Many desis live in Houston because during the 1980’s Reagan gave Illegals amnesty if they were employed in the farming industry.
Many illegal desis also applied for this and thus settled in Houston because the housing is cheaper.
I say this because even though you want a desi community nearby. I prefer to live with desis who are educated and who came here legally because generally educated desis don’t bring their old country habits with them. Uneducated and illegals do. 
So just be careful in choosing Houston. You might get saddled with some really jahil desis.
