They are increasing day by day. Mera walk karna haram hogaya hai. Every time I go for a walk (while at work in downtown), I see at least one begger in each street. They stop you and ask for money and I have a hard time refusing. Most of the times I change my way when I see one standing but a lot of times they seem like normal people who are walking down the street and as soon as you approach them, they start begging. I feel sorry for them and all, but come on!!!
I know they are everywhere in Pakistan, but are there any beggers in your town if you live abroad? How do you deal with them? Avoid them as I do or do you give them change?
dont you think you've open this in the wrong section?
khair..yes i know what you mean..i saw quite a few in karachi. The thing is i felt bad..i dont feel bad for the adults..but for the children. A few years ago when i went..i gave money n stuff. Then a bad experience with a "begger" changed that. I know they're not all the same..but seriously..they should do something about it...like getting a job.
As for here..yes i have seen some here..in Boston mostly. They go car to car..asking for money. I heard one got run over about a year ago. When i went to jackson heights like 2 years ago...there were old ladies on the sidewalks begging for money..and i gave her some..but then someone told me..that most of the people there..well it's like a hobby for them..you know..some people just do it..cuz it's like..they're lazy..i know that may not be true in most cases..but still..
when it's children it hurts..but adults..i mean really..get a job..do something..

Yeah, at least 4-5 times a week there's a beggar on the subway... Women who cry that theyre pregnant and need food for their babies (err oK!), always always kalay kids trying to sell candy for their basketball teams/for pockety money, and oh there's this one guy... huuuuuge dude, wears a burlap sack, has bags tied around his feet, glasses, and STINKS!!!..
No, I meant to open this thread here as I am not looking for any discussion, I am simply venting because I am very frustrated. Being a former cafe mod (for 3 years), I know the rules inside out as I am the one who came up with a lot of them.
Back to the topic, I agree, I also feel sorry for children as most of them are forced to do it. You are right, some adults do it just as a hobby or because they are lazy. Some people try to sell stuff, and I appreciate that and help them out. To give you an example, I was visiting Pakistan (Lahore) in 05 when a young girl (9-10) approached me and she was in dirty clothes and messy hair. She was selling hair clips. I was staying with my mamu's cousin (who was a student that time) and there were no ladies at the house. I still bought a packet of those clips just to support her.
It’s really sad to see homeless people in like Baltimore and DC. One time I saw these 4 guys and they were sleeping over this heating exaughst because it was cold out that night.
It is likely that these people may use the money you give them to just go buy drugs or something…so I think that if you really want to help those in need, you should donate to an organization or give money/clothes to a local shelter or something.

Lately I've been seeing this trend with Muslims as well. I know that they can be poor as well, but if they go the Masjid, they will find out that the Masjid has a surplus and they are LOOKING for needy people who are in need of money. Instead, those people (I've seen women so far) stand outside of the masjid with a handwritten note in their hand and ask for money. I am not sure if they are asking for money as the last resort, but if they aren't, they really need to work, even if it's washing dishes at restaurants or cleaning rooms in hotels.
Phatima at times, I agree. Sometimes they are just in need of a bottle of cold beer. I have come very close to taking them to a near by restaurant and paying for their food (for those who have posters saying they are hungry) but I am always in a rush and I don't want to take any risk of my life.
:)..yeh..when we'd go out for ice cream..and i'd see the little girls/boys selling roses..i'd like buy them all. Sometimes i'd just give money and they'd be like ..just take something..
seeing all that..and much more..has made me want to change it..i'm one of those people who cant see people suffer like that. However..sometimes it gets so annoying..like they follow you to your car..and like stalk you basically. I remember a few years ago..a kid in karachi..like chased me to the car..and he was pulling at my kameez..and he's like please madam..and i really didnt have money..so i was like i dont have any..he's like oh you're in a car..and you dont have money..in the end i had to like kick him..it was so odd...seriously..it's people like these...that make u wonder..

Yes they can be very annoying and stalking at times. During my same trip to Pakistan, I was standing at a bus stop waiting for the bus. This begger, who was smoking a cigarette, came to me and asked for money. I ignored. He asked again, I gave the standard reply "maaf karo baba". He then said something about how I looked rich but can't spare a few rupees to him. That ticked me off. I replied and said you wouldn't be begging for this money had you spent it on food, instead of your ayaashi and buying cigarettes. I moved away from that spot and he moved on to other people.
