That is not a paindu accent. That is just (pure) punjabi and this is what it sounds like.
Yes punjabi people have differences in accent/words depending of which area they are from, but this accent that you are talking about has nothing to do with being born in USA or a pind or with being highly educated or not.
Thank you.
Also, like a lot of people stated Bilqees is the only one speaking proper Punjabi, everyone else pretty much speaks Urdu. And when she's talking about important plot parts, it's rather easy Punjabi. When she's dissing her kids or her son in law then she starts hardcore, but anyways. I HATE Sadia Imam...wth?! I have NEVER met anyone speak with an accent like that. I've been to the most Punjabified of pinds, I've met fresh off the boat Faislabadis and Lahoris...their Urdu attempts are NOTHING like hers. It's so pathetic, she doesn't even attempt to sound Punjabi...she's the one who just arrived shouldn't she be SLIGHTLY more credible? She's old and needs to stop 'acting' if you can call it that, all she does is pretend to be a freakin 'bechari' all the time in every. single. drama. God. Every time she's on screen I want to stab my eyes out. Farhan Agha is now lol-worthy cos it's so funny how he tries.
She is Punjabi from Gujranwala, atleats that's what somebody recently told me. I believe she has lived in karachi all her life but i guess she must have had the punjabiness in her from her bachpan. Waise bhi, she's just too talented and plays all her roles with such a finesse.
Bushra and her punjabi is awesome and that is the only character that amuses me otherwise God knows what punjabi Farhan is speaking...especially portraying a sikh character...he starts off with punjabi and just continues in urdu which is soo annoying because it suddenly shows the major flaws in the drama....khair...i think after humsafar...durreshahwar is the only good drama!
i think farhan is doing a good job .. why is everybody scrutinzing over it checking the language in such detail ? .. its about the feeling the actor portrays and he is doing very well as a concerned and alone father .. i like all the characters and they are doing justice to their roles and i think this is going to be a really interesting adn dilchasp drama .. i love all the characters and i cant wait for syra
p.s- and when farhan was sitting on the couch wth the sad look on his face thinking out loud that the reason he did not get too strict with his daughter was becasue he did not want to die alone cause everyone was already angry with him for marrying the chrisitian and eeryone left him .. i was like aaaaw :( .. i felt his pain ic ould see it in his eyes .. hes doing an excellent job .. i v always liked farhan he is a good actor .. i hope the cast gets an award for this one
Yeah i agree that the accent is very heavy paindoo type, but regardless of what you study in school, eventually the accent of ppl around you rubs off. I know this guy who was born and raised in Miami and he attended an IV league univ BUT his family was always friends with pakistani community in miami, he always had pakistani (second generation immigrants) friends (who in turn only hung out with other similar desis) and when you hear him speak with friends he won't even be able to say Miami. Instead he'll say "MAY-YAAMEEE" and talk in a full time paindoo accent. it's kind of like a switch goes off inside him. but when he interacts with goras, he is fine. I guess if he hadn't attended a good university and wasn't employed by a great firm and instead lived in a joint family set up, drove a cab and hung out at dhabas, that language switch would have been turned to the paindoo-side permanently. plus i think it's implied that the older son didn't really attend school. maybe the parents got away with "home schooling" or smth? smth to that affect i guess
.
you make a good point - thanks Dooree! Since I don't live in a very desi populated area, I haven't come across any kids who have grown up here but act like they are from a small gaaon.
i agree farhan ali agha bad bad choice… babrik was such a good sikh in dastann, though i dont like him as an actor but atleast character suited him. dont know wht the director was thinking while casting, even i m not liking sadia imam, she should quit n get married
I really liked this drama from the start. It was mostly due to Bushara Ansari's acting and her speaking in pure Punjabi. Now that you don't see everyday! I thought the script might change and have Bushra speaking a mix of Punjabi and Urdu, but I was pleasantly surprised when she kept on speaking Punjabi throughout. There were some lines/words I hadn't heard in such a long time and brought a smile to my face. =)
I do think they should've incorporated subtitles for non-Punjabi speaking folks. Mehreen Jabbar includes Urdu subtitles in her dramas when there is a conversation going on in English, and I really like that about her dramas.
I am liking Sadia Imam's character. Seriously, I was tired of seeing her play some rich lady wearing a sari and caked up with makeup trying to steal someone's husband. A nice change to see her play a "normal" character. Although I am having a little trouble understanding her character. In front of her in-laws she is all masoom and basically a doormat; but once she starts talking to her family back home it seems like a different character emerges.
Ahsan...he is a great actor, but for some odd reason I really can not stand him in this drama. He doesn't fit in with the whole Punjabi family just like his Maamo, Farhan Ali Agha.
Oh, I almost forgot about Anjuman's boyfriend SMACK. I am a little confused, is he American or Indian? I thought he was going to her house with his parents to ask for her hand. If he is from India then why in the world was there so much misunderstanding between him and her parents. Mai Anjumun ka yaar hoon and all that jazz. He seems more Americanized then all of Bilqees's children, even though her children were all born in Amreeka!
Overall, it is going alright at the moment. I am hoping the drama picks up its pace.
