Re: Best Pakistani T.V. Channels
thanks everyone. it seems like PTV is not the same as it used to be in 1980s or early 1990s.
GEO, ARY, HUM and Aaj came later.
each to their own, maybe. there is dearth for good programming - that speaks to the ethos of contemporary Muslim and Pakistani society and especially the less well to do and communities abroad.
in media viewer ship trends, things change only when demands change. if today all channels were pressed to come up with decent and truly informative programming, they will have no choice but to be able to provide with such good programming.
blind following of indian channels in drama themes, presenting strange and bizarre copying of popular and tasteless shows that are created in the western countries and again indian shows, is just counter intuitive to do well for Pakistani channels. reality shows, immoral themes of dramas and shows like american or indian idol, is not at all what decent Pakistanis will relate to.
a very weak argument made is always this: it is only for entertainment purposes or worse, 'who cares?’ double standards there, no?
it in fact sends a message to youth in your households, that being 'hot or cool' in a portrayed self debasing manners, is right.
but, everyone knows and sees that this involves doing wrong things, because they are different and if a group of loud obscenely dancing boys and girls is screened on your home tvs, you are encouraging youth to basically think that it is a normal thing to dance like that.
why cant their be a nice talk show for youth on Pakistani tv channels, where they share their ideas related to their intellectual calibre for a plethora of social, educational, history and political insight, talent in arts fields, media related issues, studies abroad, social work, international travel, sports and responsible citizenship awareness so on and so forth?
it all boils down to them being the next generation of professionals and leaders, doctors and teachers, researchers and lawyers, economists, IT professionals and engineers. but is the programming, doing half as much of a good job that it should be doing?
what are we doing to bring the change?
music and dance, yes is good. every one enjoys it. but why there has to be cheapness in it? obviously, in programming created in a Muslim country, by Muslims is apparently for them as well. but is it?
ever wonder why film industry and indian tv channels’ award ceremonies happen in cities and countries like Abu Dhabi and Indonesia?
this over-laid message of universality in bringing people together through entertainment industry of india, is not the right thing, it is not the only way to achieve that, is it?.
literature and media of all kind, produced and circulated or screened in a country or society has a lot to do with the learnt violence, sexism and propagating the wrong concepts in the minds of the viewers, especially young ones.
i doubt it that parents of age 60 or grand parents need to see the profound obscenity in the films being made today. 30 - 40 yrs old, are ideally mature and hopefully watch reasonable programs, even if it has to have its content serve as modeled interpersonal relationships and their developments.
then you don’t even have to guess who is it being marketed to? yes, youth so that they can get worse and worse.
very few movies, created all over the world are moral full, today.
why not, Muslim-Pakistani young media professionals give a new turn to the monotonous trend and create programming which will actually be beneficial in its educative ness and also entertainment which is tasteful.
whatever goes in media, is not right. of course, it cannot become dangerous if youth and families in Pakistani-Muslim households curb it by not supporting it through watching it. but what if, youth as it has, becomes so hooked on this out of rebellion or confusion? next thing you know, all kids would like to be experimenting with the kind of dramatic situations that the popular media programs present. and they are doing it now a days, already.
that all said, if you were to target a viewers' group, who would it be, through unique programming shown at Pakistani channels?
best,
Dushwari
