Never thought it got any connection.
One of my colleague ( London - Palat) revealed this new theory that in old times, one who used to drink Bhang was called Bhangi. ![]()
Do you agree with this theory, whcih was made me
when I first heard that.

Re: Bhang and Bhangi
Oh you did not know that connection? I thought it was pretty obvious.

I thought bhangi was something else ![]()
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
I did a double-take when I read the title. I always thought that a bhangi was a neechi zaat (which I know sounds really bad to say, so my apologies) person who did menial jobs related to cleaning. Sort of an untouchable.

But I read that Bhangi was a caste in Punjab. Probably, MahaRaja Ranjeet Singh had some connection with that. Generally, Bhangi is the Punjabi for the urdu word Mahatar (one who cleans bathrooms). If Bhangi was Bhang peene wala then what other word for this profession got in Punjabi?
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
Hmm, I did not know that. Then why do we call them Jamaadaar?

Welcome back Sehrysh.
Thats what my argument was with the guy, when he first told this theory. Everyone who heard this theory (Bhangi and Bhnag) took it as a joke

Jharoo dene wala.
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
May be becuase wo logon ka phelaya huwa jama karta hai. I once read in a railway station toilet ‘Barae mehrbani apne kiye karae pe pani pher ke jaiye’ ![]()

Thats called Khakrob in KKF's Urdu
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
bhungees are the caste who made bhaang. like chamaars are teh caste who made leather. and as you know, desis think anything service related, makes you lowly. so these are now galiyaan.

in KKF's Urdu, they are called Izzat Ma'aab khaakroob Sahab

By Bhaang you mean Bhang as is the theory of my colleague or its something else?

Aahahahhahaahhaahha

So then where did the connection from bhaang-maker to menial labourer come from? I've seen the use of chamaar both as a gaali and as a reference to I thought shoe repairer.
And I agree, when you reflect on it, it's actually shameful for us to treat any worker/paisha as being menial or being a derogatory term - after all they too work hard to support themselves.

Re: Bhang and Bhangi
bhangi means sweeper/sweeperess who clean your toilet [especially in old days when we used to have open toilets, qadamche jo hote the gaaoN meN]
ek moHaavarah bhii hai k...kisi ko bhangii banaa denaa...matlab usko deevaaliya banaa denaa yaa uskii izzat utaar lenaa is Had tak k vo izzat o aabroo emN bhangi ke baraabar aa jaaye....[bhangi is the lowest of the low in caste system]

A few days ago Southie uncle raised similar point in another thread. But the profession is quite infamous and oldest one in the world

I think they are called Qooli?? ( not quli the loader)
Re: Bhang and Bhangi
My apologies for this explanation in advance.
I think that because making of bhang and dealing with leather was associated with lower caste (and non Muslims) and in Pakistan, the job of cleaning gutters and toilets is reserved for non-Muslims, we started assciateing words like Bhangis and Chamars to people who clean our filth.
