Re: Bilawal Zardari made PPP new chairman?
Bilawal to lead party as per Benazir’s will
Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPP-P) President Makhdoom Amin Fahim is likely to assume the party chairmanship today (Sunday) for a short period of time, after which Bilawal (Benazir’s son) would be nominated as permanent party chief as per will of her mother, Benazir Bhutto. According to party sources, Makhdoom Amin Fahim would lead the party till the election process is completed. Amin Fahim has been very close to PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto during the last eight years. He has learnt many political tactics from former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto during the period, the sources said.
The sources said Benazir Bhutto was very conscious about the future and education of her son, Bilawal. She wanted him to lead the party after her, the sources added. Now Bilawal is 19-year old, who is getting education at Oxford University, London. “Bilawal is immature for politics and his education is also not completed, “ the sources said. According to the Benazir’s will, the sources added, son Bilawal would lead the PPP after her. The sources added that nominations of PPP leadership would be announced in the meeting of party’s Central Executive Committee which is being held today at Larkana after the ‘Qul’ of late PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto. The “Soyem” of Benazir Bhutto will be held at 10:00 to 12:00am today at Naudero, Larkana.
The sources said that as many as 64 members of Central Executive Committee would participate in the meeting. A proposal was circulated in the PPP camp that Benazir Bhutto’s sister Sanam Bhutto or Asif Ali Zardari be elected as chairperson till Bilawal is mature enough to assume the important charge. The meeting would also discuss the issue whether or not to boycott the upcoming elections, the sources said. Meanwhile, all eyes are set on the CEC meeting in which party central leaders would finalise the name of new head of the party and chalk out future line of the action.
CEC consists of 50 members such as PPP secretary General Jehangir Badar, former senator Asif Ali Zardari, Punjab President Shah Mehmood Qureshi, PPP Sindh president Syed Qaim Ali Shah, PPP NWFP President Rahim Dad khan, Balochistan PPP President Lakshar Risani, PPP senior vice chairman Makhdoom Amin Faheem, central leader and former speaker Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani who is also vice chairman, PPP central information Secretary, Sherry Rehman, PPP Deputy Secretary General and opposition leader in the senate Mian Raza Rabbani, Aftab Shahuban Mirani, Yousaf Talpur , Syed Naveed Qamar ,Syed Kurasheed Shah, PPP Finance Secretary Babar Awan , PPP chairperson security advisor Rehman Malik, Farooq Niak, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto spokesman Farhatullah Baba, senator Safdar Abbasi, Naheed Khan political secretary of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, PPP Sindh information Secretary Dr Fehmida Mirza and other PPP central Executive Committee meeting members, who would attend the meeting.
Sources in party said that Asif Zardari, Sanam Bhutto, Amin Faheem, Yousaf Raza Gillani, Shah Mehmooad Qureshi and Bilawal names are favorite for the next party chairmanship to lead the party. Sources in PPP said that when she returned from the abroad along with her younger sister Sanam Bhutto, she started hectic efforts to join her younger niece Fatima Bhutto in the PPP despite she was too much critical of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto. After the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto, it’s necessary for the party that Bhutto name would be continued. When contacted PPP central information Secretary Sherry Rehman said in sobbing voice that PPP Central Committee meeting would decide about the party chairperson and it was premature to say anything about party’s participation in election or its boycott.
AFP adds: Benazir Bhutto’s husband said in an interview Saturday that she left instructions about the future of the Pakistan People’s Party to be read in the event of her death, which would be made public Sunday. Asif Zardari told BBC that the couple’s son would read out the message from the former prime minister and opposition leader, who was assassinated Thursday. Zardari also revealed that his wife had made detailed plans for her burial, including changing the location of the plot from his family’s ancestral tomb to her family’s mausoleum following another recent suicide bomb attack. “She has left a message for the party and she has left a will, so we shall be doing that tomorrow (Sunday) after the third day (of official mourning),” he said. “We have called for a meeting and her will will be read out there and the instructions she has left will be read out there.” Asked if he would succeed her as party leader, Zardari said: “It depends on the party and depends on the will.” Zardari also spoke of his personal sense of loss following the death of his wife, who he said meant ‘much more than life’ to him. “I have seen many tragedies in my life… but nothing has devastated me more than this has,” he said. “We were always aware of the dangers she faced but somehow we were hoping that we would succeed and they would not - the terrorists and the people who back these terrorists.”
