Best city/state in US

Re: Best city/state in US

Points to ponder when move.

1- Job
2- Schools
3-Community
4-Recreational activities
5-Weather
6-Price per sq foot for housing

Re: Best city/state in US

Dallas is dry and hot. Decent community. Flat. No real outdoor beauty except lakes. Cheaper living standard. Housing like anywhere is variable. Average house price psf is $89-120. Good housing maybe around 250/300 psf.
Great economy. House prices do not really go down much.

Houston. Larger desi community. Humid and hot. Has a beach. Not so clean. But OK. Housing similar to Dallas. Great economy.

Chicago. Too cold for some. Large community. Evenings are pleasant. Lots of places to eat desi food and hang aound. Not much natural beauty.

Dearborn/MI. Too ethnic. Good Middle Eastern food. Cold. Average housing. Economy not very high.

Canton/MI has good desi community.

West Bloomfield/MI. Good area to live. Richer community. Lots of trees and natural environment. Cold. Good housing. MI is not for oil related job?

SF. High priced houses. Lots of natural beauty around. SF has great weather. Too much to do outdoor. Overall expensive. But pays off if love outdoors.

Arizona. Hot and dry. Some community. Water shortage? Close to Nevada. Just walk over Hoover dam and you are in Nevada.

LA is hotter and has warm beach compared to SF or SD.

SD has not much desi community. Good weather. Expensive housing.

Florida. Miami is hot. Has beaches. Large community. Close to Disney. More liberal. Spanish language is a plus.

Re: Best city/state in US

Why don’t you want to come to Chicago now? :naraz:

Re: Best city/state in US

wow…thanks a lot guys, that was quite helpful. I think so far Houston sounds like the best place in terms of career oppurtunities and not to forget the big cheap houses.

Thanks for your feedback. :k:

Re: Best city/state in US

honestly hareem if i were you, the first chance i got to leave the uk i would jump on it. I visited Chicago last year and just fell in love with that place (and the US in general). so much so that im seriously considering looking for a job there within the next few years (thats how long it will take realistically). Loved devon avenue :). You pakistani americans are so lucky

Re: Best city/state in US

chicago..itz a great place to live..we have huge pakistani and indian community here..n m sure everybody loves devon :).expect da weather..i love chicago!

Re: Best city/state in US

Many desis live in Houston because during the 1980’s Reagan gave Illegals amnesty if they were employed in the farming industry.

Many illegal desis also applied for this and thus settled in Houston because the housing is cheaper.

I say this because even though you want a desi community nearby. I prefer to live with desis who are educated and who came here legally because generally educated desis don’t bring their old country habits with them. Uneducated and illegals do.

So just be careful in choosing Houston. You might get saddled with some really jahil desis.

Re: Best city/state in US

I have an uncle who moved to Houston (Sugar Land) from London.. For the same money he got a house that's literally 5 times the size the one he had here.. The weather is sooooo hot (but then again you don't feel it at all indoors) and the grass is strange and plasticky but it's a brilliant place imo..

Re: Best city/state in US

but if are in a posh area, you'll have more educated people, right? coz that's how it works in UK.

I don't mind the hot weather, in fact, I hate UK's weather.

Re: Best city/state in US

What kind of job in Oil and Gas you want to know about ? Houston is of course the best (for O&G jobs, not in terms of living at all). However, there are jobs available in refineries in other states, though my knowledge about downsteam business is limited.

btw, if oil and gas is your's or your husband's field of profession, best place i can suggest in coming years is Libya :D

Re: Best city/state in US

weather wasnt that bad when i went. was actually quite pleasant in the evening especially on lake michigan :D

Re: Best city/state in US

i'm going to go ahead an disgree with that mercenary sahib.

Houston is where the US energy sector is based out of, and it's a north american hub of medical research (there is a city of hospitals based out of there...). Most families I know revolve around those industries. In my professional opinion, houston has the most "presentable" most educated pakistani community by and large. I wouldn't mind living in the Katy Suburb, or even in town. There are no taxi cab pakistanis. not ONE!

Aside from the the silicon valley and the pacific northwest, I am actually ashamed of chicago and the northeastern pakistani community for its backwardness. I applaud houston brownies for setting a great example with their economic leadership and i remember even seeing respected pakistani politician who was the second highest represtative after mayor.

Re: Best city/state in US

These are good points, however in terms of being the hub of medical research, I disagree, its Boston hands down. Houston has a GREAT business environment, is the energy capital, and the Pakistani community seems to be decent.

Regrettably New York and Chicago have attracted the jahil types, although they have strong pockets of professionals.

Re: Best city/state in US

i may have overstated. I was blown away though by the "medical center" area in houston which I thought was downtown. It's a collection of about 25 hospitals and University affiliated medical facilities. Kind of cool.

I didn't mean to put down nyc and chi...but pakistanis over here only seem to strengthen negative stereotypes it seems.

edit: oh and their "desi area" was well kept too, as opposed to jackson heights, devon or even artesia in la.
