its sign to TELL the young hoodlums on the street that she is a married woman so no one will bother her. its nothing more than that. thats why unmarried girls [even Hindus] don’t sport a bindiya. now, its a symbol of a married woman like mangal sutra.

True that Mangal Sutar is for married Hindu women.
But unmarried Hindu girls do sport Bindya.
