Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

Whatsup fellow pakistanians? DO you guys still munch on during winter nights, all the goodies available through street hawkers? Are they still affordable?

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

in my childhood, my village folks used to distribute bataashe [big N small] after every meelaad. i was not allowed to attend meelaads and i was also forbidden to accept these so-called tabarrukaat. i remember i used to go after the meelaad was over to get a bataashaa or two [big ones]. one time, we got small ones…got really annoyed and we started singing this:

yaa Habeeb salaam 'alaikaa
ham na leb chhuTkaa bataasa [we won’t accept small bataashaas]
ham to leb baRkaa bataasaa [send us (plz) the big bataashaas]

lolz

you wont believe but i hadn’t seen chilGhoza until i came to Canada. my Bhabhi loves it and she always asks her friends to bring some from Pakistan. i don’t like it that much. i prefer pistachios.

AligaRh Gazak is famous at least in Uttar Pradesh…Lucknow Gazaks aren’t too bad either. Master’s Gazak comes in various colors and flavors…some are made from guR while others with white and brown sugar.

you spelled Gazak with a “J” in the middle…it’s funny that in India, we [Muslims] call it as Gazak while Hindus called “gaJak”. :cb:

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

I think Gazak is only used in india. In Pakistan, we always say Gajak

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

ye to ulta hogaya… yaani India wale Zindagi kahen aur hum Jindagi :nahi:

On topic… chilgozay yes… Gajak and Batashe nahin. They are hardly seen nowadays. There used to be batashe distribution in weddings or on birth of a child, but don’t see this usage any more.

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

Really, no Gajak anymore? That is interesting. And who are the sellers (hawkers)? Are they bengalis, pathans or mix?

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

Dry fruit sellers are mostly Patahns. They do sell these items (gajak in Rs 10 pack) , but I don’t see common usage of batashe and gajak in our homes.

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

@muqawwee123 what do they distribute after meelaads in Pakistan? no bataashe? :frowning:

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

I think now its full dinner and those who don’t do that (can’t afford), they distribute some sweets like Baloo Shahi, barfi, etc

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

waah…Ghareeb bechaara meelaad meN bhii maar khaa gayaa…vaise, barfii, baaloo shaahii is still much better than bataashe.

yeh mahiina to meelaadoN kaa mahina hai…maiN India jaa rahaa huN, sochtaa huN via Pakistan jaauuN taa k meelaad meN bahtar tabarrukaat mil sakeN!

I object this fine dot. Mirchandani has not posted here.

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

OP only asked Pakistanis. So had to put a fine point.

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

yes.. but chilgoze, batashe aur gajak ki koi sarhad nahin hoti.

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

Sarhad yaani nationality?

Never heard of the above foods. Other than chilgoze in this forum circa one year back.

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

Sarhad is seema. not aunty seema biswas but border

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

Every winter night we used to have these - moon phalli and chilghozay!

Now they say they are Rs. 2,000.00 per kilo!

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

KKF ko kuch nahee milna India may! I mean milad aur niyaz wali cheez!

Re: Bataashay, Gajak, Chilghozay

Adjusted for inflation, that is a reasonable price. Plus, if you want to land a bargain, buy them by the pound, and sell them by the kilo.
