Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

antiobl, unfortunately you did not get to read my original comment because it was taken off by the moderator…too bad for us Indians that on this forum you can call me a Bharati but I cannot call you the Pak equivalent.

Re: Bhartis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Antiobl, since I cannot respond in kind…thanks to the biased moderator… I will just say this …if you are bent upon using the word “Bharati” when you refer to Indians…use the correct Hindi word “Bharatiyay” unless you are distorting the word on purpose and deriving “happiness” from it…

And your comment about NRIs is…let us just say…stupid.

Re: Bhartis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Some1, there is nothing objectionable with Bharati, I supposed you were objecting to Bharti which Im guessing is a typo by antiobl. Theres 315,000 google hits for bharati, mostly indian websites, and none of them seem aimed to deride indians.

Here you go:

Re: Bhartis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Ravage,

Bharti OR Bharati is not an “offensive” word. I do not have to use Google to figure that out. I know enough of my native language to know that “Bhartis/Bharatis” is simply the wrong(incorrect) word to use for “Indians” and they cannot be used interchangeably. Also why (unless the intention was dubious) would somebody want to use the word “Bhartis” instead of “Indians” on an English Language forum. I have no doubt in my mind that our friend here was trying to mock at “Indians” even though the word “Bharti” is not a bad word in isolation.

Henceforth can I call Pakistanis as “Camels” since “Camels” is not an offensive word in the dictionary. Also, you can Google it and you will find 1345600000 sites in the results.

Here you go :
Camels ask: Why is Pakistan betraying the Palestinians ?

Re: Bhartis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Some1

Youre splitting hairs, I can vouch that Bharati is used to say indian in any number urdu language news bulletins. If your only beef is that this is an english language forum or you wish that there was another Urdu word for India, then tough luck, this is also a Pakistani forum where urdu is spoken.

And you may try substituting Camels or any other derogatory term for Pakistanis (bharati is NOT a derogatory phrase), but not only would I remove it, I would recommend a warning for you. The above post is the last time Im tolerating this inanity from you.

Re: Bhartis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

you obviously dont seem to have a handle on your URDU…if you can confirm (preferably point me to a well-regarded site) that says BHARTIS/BHARATIS is the URDU (or even HINDI) word for INDIANS..I will rest my case.

Ever heard of the URDU word HINDUSTANI.

Re: Bhartis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

bus, itni si baat thi?

Urdu parhni ati hai?

Heres one headline:

“Bharat kay hurriyat conference (ali geelani) group say rawabit hein, Bharati high Commissioner”

Re: Bhartis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Also, Mr Ravage, please use Gupshup search on "antiobl" posts. He seems to be just too fond of the word "Bhartis"...typo my foot.
One must be born yesterday to believe that antiobl's intentions were innocent.

Anyways, I am done....don't care about it anymore.

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Aray before you go, why dont you verify my grasp of the urdu language some1 sahab..

Re: Bhartis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Did I say well-regarded site ? From the web page itself it does not look like it.

Anyways, like I said just read some archived posts of antiobl about Bhartis and Bharatis…will tell you a bit about why he likes using the word so much…assuming you already don’t know about it.

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Its JANG news, the widest circulated urdu newspaper in Pakistan. Biggest media outlet in the country.

regardless of what anti's history is, Bharati is a fair word to use. Its very odd if he somehow manages to use it in a way that rankles you, but thats unfortunate.

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

:)

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

That’s my whole point..Bharti is not same as Bhartiya..guess the moderator is defending what he wants to defend or it is just too difficult for Pakistanis (note that I did not use the short version of the word) to spell INDIANS.

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

What does the Bharatiya in BJP mean? Indian?

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Hey bubba! Calm down. Bharatiya in the South is same as Bharati in the North. Learn something about your own country! Sticking to the Southie Lingo won’t help you in the North.

Anyway your moaning and groaning about the term Bharati is just a $tupid effort for taking this thread away from the main topic: Bharati reaction to Pak-Israel handshake. Don’t be a crybaby.

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Did anyone mention this - the name Bharat came from King Bharat and refers to the land he ruled which incidentally included Pakistan. So it’s fine for India to be referred to as Bharat, as long as you understand what it means and the historical, religious and cultural significance of which that applies to both countries:bukbuk:

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

No. The correct word is “Bharatiya”, both in North and South India. I know, since I have spent many years in both regions.

“India” is “Bharat”
“Indian” is “Bharatiya”

The word “Bharati” is a feminine name; it means, “goddess Saraswati” (Hindu “goddess of knowledge”).

Please consider using the correct word in the future.

Peace to you.

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

sorry, no matter what you think, I've given you proof from the widest read urdu newspaper in the world, that bharati is indeed the correct urdu phrasing, and thus it will stay a valid word to use to refer to indians. Some1 I cannot believe you are still arguing this, i thought you would rest your cast if I showed you proof from ANY reputed site?

Anti's point is correct, this thread is getting offcourse, so Im going to split this discussion.

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Ravage and antiobl, here’s my logic:

  • “Bharat” is the original name of India in Sanskrit and Hindi (and other languages in the same family).
  • In Sanskrit and Hindi, the word for “Indian” is pronounced as “Bharatiya”. That is, it ends in a “-y” sound.
  • So, when we transliterate the word in English, we write it with the “-ya” ending.

In Urdu, the word may indeed be “Bharati”, but since the original word is from Sanskrit / Hindi, I believe the “Right Thing To Do” is to trust Hindi-speaking people (i.e., Indians) when we point out some nuances of the spelling. And if you don’t trust me or Some1, there is a third-party link in my previous post which shows that “Bharati” (without the “y” sound) means something altogether different.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

I never knew that my Indian friends consider Bharat an offensive word. It's widely used. Maybe it doesn't give that 'romantic quality' to India. Is Hindustani a right term? I've heard Indian crowds chanting 'Hindustan jeeta ga, Pakistan hare ga' in cricket/hockey mathces. I always wondered why they used the word hindustani if they believe in a secular state. Besides, while we're at it, we need to analyze the etymology of word India/Indian as well.
