Basic Ingredients

Okay, so I’ll be setting up my new home pretty soon, and I was wondering what sort of ingredients I should invest in to keep in the cabinets. Other than basic spaghetti dishes, I really don’t have that much experience in cooking. So for example, I know to keep an assorted variety of pastas, crushed basil, parsely, and oregano in the cabinet. They wont go bad for a long time.

Now, with desi food, what sort of ingredients should I always try to have in my refrigerator? I just don’t want to buy a lot of stuff that doesn’t get used right away and that will go bad within a week. Either these things should be non-perishables. Or they should be ingredients that are used all the time in desi food.

I figured onions would be one of them. What else?

Re: Basic Ingredients

PCG, keep the guy in the kitchen. You won't have to worry about the rest, let him take care of it : )

Re: Basic Ingredients

well onions go bad after sometime as well and so do tomatoes unless you plan on cooking everyday. But these are def items you need to have in ur fridge at all times. Garlic cloves generally last a long time...in fact some people freeze them. Garlic paste and ginger paste is a must as well...and usually last for a long time.

stock up on rice and ALL desi spices and daals.

Re: Basic Ingredients

Instead of fresh tomatoes you can use canned ones since they are non-perishable.

Re: Basic Ingredients

yea i have some canned one's for back up...however the desi dishes always seem to taste better with fresh tomatoes.

a recipe i use with asparagus?

i typically add asparagus to my stir-frys.

or i steam it as a side dish with baked fish.

I dont add any seasoning to it if i steam it. i like it plain.

Re: Basic Ingredients

Fried onions in the freezer...what will they taste like when you reuse them...

Re: Basic Ingredients

daals dont go bad, u could keep them, rice doesn;t go bad either. if u stock up on tomato paste/puree, ginger garlic pastes, open them and don;t use them often enough just pour some oil on them, that will keep them from mold.

Re: Basic Ingredients

^ FF daals do get bad and they stink....
