Interesting that you bring this up. The verse you mention came down, by a lot of accounts, on the day of Ghadeer Khumm, when the Prophet (s) said for Ali: "For whomsoever I am master, 'Ali is his master". This, in fact, was the completion of religion. It is no surprise then to find a narration in al-Haakim's Mustadrak volume 3, page 371:
**We were with Ali on the day of al-Jamal when he sent word to Talha b.Ubaydallah: Come and meet me! Talha came to him and he said: "I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah say: "Of whomsoever I am master, `Ali is his master. O Allah, befriend the one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who is at enmity with him?"
He said: "Yes." He said: "Then why do you fight against me?"
He said: "I do not remember." He (the narrator) said: Then Talha departed.**
So I guess it is the question posed by 'Ali that awaits an answer !
