Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

Re: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?

Rohit, i understand your logic but it only applies for Hindi. In urdu unfortunately the same does not apply.

We just add an ‘i’ to something to describe the belonging to some race/entity/nation etc.

For example

Anyone hailing from Punjab is Punjabi not Punjabiya
People of Sindh are Sindhi, not Sindhiya
People of Pakistan are Pakistani not Pakistaniya

and so on and so forth, if you get the picture.

Therefore, when speaking in urdu.. (not hindi) anybody referring to someone from Bharat would refer to them as bharati.

Now if you want to force us to use a hindi word while conversing in urdu, then thats something else. Thats like the chinese asking us to not call them cheeni, and instead use the word that they use to describe themselves.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

Calling oneself Hindustani does not contradict his belief in a secular state. ‘Hindustan’ means is land east of the Indus/Sindhu river. The association of Hindu with practitioners of the stream of religion now known now as Hinduism only truly took root from around the 15th and 16th centuries. Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

Americans should not be happy with Pakistanis since in Urdu it is an "Umreecan".
English must be furious since they are angrez - not even close to English.
Bengolis should also be upset since they are "Bungaalee".
Chinese ... well lets not go there, I dont even know what they are called in their own language but they are "Cheeni" in Urdu.

Well, I think most of the world is unhappy with urdu-speaking. We should stop speaking Urdu and learn all languages of the world so that we can pronounce every word correctly with its original pronunciation.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

what's the problem here?

antiobl is an indian. no worries.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

very good post cheegum :k:

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is

you can split hairs over semantics, but the usual way of refering to indians in urdu is hindustanis. calling them bharatis is about as common or acceptable as calling pakistanis bakistanis. not like it is offensive, but when antibolbol does it, it is done as a slur. otherwise, who gives shyt.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

Queerio, we prefer using bharati over hindustani as it rolls off the tongue much easier. And contrary to what you might believe, there is no slur intended.

I have grown up listening to news in pakistan and i have heard 'Bharati faujain' more than
'Hindustani faujain'.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

queer, you're not very familiar with urdu then, because saying that Hindustani is the generally used urdu word for indian is facttually incorrect. as cheegum says, the customary way of saying India and Indian in urdu is Bharat and Bharati, something I've backed up with references from the largest circulated Urdu newspaper in the world. Likewise, you're welcome to open your tv sets and tune into urdu channels like geo,ary etc and see how indian is said on news bulletins.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is

chee man, i had no idea pakistanis refered to indians as bharatis. within india, urdu speakers refer to indians as hindustanis even today.

however, you have obviously missed antibulbul's posts about "baha-rat-is". there is no denying the slur in his posts when it comes to his bharati references.

its funny though that the "pa-ki-satanis" always gets deleted.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

Wow, never thought I would see the day when bhartis would teach us Urdu. Live and learn, I guess.

Queer and Some1, why are you so worried about this little bulletin board? Try spending your energies on some of the leading newspapers and media channels in the Sub continent like Jang or maybe Ptv, Geo, Ary etc. In fact, you may even need to contact some Indian news sources! I have been hearing this term all my life from not only Pakistanis but also Indian friends.

Didn't know it was so easy to get under the skins of Indians, just refer to their origins!

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is

oh shut it, ba-ki-satani. by origin you are as bharti as me. urdu isnt bakisatani baap ka maal, no matter how bunjabiized you speak it.

now lets do some :nuch: and get in touch with your bunjabbi roots.

There are many sites which confirm that word ‘Bharti’ is proudly used by ‘Bhartis’ themselves to mean ‘related to or pertaining to Bharat’.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is

I guess these people should change their names to

Abhishek Indian.....Jay P. Indian. etc. :)

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

Hmm deedawar i think in the examples you quoted Bharti is used as a proper noun i.e. name so that doesnt help things. As Some1 said they are fine with Bharti being used as someone name.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

OK...so why a school or college or a company has this name?. And the meaning there is?
A girly name as it was suggested? Males had this name as well.

Bharti is like Texan, New Yorker, Irani, Dehalvi, Karachvi etc.
I have not been able to understand why it was considered a problem to begin with. Its like arguing for arguing sake. Unless there is something very bad attached to it. But why people wanna be called bharti as proper noun if thats the case?

I am sure these people will not mind if we say "mr. bharti is a graduate of bharti school".

Mr. Bharti is member of "bharti fouj".

Why didn't these people choose Indian as last name? as I mentioned earlier.

I think the best word I can describe for Some1 and others behaviour is 'Hujjati' (meaning Argumentary)

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

"Bharti" seems OK to me.
I'm sure all you Paki's would agree too.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

deedawar: 'bharti' is a name and it does not necessarily mean 'belonging to bharat'.

malhot: bad news for you. paki isnt considered a derogatory term inside of pakistan, especially when coming from a fellow paki or indian. maybe you can try some other word. scroll up the thread you can choose from a variety of words to poke fun at us. hows porky sound?

indians who think we use the word bharati to make fun of you: bharati is an urdu word, like it or not. if you have to resort to making fun of pakistanis, just because you think bharati a derogatory term, then please go ahead and think what you may like.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

If its so bad then why even a noun?

Still not clear why Bharti is bad even if it is used 'as related to' or 'belong to'?
Again,

Bharat...............Bharati or Bharti
Pakistan...........Pakistani
Iran..................Irani..................makes perfect sense.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

^ yes, makes sense in urdu. Probably not in hindi.

Re: Bharati isnt the correct Urdu term for Indians [SPLIT FROM: Bharatis ask: Why is Israel betraying India?]

Finally the cat is out of bag....

Its the hatred towards Urdu which caused all the hype....very interesting indeed! or should I say.....pathetic.....

So, its perfectly alright for Urdu speaking to say Bharti or Bharati meaning related to Bharat.
