We are going to put your taste and knowledge of urdu poetry to a grand test. This thread will hold a competition of Best Of The Best ghazal. All of you are invited to participate in this competition. One ghazal will be adjudged as the Best Of The Best.

**Rules that will rule:
**

  • You can post only one ghazal. (No nazm)
  • In case of duplication, first posted ghazal will remain while the second will have to go. You will then be allowed to replace your ghazal with a new one.
  • Extra marks for Poet’s name and Presentation.
  • A panel of three judges will decide about the best piece.
  • Point scale will be made of: **1:**Quality 2: Presentation 3: Poet’s name.

Submissions start: 1800GMT 23rd of July
Closing Time: 1800GMT 24th of July
Results: 1800GMT 26th of July

This thread will be unlocked by the above-mentioned deadline so that you could start posting and will be locked by the second deadline to announce the end of sumbission time.

Points Scale & Judges Panel

I am begining to realize that the points scale should have been made public when the compeition was announced so that participants could have prepared accordingly. Anyway, since it's the first time, I absolve myself completely :snooty:

Judges Panel: Anwaar Qureshi, Innocent _Smile, NikamiJano

Points Scale:

  • Six points for the quality/standard of ghazal

  • Three points for presentation

  • One point for poet’s name*

*Given the fact that most the members do not know the source. It is actually aimed at making them realize that source is also important.

Mustafa Zaidi

Mustafa was born on October 10, 1930 in Allahbad, India.
Mustafa was a brilliant student of his time. He graduated from Allahaabad University with distinction. His family migrated to Pakistan in 1951, where he came to be known as “Mustafa Zaidi” instead of “Tegh Allahabadi”. In 1954, he appreard in CSS exams and employed with the Pakistan Civil Services.

Maulana Hasrat Mohani
Introduction:
Maulana Hasrat Mohani was a romantic poet of Urdu language, journalist,
politician, parliamentarian and a fearless freedom fighter of Indo-Pak
Sub-continent . His real name was Syed Fazl ul Hasan. He was born in
1875 at Mohan in Unnao district of U.P. India.
Books:
A few of his books are Kulliyat-e-Hasrat Mohaniani,Sharh-e-Kalam-e-Ghalib,
Nukaat-e-Sukhan,Mushahidaat-e-Zindaan,etc.A very popular ghazal sung by
Ghulam Ali Chupke Chupke raat din... was penned by Hasrat Mohani.
Note:
It is very difficult to find the best of the best ghazal because in the world
of urdu poetry we got big treasure of urdu ghazals by many great poets.I am just sharing this ghazal because we dont read old poets usually and there good pieces of poetry are stabbed in dust.I like this ghazal for its simplicity and in this ghazal poet is blaming his lover for his/her rudeness!

"A Brief Introduction"

Amjad Islam Amjad **was born in Sialkot on 4th August 1944. He received his education in Lahore and started his career as a lecturer in M.A.O. College, Lahore. From 1975-79 he worked as the director of PTV. A prolific author of Ghazals, nazms and short-stories, he is the author of more than 40 books. He also wrote the famous "Waaris" drama series for PTV. He is one of the most popular poets in contemporary Urdu poetry scene.

"Kahan Aa Kay Ruknay Thay Rastay"

kahan aa kay ruknay thay rastay! kahan mor tha! usay bhool ja
Wo jo mil gaya usay yaad rakh, jo nahi mila usay bhool ja

Wo teray naseeb ki barishain kisi or chat pay baras gayeen
Dil-e-bay khabar meri bat sun, usay bhool ja, usay bhool ja

Main to gum tha teray hi dhiyaan main, teri aas, teray gumman main
Saba keh gai meray kaan main, meray sath aa, usay bhool ja

Kaheen chak jaan ka rafoo nahi, kisi aasteen pay lahoo nahi
Keh shaheed rah malal ka nahi khoon baha, usay bhool ja

Kisi aankh main nahi ashk-e-ghum, teray baad kuch bhi nahi hai kum
Tujhay zindgi nay bhula diya, to bhi muskura, usay bhool ja

