In the UK everyone knows that Oxbridge aside, the Colleges of the University of London are the best, then (going by the rankings), Warwick, Manchester and Bristol.
I just wanted to know if the US has a rankings system and if so apart from Harvard, Yale and Princeton-what are the really good unis there.
We know of those 3 cos they are big names, and get talked about alot.
There are th US News Rankings and then there are the rankings for Business schools by Business week, Financial Times, Economist and the Wall Street Journal amongst others. You can check them all for rankings.
In terms of top tier schools, at least in science and engineering there are also:
Stanford, U of Penn, MIT, CalTech, Princeton, U of California, Berkeley, Santa Barbara and a few more.
Other big name schools:
Columbia, Northwestern, Michigan - Ann Arbor, Illinois - Urbana, etc
PS: Yale is not that big any longer except in liberal arts and business.
Yale is ivy league and MIT or Stanford are not yet they are generally more reputable then Yale. Yes Yale does have some clout but that is mostly in liberal arts I think and then the Business school. Of course that does not mean it still does not have a great name. It does but not quite like it used to and if I had to comapre between Yale and Columbia, I would choose Columbia any day.
if we are talking business, lets not forget the #1 school in business this year is at Northwestern (Kellogg) and #2 is U of Chicago (i.e. not just for economics theory)
anyways mo best it really depends on what you want to do. the rankings vary based on what major you are following. There are overall rankings too.
So I am to take it that there are a herd of top schools over there. Thats cool.
Perhpas one day I'll be able to rate them for myself-that would be something. The UK has a better Bachelor degree education-well thats what were told. :P

An Alum eh? Gotcha!..Didn't mean to exclude..Kellogg slipped my mind as I was focusing too much on the coasts. I really take issue with UC being #2 in business..it's stronghold is on theory. I take rankings with a grain of salt so any of the schools you and I have mentioned are all top tier, just depends on what school is considered "hot" for that particular year.
RF: Righto!! Moreover, as the rankings change year to year, anywhere in the top 10-15 is a good accomplishment and has the elite factor. Some more than others, eh guys!!!
RF: you went to CU for Bschool sright? Did you have Freeman for finance?

So you lot truly believe US bachelor level education is of a better standard then the UK?
We we're told by my US Studies Professor (himself Cambridge and LSE educated, who taught in the US for years) that bachelor level education in the States routinely has MULTIPLE CHOICE questions on the exam paper?
Is that true?
Thats amazing!
I can only go by what I'm told, and thats why I'm trying to get a fairer picture of the quality across the Atlantic-but if true that would be quite unbelievable.
Also why isnt US High school education deemed sufficient to enter a top University in the UK-they all ask that the applicant have at least 1 yr of Uni behind them.
