Re: Bhang and Bhangi
What is bhaang anyway? The drink? How is it made? I thought it was some sort of lassi but clearly isn't if you can get high off of it?
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
bhaang is a narcotic and is traditionally grounded into powder form which is then mized in edibles like Lassi and Laddoo...in India, it's more consumed during Diwali/Dussehraa festivals which are falling on October 13 and 26 respectively this year...as a kid, we were warned by elders NOT to take laDDoo from any Hindu friend/neighbour etc for fear of being laced with bhaang. :)

Bhang is a green leaf which is found in abundance on Islamabad's footpaths too. The leaves of Bhang are mixed with some ingredients and grounded to form a drink, which makes drinker dizzy. In Multan area, faqeers on mazaraat like Bahaudin Zakaria, etc use it and in Saraiki they probably call it Saawi (due to green color of the drink). In some parts of India, flavoured Bhang is sold and as I referred above on festival related god shiva, where consumption of Bhang is somewhat mandatory.
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
I heard about bhaang laddoos during Diwali/Navratri for the first time here. I have not noticed such a phenomenon in the South. Either I led a very sheltered life or it is a region specific practice. ![]()
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
Shiv Bhakt are into Nashakhori, Bhaang is just one of them, the other is chilam that is found in areas like kashi and varanasi:)

Re: Bhang and Bhangi
But I read that Bhangi was a caste in Punjab. Probably, MahaRaja Ranjeet Singh had some connection with that. Generally, Bhangi is the Punjabi for the urdu word Mahatar (one who cleans bathrooms). If Bhangi was Bhang peene wala then what other word for this profession got in Punjabi?
The punjabi word for cleaners is chooRa. ( choti toee Wala R)
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
Dunno why bhang and other stuff like this are used by Lord Shiva’s devotees. Don’t they have enough devotion in their hearts that they need extra help to achieve spiritual ecstasy ? I condemn this practice. ![]()
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
I think he is confused between Holi and Diwali. Bhang laddoos/lassi are partaken in North India especially UP on Holi. Nobody touches them on Diwali/Dussera.
When I was a studying in JNU, Delhi, Bhang Lassi was served as breakfast in our hostel messes on Holi. We would fill it in bottles and drink it whilst dancing in the campus maidan. ![]()

Yes choora too,
But no one heard qooli??
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
Never heard word qooli for bhangi or jamadaar. Off course Quli is the one who helps with your luggage at train station.
By the way there is a post in police or army by jamadaar I think.