Kuen aata hoa hai ghubaar main, ghum-e-zindgi k fishaar main
Wo jo darj tha teray bakht main, so wo ho gaya, usay bhool ja

Na wo aankh teri aankh thi, na wo khwaab hi tera khwaab tha

Yay jo raat din ka khail sa, isay daikh, is per yaqeen na ker

Jo bisat-e-jaan hi ulat gaya, wo jo raastay say palat gaya
Usay rooknay say kia hasool, usay mat bula, usay bhool ja

To yay kis liyay shab-e-hijr k her sitaray main usay daikhna
Wo falak keh jis pay milay thay hum, koi or tha, usay bhool ja

Tujhay chaand ban k mila tha jo, teray sahiloon pay khila tha jo
Wo tha aik dariya wasal ka so utar gaya, usay bhool ja

Amjad Islam Amjad
born on August 4 1944 in Sialkot is a famous urdu poet, writer and lyricist. He is considered as the pride of Pakistan.
Famous Books:
Apne log, Waqt, Mohabbat aisa daya hai, Us paar, Resham resham, Bandgi, zara phir se kehna, Itne khawab kahan rakhoon ga and Baarish ki awaaz to mention few.
Background:
the following ghazal has been chosen by me as one his best work to date. He is expressing his truest feelings in this ghazal, the whole ghazal revolves around changes, changes made by one person and how he feels due to one person’s absence. He conveys the message that how fast the world changes, how one person can bring so many changes into one’s life and this world as a whole.

woh shakhs ek shaam mein kitna badal gayaa

to kya hu’aa jo humse zamana badal gayaa

qadmon talay jo rait bichee thi wo chal parhi
us ne churayaa haath to sehraa badal gayaa

koi bhi cheez apni jagah par nahin rahi
jaate hi ek shakhs ke, kyaa kyaa badal gayaa

ek sar-khushi ki mauj ne kaisa kiyaa kamaal
woh be-niyaaz, saare ka saraa badal gayaa

uth kar chala gaya koi waqfe ke darmiyaan

hairat se saaray lafz use dekhte rahe
baaton mein apni baat ko kaisa badal gayaa

kahne ko ek sehan mein deewaar hee bani

qaayam kisi bhi haal pe dunya nahin rahi
taa’beer kho gayi, kabhi sapna badal gayaa

manzar ka rang asal mein sayaa tha rang ka
jis ne usay jidhar se bhi dekhaa badal gayaa

andar ke mausamon ki khabar us ki ho gayi
us nau-bahaar-e-naaz ka chehra badal gayaa

aankhon mein jitne ashq thay jugnoo se ban gaye
woh muskurayaa aur meri duniya badal gayaa

apni gali mein apna hi ghar dhundhtay hain log “Amjad”
ye kaun shehar ka naqsha badal gayaa

That is a very beautiful piece of poetry and a lovely one. One of my favourites as well...

But keep in mind that the contest is about Ghazal and what you have posted is nazm....

Please, post a ghazal to be part of this contest....

**I dont know about points but i guess it depends on what u you have edited.
As far as my editing is concerned, i had posted a nazm instead of ghazal, for which i have provided a reason. The judges have seen that i did’nt change my format, my format remains the same, i just switched my nazm with ghazal. Also see my time of editing, i edited as fast as i could. :slight_smile: **

I asked deep ocean personally for presentation because he/she was not really aware of what presentation meant.. he/she thought coloring was presentation…

As for Prince Ali, he had posted a nazm by mistake so that was just a reminder…

**NO POINTS DEDUCTED **because of the reasons mentioned…

I think - that’s fair and balanced IMO.

Cheating on editing will cause deductions in points, however on jusdge’s discretion.

Mujhe ko bata day k kia brief introduction to poet.. iss ke koi points hain kia? ya yeh presentation ka hissa hai?

Koi mujhe ye bhi guide kerde k posts ko centered kese kertay hain aur yeh bhi k kolors kese apply hotay hain.. :confused:
