Unwilling to learn By Javed Husain | DAWN.COM

On the night of May 22, 2011, over a dozen armed men, wearing suicide jackets, infiltrated into the Mehran Base of the Pakistan Navy Aviation.

When challenged, they mowed the challengers down with automatic fire, then proceeded to destroy the chosen targets – Orion P 3 maritime surveillance and anti-submarine platforms, said to cost Pakistan USD 30 million each. Eight such aircraft were contracted, out of which three were received, one crashed during a routine flight along the Mekran coast and the remaining two are believed to have been destroyed by the Mehran Base raiders.

**The question is how did the attackers manage to get into a supposedly well guarded base where all the naval aviation’s air assets were parked, and why did it take 18 hours to regain control of the base. It is clear that the Navy doesn’t think that Pakistan is at war with an internal enemy who has been striking targets with impunity all over the country – and in doing so, they have time and again exposed the weaknesses in the security systems employed by the defence forces.

Take the attack on the GHQ for example – the terrorists had managed to break into the GHQ and hold the Military Intelligence Directorate as hostage. They could have blown up the directorate, but didn’t, in a grave miscalculation that they could swap their hostages with their colleagues in the army’s custody. Had the Navy learnt its lessons from the GHQ raid, they just might have put into place a more effective security system and spared the country more humiliation, barely three weeks after the humiliation it faced as a result of the Abbottabad raid.**

The repeated failure of the Pakistani security forces to pre-empt terrorist activity has demoralised not only the Pakistani soldiers, sailors, and airmen, but has also severely dented the reputation of the three services in the eyes of the people they are expected to defend. Worse still, the servicemen and the people have begun to see the terrorists as ten feet tall.

In the face of tactics, strategy submits. **The need of the hour is to get the basics right, that is to say, developing an imaginative system for the security of National Vulnerable Points (VPs) and Vulnerable Areas (VAs). The objective should be to prevent infiltration into VPs and VAs, and if the terrorists manage to infiltrate, they are intercepted/taken out in time.

Apart from this, the intelligence services need to increase their resources and effectiveness aimed at surprising the terrorists before they set out on a mission. This would obviously involve penetrating the various terror groups operating in the country. The failure or success in combating terrorism depends entirely on the intelligence services.**

If we don’t get the basics (tactics) right, however brilliant the high policy and strategy may be, they would count for nothing-and the country will continue to suffer humiliation time and again.

Re: Blast and Gunfire in PAF Base in Karachi

The FIR has been registered against 12 terrorists, 4 were killed that means about 8 of them escaped. After 17 hours of operation, a good result by our SSG commandos, hats off to them!

Discrepancies surround PNS Mehran case

Updated 5 hours ago

KARACHI: Severe contradictions have emerged following the audacious attack on PNS Mehran in Karachi, Geo News reported.

**The differences found in the statements of Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Naval Chief and the FIR lodged by the Navy have complicated the matter.

According to police, an FIR 447/11 has been registered under the explosives and terrorism act in Shahra-e-Faisal Police Station where Lt Irfan Asghar, who was at the night duty on the same night when the base was attacked, told that there were 10-12 terrorists who attacked the base.**

The militants entered the base by scaling the walls near check post number 2 whereas the press briefing by the Interior Minister has astonished the entire nation where he stated that there were six militants who attacked the base. Four out of six attackers were shot dead while the other two were able to escape the area.

On the other hand, Naval Chief Noman Bashir also confirmed the number of dead militants but could not confirm about the number of escaped militants.

According to police, proofs have been found that there were four terrorists involved in the attack and they were carrying suicide jackets and other explosives.

Re: Blast and Gunfire in PAF Base in Karachi

When listening to Rehman Malik, you have to adjust his version of any event to account for the fact that he is incompetent.

Re: Blast and Gunfire in PAF Base in Karachi

LOL Ya thats so funny and stupid that after this many hours of operation they couldnt get a hold of single alive terrorist??!! Were they commandos or Karachi police?

What was the purpose of all black out and Gherao/naka-bandi??

And 8 running away means they are going to attack somewhere else pretty soon.. argghhh

Re: Blast and Gunfire in PAF Base in Karachi

they have registered an FIR with the local police so rest assured the police will investigate the event and make necessary arrest  It’s a police case NOW! :cb:

Re: Blast and Gunfire in PAF Base in Karachi

Does that mean they rely more on ‘bloody civilian’ security?

So I am popular now
Using my words.
Great

Re: Blast and Gunfire in PAF Base in Karachi

Generally anyone making such comments instantly becomes an outcast and treated in the harshest possible words. It happens by those who just can't see that some questions have grown just too large to sweep under the carpet. But what can happen when the most relevant person says that "it's not a security lapse"? Remember, questions are not allowed.

Re: Blast and Gunfire in PAF Base in Karachi

ducks are cute

Re: Blast and Gunfire in PAF Base in Karachi

So does it mean there were actually 16 attackers?
FIR is registered against 12 and 4 are dead ,i guess you cant register a case against dead people.

^^ They aint when their brains is splatted all over the floor.

lol, the matter is so serious but this hilarious

Govt knows how many terrorists attacked naval base: PM

T**he prime minister says information cannot be shared with public at the moment.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Wednesday dispelled the impression that there was confusion in the number of terrorists who attacked PNS Mehran in Karachi.**

Talking to the media after inquiring after PML-F chief Peer Pagara’s health, **he said there was no contradiction on the number of terrorists. There are informaion which cannot be made public at the moment, he said.

He said that let the inquiry complete its course and the report would be brought to the public. He said all facts would be come to light after the inquiry into the incident had been completed.**
