Why not use the wall charger?

Tried that and USB unit , didn’t work

This is what I got from the nexus 7 manual:

Your Nexus 7 can be charged via the USB port on a computer
only when Nexus 7 is in sleep mode (screen off) or turned off.
Charging through the USB port will take longer than charging
with the USB charging unit.

I fixed both problems. I did turn it off before charging but it wasn’t working at all. Later on, i used the USB cable that I use for charging my phone. And guess what, it worked. My nexus started charging and it is successfully connected with my laptop right now. The problem was the USB cable. Should I ask them to send me a new USB cable because I can’t be bothered to post them this cable that costs £2. Also, if I am using my phone USB cable, will it harm the device or cause any other problems?
