Best Digital Camera

i think go to pc world website or shop u can buy a better camera frm there around £180 or so.This camera is too expensive.

I know Ahmadjee requested a camera for less than $300, however, I hope he won’t mind if I go a bit high-end. The following two cameras are both ~$460 on Yahoo! Shopping. Let me know if any of you have used either of them and which one seems better. To me both seem good, with some critical pros and cons. And compared to Sony’s unrela prices for comparable features, Olympus always has better pricing structure (price-performance).

For me, the biggest problem is lack of USB support, meaning I need to spend extra for a Card Reader. Also, I am not sure how the relationship between viewfinder and LCD works here (with SLR, you can only use one of them at a given time). Otherwise this camera seems to have everything. A lot of manual controls and ability to take extra lens. Comes with rechargable batteries and the charger. Takes CF cards which are the cheapest available.

The other problem seems to be that this camera is now almost 3 years old, from when it was introduced.

With several $299 cameras, I have noticed that many times when we are shooting indoors at night, the colors are messed up. When you are capturing a truly memorable moment, it can be quite disappointing to subsequently find out that the picture is messed up by the camera. Therefore I feel it is worth the extra 100-150 bucks if I can be assured of consistently high quality.

However, if budget is really paramount, also check out Minolta. A friend of mine just bought Minolta DiMAGE X and is really very happy about it. Its very thin, very pocketable with great results.

Amazingly, for a camera of this size, and no portruding lens, it still has 3x optical zoom. The MSRP and street price is $399, but you can get it over the internet (Yahoo! Shopping) for $283 upward (though for a 5-star vendor, you’d need to dish out $302 up)

I have seen that the Accessories sometimes make the cost go $50-100 up!

p.s: Thank you Faisal Bhai, You back or no?

Forget about the camera. Look at that HOT CHICK

Accessories can add up pretty quickly. There are some which are must (like storage media, carrying bag) and some which are shauq ki baat like additional lens, extra batteries etc.

Usually the internal default memories of cameras are pretty limited, so inevitably you need to put in some kind of bigger storage media, and thus must provide for that in your budget. Some camera manufacturers throw in a decent card FREE, along with the camera. In storage media, Compact Flash is the cheapest and then it gets more expensive for Multi-media card, Secure Digital Card and Memory Stick (Sony). Sony's CD-RW technology is the most easy-to-use, but such cameras are the more expensive ones in their category.

Newer cameras usually have rechargable batteries (Kodak has docking stations, Olympus provides battery-charger in the camera kit etc). If they are not, then get rechargable batteries and charger, otherwise AA and AAA run out very quickly in digi-cameras and you will have a silent bill of your local grocery store accumulating very high in a very short time.

ps. Yes.

ahmadjee, you can buy the Canon Powershot A40 with the following accessories included for only $351.00 plus shipping at this eBay offer.

  • Extra 64 MB CF Card (Along with the original 8MB).
  • 4 nimH 1800 batteries with charger
  • Leather Carrying Case
  • USB Compact Flash Card Reader

To me, that’s the best offer out there… the only thing missing is a lens attachment and a tripod. Tripod being of more important and goes for around 10-15 bucks.

As for the Dimage X, according to what I’ve learned this camera does not have good results. Although, I must agree with Faisal that it’s a hitech piece with the internet lense and the steel encased body of very small size (which btw, some ppl have found too small to handle.).

As for the other two Olympuses, they are about two year old or more… and bulky. Go with the A40 bro…

You can only paint with the colors you’re given…
…so get what you like and like what you have.

Give me a rough ratio. How many 'normal' photographs can you store in a 8 MB internal storage?

Also, if you take a picture ... say of 1200 x 600 ... but your printer can only handle 600 x 600 at the most; then wouldn't it defeat the whole purpose when printed? Yeah I know it will work with the monitor.

If u get a 2.1 Mega Pixel camera, then at the highest resolution, the picture will be approx 550K. A low resolution pic is generally in the vicinity of 50-150K. Do ur math.

With 8MB internal memory, at high resolution it will be 8-10 pics, at low, it will be 24-35 pics. In my 2.1MP camera I had put a 64MB Multimedia card (cost, incl S&H of $54), and at high resolution it stored 98 pics. At low resolution it was 390 pics. More than enough.

At high resolution the color details are much better. You can always use a good image software to reduce the size without effecting the sharpness and color. Increasing the size is not so successful as the pixels will inevitable blow up. So its always useful to capture the pic at high resolution and then reduce the size, rather than to do otherwise and capture it in low resolution.

The other difference is that you can print a digital picture via many online services (Kodak, Fuji or webshots.com all provide this feature). The print size is dependant on the pixel resolution of the digital picture. For high resolution u can get it printed upto 8"x11" (for wall hanging or desk frame) or any smaller size. But if your digital picture is already on low resolution, then u may be stuck with a maximum of 4"x6".

Hey!
I am going to the Future Shop tommorrow to buy a Digital Video Camera.

Talking about recharge stuff. I have been looking for a recharger that will not only recharge the batteries that I use for my normal SLR camera & the Camcorder but my future digital camera as well!

Any ideas?

It will be really great if I can recharge the batteries I use for my organizer.

Goodluck... I'll contact engineers at SONY tomorrow, may be they can come up with a new standard!

**pakistan99:**Ever since i got into this thread..i have been closely following this camera’s details on various sites. In fact i have won one of the auctions for the same package deal as you mentioned up there for $348. Bad deal. Why? Coz, to my mind (and of course my circumstances differ from anybody else’s)..the accessories that are clubbed with the main camera cost not more than US$100 when picked up separately. Shipping is $30.

Therez a real good deal at egghead.com. You can get this camera plus 128 MB of flash memory for US$340. Free shipping. The leather case, the charger and cells can be bought for much less i believe as is otherwise being claimed in the ebay deal.

You can also look for some refurbished good cameras Sony’s mavica etc. at overstock.com.

Good luck…and i am stuck with an auction win, that was better to lose than win!

Khanuu Mubarak ho bhai!!

When are you posting pictures with your new Camera?!!

Same for you, ahmadjee.... when are you posting pics from your new digital camera? :)

I got mine from the DHL dude this evening. Charging it up and will be ready to take some pictures to share with y'all tomorrow! :~)

So ahmadjee... do tell us all, which camera did you fancy after all? :)

Check out the Canon Powershot S20. It's a 3.3 megapixel with 8x digital zoom. I've been using the past 2 years, and I'm sure it's much lower in price nowdays. The quality of this camera is unbeleivable, and it's so compact, it'll just fit in your pocket.

10X Optical Zoom:
Olympus C-730 UZ has a typical internet price of $530 +S&H.
Olympus C-700 UZ has a typical internet price of $320 +S&H

The difference is that 730 is 3MP and 700 is 2.1MP. If you are not planning to frame too many enlargements of your digital pics than 700 is a better option.
