Re: Best Anti-virus suggestions
In my opinion and comparing AVG to Norton/Nod32/Avast/Kaspersky...from personal usage:
I'd say AVG is the least source-hogging and light on the system. Others will slow you down (sometimes it noticeable, sometimes it isn't).
I currently use Kaspersky Internet Security, and its superb.

upto version 7.5, it was. 8.0 is not unless u do some tweaking [recommended only if you are sure no one else will be using your system except you...like me]

And how did you reach that conclusion?
If you can't **notice **slowness, it really isn't slow now is it?

Yes it is noticeable(sometimes), and that's what led me to that conclusion.
Re: Best Anti-virus suggestions
Something is wrong with my pc. I can only open one IE window at a time. Could AVG be the cause?
Re: Best Anti-virus suggestions
^Nope. Not likely. I used AVG for years and never had a problem like that.
Do you mean it only opens one window and if you try to open another, it freezes? or if you click to open another window it closes the original one in place of the new one?
If it's the first issue, i suggest (if u haven't already) update to the latest IE, and the recommended browser, and a better alternative is Firefox.
If it's the 2nd issue then use these instructions:
Right-click on your Desktop Internet Explorer icon and select:
Properties > Advanced and uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts",
then click "apply".
Also, if you have yahoo toolbar added on there. Try disabling it. This is the simplest fix.
Have you run a virus check? I strongly suggest you run Spybot Search and Destroy, to trace any spyware that maybe sitting on your pc. It's free to download and it can pick up most traces. Also, run a virus scan.
Please update if any of that helps, and if not we'll figure out something else.
Re: Best Anti-virus suggestions
Teggy,
thankyou so much for replying.
It only opens one window, if I try to open a second, it looks like second will open up any minute but never does. The only way I can have aditional windows is thru clicking on a link.
I disabled Yahoo tool bar and unchecked "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts", neither of those helped. Havn't really found any threats either.
Hi I would suggest McAfee Total Protection you can get 1 year free subscription with your email. is easy go get fast.
Good Luck
Rakshas.
being using mcafee since 3 years i guess, it is better than avg, kaspersky, and norton just su??? takes over whole system.
we used avg and kaspersky on office system a year back i guess didnt detect the virus in system.
avast seems promising, as my mcafee key has expired may consider switching to avast.
i would be negating my own argument and had gone for NOD32 .
recently i got an virus alert with mcafee while browsing, deleted the file, and out of curiosity went with scan mcafee found nothing.
went to norton site and scanned the system it found one virus and one adware somewhere deepinside the system.
downloaded nod32 installed it and ran the scan it found three 2 that norton found and 1 more file which surprised me .
it was actually a ssh backdoor file i found on my server long ago and saved it as a text file and NOD32 also pointed that out.
it is best system i guess takes very few resources updates regularly and is running smoothly. would buy their subscription soon.

Re: Best Anti-virus suggestions
You've got to be kidding me???
So many replies and not even a single mention of ZoneAlarm??? Hands down the best all-in-one solution for home users. Use that along side with Trojan Hunter and DeepFreeze and you are set for life.
People using AVG have no idea how easy it is to bypass their "firewall" or fool their "anti-virus", if you have the source code to any rootkit and you simply add new signatures and a recent exploit, it’s impossible for AVG to detect it or remove it. It may detect the new registry entries that have been made at certain locations where rootkits usually hide but since the signature are different and not found in their database; it would simply let them off as a genuine program. It’s the same technique Sony used for years to steal music data from their consumers.
Oh and Kaspersky lovers... you're equally screwed. I don't know when was the last time you visited a security forum but there are more Kaspersky bypass and exploits then any other security suite vendor. Only a handful of enterprises use Kaspersky, most of them go with Trend Micro.
Now, Trend Micro is a solid security suite for detection but removal?? I'm not too confident about that. Macfee and Norton are the old boys of security industry and they have learned a lot from their mistakes but still Macfee beats Norton in most case scenarios.
NOD32 lovers.... no doubt about the small footprint on the system because the software itself was developed using C++ on a Visual Studio 6.0. The biggest issue I have with them is that their firewall is crap. Their antivirus is superb but the firewall is as bad as it gets. Even Kaspersky, which I think is pretty bad, has a better detection engine then NOD32. So what you have the best anti-virus? the rest of the features are terrible.
People wake up viruses are a thing of past when the operating systems were not as mature, it’s the rootkits and trojans that needs to be detected and a firewall that blocks these intrusions. A full featured rootkit or a trojan can be less than 100KB. 100KB is grossly an overstatement; I have seen full implementation in 68KB. You can easily attach that into any software executable. Perhaps offer a free game and attach the rootkit inside it, people install it wanting to play the game but end up being a part of a botnet. For home users, your best bet is ZoneAlarm Internet Suite. It might eat some recourse but I rather be safe then sorry. And use DeepFreeze, so no matter what happen you can always go back to the original state of your computer. I have installed multiple viruses/rootkits/trojans/spywares/ad-adwares and a simple restart with DeepFreeze removes everything. Beat that :)
it was actually a ssh backdoor file i found on my server long ago and saved it as a text file and NOD32 also pointed that out.
a. What ssh client are you using? f-secure?
b. I haven't heard of a virus creating a backdoor, the sole purpose of a virus is to spread itself and clog the internet. If thats done using some human help like using your contacts to email them the virus and fool them into openning it, you can classify that as a "Virus". If its done through some network or operating system exploit, then its classified as a "Worm". Whereas its the Trojans/Rootkits/Botnets families that likes to create backdoors :)
