I HATE Bratz dolls. They look trashy and disgusting. Though I'm not a huge fan of the body image that Barbie creates, I at least can understand the appeal. If my daughter received them as gifts, I probably wouldn't take them away, but I would not encourage them too much.
Barbies on the other hand...not so much (at least not what I remember).
Trust me my body image issues didn't come from playing with barbies...if its not barbies its seeing unattainable figures on tv/magazines/media, if not there then just being made fun of/poked at by mean kids/well-intentioned "adults..in other words it comes from everywhere :D
im sorry but barbie was a very sophisticated doll with so many careers and played various role models so taht every girl felt like she fit in. she was never marketed to sell her body… she was sold as a stewardess, or as a princess, or as a housewife, etc…
i had i think 20 or more… probably way more.. and i never took her for anything more than a doll. maybe i was just that.. a kid. and not a curious one at all at that
i do remember i had a desi friend who had just one barbie doll that i had given to her on her bday… (her parents werent a fan of it)… one day we were changing their clothes and i noticed that her breasts had been wrapped in sticky tape… upto that day i had never ever noticed my barbie’s boobs… they were just there and i never thought bout them… but that day seeing the sticky tape made me notice teh boobies.
The movie, Chucky, ruined dolls for me. While I'm not terrified of Barbies and Bratz dolls......dolls in general....give me the creeps. I don't like em.
I remember my mom once gifted a doll to a younger cousin of mine. It was a huge doll. It had on this long old fashioned silk/satin dress....that was blood red...and had black lace trimming going all the way down. The red and black combo is creepy too. I think she wore a hat....and had those old fashioned tube-like curls. Her eyes remained closed.....until you wound the key that played a lullaby tune....then the eyes would slowly open. Shudders After my cousins and I got done watching Chucky.....we all turned and looked at that doll standing on the dressing table....and ran the hell upstairs.
bwahahahaha! i was like you - i didn’t have 20, i had more like 7 or 8 and i actually still have them! my dadi even handmade me a lace wedding dress for one of them, complete with veil sewn in with pearls for the Barbie/Ken wedding i was planning with my bff at the time. i still have that dress too.
bratz dolls i hate- just the very name is enough to make me want to keep them far, far away from my kids.
On a slightly related note, my daughter was recently given a cheerleading doll. I don't love the fact that she's a cheerleader in a teeny skirt (but she's also a baby doll, so I guess it's okay), but what's worse is that her "cheer" is actually trashtalking the other team!
"Riding on a donkey
Sitting on a cactus
We think your team needs a little practice
Jump in the tub
Pull out the plug
There goes your team
CHUG CHUG CHUG!"
I only ever had one Barbie and one Sindy (she didn't look quite as trashy as Barbie).. They shared a house but had no furniture except a giant bathtub..
I was more into My Little Pony, Gremlins (how cute was Gizmo!) and anything animal/creature related..

my daugther was given a pregnant doll with a small baby in the stomach. We never gave it to her.
she has some barbie dolls and changes their cloths, its ok I guess not something to get upset over.

^ME TOO!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember after watching the movie, Gremlins, I actually wished they had a Gizmo doll. I'd watch the My Little Pony cartoons....and my cousin and I would braid the hair on the ponies' mane and tail. Then we'd stiff up the braids with hair spray. Open em up the next day....and they'd have a permed mane and tail.
Gizmo wouldn't have been bad....but Furbies are freaky.
hrm… see, i wouldn’t give my child one of these either… its not how i dress, or anyone in my immediate family either, the abaya/hijab i mean, so i think it would send equally confusing messages to my kid.
sahar, i hear you! i love walking through toys r us when i’m over at babies r us these days just to check out the latest version of the dreamhouse or the newest doll. ah, how i wanted the dreamhouse when i was a kid! i never played with a Barbie and thought, hey she’s so different from me, or ooh, i want boobs like hers when i grow up! i dunno, maybe i was just a really shallow kid and enjoyed her at face value only because of it? i loved brushing the hair and changing the outfits, etc. BUT then again, i was also in pakistan and it was so far from any reality i had, that a Barbie doll was just a Barbie doll to me. raising a little girl here might be challenging because you do see real-life Barbie’s walking around…
^ Yeah I never thought about it consciously, but I suppose it informs our subconscious image of beauty, and that can lead to insecurities when you see how you look in real life. But I think there's lots more than Barbies that affect that.
It's not only the dolls. Take a look at the heroines in the fairy tales.
Your post reminded me of this page on facebook:
Snow White lived alone with seven men. Jasmine was in a forbidden relationship with Aladdin. Little Red Riding Hood didn't listen to her mother and went out. Pinocchio was a liar. Robin Hood was a thief. Tarzan walked without clothes on.
