**It’s a weekday night but the City of Lights, Karachi, is bustling with activity; the roads leading to the new multiplex cinema hall are jammed with traffic and there is a pulsating energy in the air. The multiplex is full of people queuing up to buy tickets for the latest blockbuster, released in Pakistan on the same day as its worldwide premier. For an audience that was used to watching movies weeks, sometimes months after release, this is an amazing bonus and the halls fill up rapidly. Every show is sold out.

Only a decade ago this kind of crowd at a cinema hall would have been beyond imagination. The few old theatres that were left over after the glory days of Pakistani cinema of the 60s and 70s were shabby, ill kept and going heavily in loss. Their main fare were Punjabi films or B grade English movies that catered to the lowest common denominator. Families, especially with women in tow, kept far away from such crowds and invested in VCR, LCD, DVD or whatever the latest technology offered to keep up with their Bollywood or Hollywood. The cinema experience was becoming a thing of the past.

But the resilient Pakistani spirit manifests itself in everything we do; the cinema was no exception. While some leading filmmakers including Syed Noor, Sajjad Gul, Javed Shiekh and Samina Peerzada kept up the battle to revive the film industry, drawing crowds with films like Choorian, Inteha and Deewane Tere Pyar Ke, cinema owners fought for the right to screen movies from abroad. Titanic did a fantastic run for several weeks as did the latest James Bond movies, War of the Worlds and King Kong.

However, it was Shoaib Mansoor’s internationally acclaimed debut, Khuda Kay Liye, in 2007 that marked the true revival of the cinema. Suddenly, watching a film in a theatre was a cool thing to do and everyone, from the posh elites to the middle-class wage- earner, was eager to sample the simple pleasure of watching a movie in a good cinema.

Women too, have benefited from this boost to the industry; with a better crowd hitting the cinemas, it’s a common sight to see women, in groups of two or more, walking in to watch a movie — no male escort needed, thank you very much.

With more and more movies available, there was a need for the multiplex theatre; the first one that opened in Karachi in the posh Defence area was a huge success; the second, located in the congested downtown area, succeeded in drawing even bigger crowds.

Films like Avatar could now be viewed in all their 3-D splendour; Bollywood blockbusters could be enjoyed on the day they were released — no more pirate prints.

While the sparkling new multiplexes were doing roaring business, the old cinemas too, got a new lease on life. Investing in a makeover, they are back in the game and providing the audience the taste of a true cinema experience: Huge screen, high quality sound and, best of all, fresh popcorn.

Be it Pirates of the Caribbean, X-men First Class, or Bol, the latest offering from Shoaib Mansoor, going to watch a film is now the thing to do in Pakistan — pass the popcorn please.

It was funny to see the Bol ad for the 31st August worldwide(?) release on ARY network after deleting the reference to 'a Geo Films release'.
