gone through the same kind of pains that you yourself either went through or are experiencing...It's not like Stephen King (My one time fav author :D) who writes to entertain, but matters of the heart and mind...Something which makes you realize and say, I am not alone, there is/was someone who went through the same pains as myself...

These classic authors like Pat Conroy, Aldous Huxley, J.D. Salinger, e.t.c. have put their life's essence on white pages for all to see...

So count me in, everytime there is a classical which you discuss...Would love to know about it and discuss it...

Actually now I know what happens in a book club...Everyone reads a book and all get together to talk about it...:D

thou speak the truth lajawab.

im one for the (relatively) ancients too. tho my reading days are in a distant past and i guess im open to other stuff.

gun to my head my top ten fiction would be

Crime and Punishment - Dostovsky
Under Western Eyes - Conrad
1984 - Orwell
Brave New World - Huxley
Dombey and Son - Dickens (tho its too long to read in a group)
The Brothers Karamazov - Dostovsky
Ivanhoe - Sir Walter Scott
Les Miserables - Hugo
The Mayor of Casterbridge - the guy who wrote far from the madding crowd
far from the madding crowd - above
Anything from the three musketeers series :)
Hard Times - Dickens
All quiet on the Western Front - author forgotten
anything Wodehouse!
the picture of dorian gray - oscar wilde
the man who was thursday - father brown wala author

hm. apologies for inaccuracies... i've been more or less bookfree for ages now. would happily re-read any of these, but would be inclined to sample something else too.

There's also Davinci Code, which is really popular these days and causing controversy left and right. I've read it and would love to talk about it.

welll... shall we pick a book
