Barack Obama

U.S. (and Pakistan) could use more guys like this in office.

Obama quoted back in 1995, same as he ever was.

"Now an agenda for getting our fair share is vital. But to work, it can’t see voters or communities as consumers, as mere recipients or beneficiaries of this change. It’s time for politicians and other leaders to take the next step and to see voters, residents, or citizens as producers of this change. The thrust of our organizing must be on how to make them productive, how to make them employable, how to build our human capital, how to create businesses, institutions, banks, safe public spaces–the whole agenda of creating productive communities. That is where our future lies.

"The right wing talks about this but they keep appealing to that old individualistic bootstrap myth: get a job, get rich, and get out. Instead of investing in our neighborhoods, that’s what has always happened. Our goal must be to help people get a sense of building something larger.

“The political debate is now so skewed, so limited, so distorted,” said Obama. "People are hungry for community; they miss it. They are hungry for change.

“What if a politician were to see his job as that of an organizer,” he wondered, "as part teacher and part advocate, one who does not sell voters short but who educates them about the real choices before them? As an elected public official, for instance, I could bring church and community leaders together easier than I could as a community organizer or lawyer. We would come together to form concrete economic development strategies, take advantage of existing laws and structures, and create bridges and bonds within all sectors of the community. We must form grass-root structures that would hold me and other elected officials more accountable for their actions.

Re: Barack Obama

but these are the types of guys who dont get into power ufortunately. Race, religion, ethnicity, background etc play a huge part, not to forget size of pocketbook.

I am a big Obama fan. he helped us personally when we ran into issues dealing with the US consulate in casablanca for the adoption process, and the one time I did meet him he showed that he was very intelligent, approachable and sensible.

Re: Barack Obama

If he can raise 80-100 million US dollars, he's got a shot.

Re: Barack Obama

Realistically, I think his best bet is to run as a Veep candidate on Clinton ticket for '08. He has plenty of time to launch his own Presidential bid, eight years from now.

Re: Barack Obama

Power? He's already a senator Fraudia. $ isn't going to be a problem and those who vote based on race, religion, ethnicity aren't going to vote for a Dem anyway (much less a female one).

Re: Barack Obama

His problem is $$$s since Hillary fund-raising juggernaut will push him aside.

Re: Barack Obama

He is crap...he has little experience...and also remember that he was regularly and quite comprehensivly beaten in a race for sum office in illinois by a guy no1 knows nationally.

Re: Barack Obama

Obama will have the pockets to run. And $ isn't everything, Dean outspent Kerry by about 20%.

Question for Afrid? Does Bush have experience?

Re: Barack Obama

utd, would he find enough republicans voting for him to make him the president. There are many people who will not vote for him because he is a democrat, and many others who will not vot for him because he is black, or because of his family background etc etc.

I would be pleasantly surprised if he does become the president. I dont think that will be the case though. Dems will try to put forward an electable candidate, because they know that there are people who will not voe for someone on criteri such as race or gender etc. I am not sure if he will even get the nod from dems as a presidential candidate for this very reason.

and I know he is a senator from Illinois, but illinois is different than the red states ya know.

Re: Barack Obama

Hillary is not Dean, she is a formidable opponent with solid name recognition behind her which Obama doesn't. Obama would have to reach a LOT of people via tv commercials and that will require cash.

Yah he wus gov'nor of good ol teeexas, wadnt he. Experience isn't everything, but doesn't hurt....

for the sake of the democratic party, neither he or clinton shud run, because they would lose, just because he is black, and she is a woman, simple as that.

Re: Barack Obama

hillary is universally liked..mainly because of Bill. and then she is universally loathed partially due to bill and mainly due to her.

Re: Barack Obama

Red states will go red and Blue states will go Blue.

If anyone has been following US Elections, midterm and Presidential, the deciding vote are done in Iowa, Ohio, Indiana and Florida. If Obama or any other candidate can win three out of these four, you have your President.

If you look at '04, Kerry lost to Bush in Ohio with little over 114,000 votes. His VP could not get him his state or Iowa. If Obama losses Presidential Election, it will not be his color, race, background or experience, it will be these states and to win these states you need to have support of the governor, senator and people who will do the ground work for you. Kerry could not win Iowa because Iowa senator Tom Harkin was supporting Dean, if you look at his infamous Hee-haw video, he is quite visible. After that Kerry could not get that ground support like Dean.

Obama has a problem because the core Democratic Party is with Hilary and come Election time, I do not think he will be able to convince them. Bush on the other hand is the core of Republican Party and that is why McCain is kissing his boots. If you want to win Presidency from Republican Party, get Bush's blessing.

Re: Barack Obama

as wierd as may this sound, the repuclican party winning the electiosn in 2008 is actually better for pakistan...

Re: Barack Obama

I think Hilary Clinton would be best president for this current period of time, because listening to what Bill has to say, i was really impressed, and pretty sure both Hilary and Bill share similar views and opinions, it would be great.

Re: Barack Obama

Billary will chew up the rookie Obama and spit him out.

Re: Barack Obama

but not better for people of Pakistani background in USA.

The whole Dems-are-bad-for-Pakistan angle was churned thoroughly in an earlier discussion. Click here to read all about it.

I can't decide who to vote for...Mccain, Rudy, Hilary or Barak

Re: Barack Obama

To the people living in US, I have a question -

is America realistically ready to vote in a black President?
