Ban Pakistani artists in India!

‘Why should we give Pakistanis a chance?’

March 25, 2003 15:41 IST

Pakistani artistes and singers have performed in India for a long time.
Singer Abhijeet recently protested this phenomenon. ‘Why should we allow these people into our country to perform when we are not welcome in their country?’ he asked in a letter to the Government of India.
Along with bhajan singer Anoop Jalota, ghazal artiste Jagjit and playback singers Kumar Sanu and Jaspinder Narula, Abhijeet asked the government to ban Pakistani artistes from performing in India.
“We don’t play cricket because our people are being killed by them. Why should we allow their singers to perform here?” he asks Associate Editor/Chief Correspondent Syed Firdaus Ashraf.
What have you written to the prime minister?
We are seeking the government’s help in banning [the entry of ] Pakistani artistes [into India].
I was hurt when I heard about the atrocities Indian artistes face in Pakistan. Our artistes are banned there – from performing as well as on television.
One can’t even attend a wedding without them [Pakistani authorities] being suspicious that you might perform there.
But Pakistani artistes are welcomed in India; they make money. Some even settle down here.
I ask that our government should consider the dignity of our artistes. There are Indian Sufi singers, ghazal singers and pop singers here as well who do not get a chance.
Why should we give Pakistanis a chance?
[Ghazal singer] Jagjit Singh was sent back to India when he wanted to perform in Pakistan. We gave much respect to [playback singer] Noorjehan, felicitated her, but Lataji [Mangeshkar] was denied a visa to Pakistan.
We [Indians] cannot play cricket with them. We have no relations with them. But they seek refuge in our culture.
Lucky Ali performed in Pakistan three years ago. Lataji refused the Pakistan Cricket Board invitation to perform.
She must have refused because she was denied the visa earlier. How can she go there again? It is humiliating.
You tell me, how many Indian singers are shown on Pakistani television? None. Why should our channels show them?
As for Lucky Ali, I don’t know whether he has Indian or New Zealand citizenship. Check with him.
Do you listen to Pakistani music?I used to listen to [ghazal artistes] Ghulam Ali and Mehdi Hasan. Now I don’t.
They can make money here, but we cannot make money there. Look at Adnan Sami.
What have you got against him?
I met many Pakistanis in Houston, America. They are very angry with Adnan because he never says he is proud to be a Pakistani.
But he is a British citizen.
No. He holds a British passport. If a Pakistani comes [to India] via some other country, does it mean he is not a Pakistani?
Is it professional rivalry speaking?
No way. I have sung 200 hit songs.
At the cost of my career, I am taking on these Pakistani singers. People say I am doing this for publicity. Why?
What publicity do I need? My songs are being played all over on television from morning to evening. I am seen on television channels.
But music is for everyone. These artistes have not harmed anyone.
Let me give you an example of [the late] Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He was a qawwali singer in Pakistan. No one knew him. As soon as he landed in India, we gave him such a rousing welcome, he became world famous.
He then said in an interview, ‘I have come [to India] to settle the score.’ You understand what this means for India?
What does it mean?
I don’t know. But what am I to think when a person from an enemy country says that?
But people enjoy their music.
Who said that? Our music has 100 per cent audience in Pakistan compared to theirs in our country.
Who else has joined this protest with you?
There are many NGOs angry about our artistes being treated badly in Pakistan. When they came to know Adnan Sami and Abida Parveen are Pakistanis, they got very angry.
We call Pakistani singers to perform here. Our heroines dance with them; that is bad.
What does your letter say?
We have four chappatis to eat in our country. Why do we need to share that with our enemy country?

If Pakistani artists get banned from India, then Indians will have no decent entertainment :)

Twisted logic regardin’ NFAK by Abhijeet but you’re so right about NFAK’s settled score.

NFAK became well-known in Pakistan in the mid of 80’s & beginnin’ of 90 decade; and World Wide, when he performed Live, particularly in France, Spain and UK. NFAK became famous World Wide ‘cause in his music, there’s always a clash of Western and Eastern music, which everybody loved it. Since then, everyone is copyin’ this art. Qawaali, I second that! It wasn’t India behind giving popularity of NFAK World Wide. NFAK did on his own. Keep in mind this pharse:-

MJ creates Magic. NFAK was a Magic–>Magician of Music.

Before even the released of Afreen album in India, which was btw the duo of Javed Akhtar(lyrics) and NFAK(music and vocals), NFAK was famous in India. Certainly, it was an agreement b/w JA and NFAK. And album was a BANG in the sub-continent. Top on charts on the day, it got released. To say, Indians gave respect to Pakistani Artists, and they became famous overnight doesn’t hold a valid argument. Well-known Bollywood Music Directors Anu Malik and Nadeem Sarvan have copied music of NFAK.

What’s next? Alamgir, Mohammad Ali Shaki, Nayyar Noor, Alan Fakir started their Music Careers in India? Nazia and Zoeb Hassan sang songs for the movie Star 'cause they couldn’t find job in Pakistan? Bring on…

If Indian Artists make decent Music Videos, as Fret Wizard’s simple statement said it very well, it will be on Pakistan Television. Abhijeet, how did you get calculate 100% Pakistani fans of Indian Music? :rotfl:

Btw, I’d like to know when Lata and Jagit’s visas were denied? 'Cause, era will explain the behind the scene show.

Keeping emotions aside, the guy has a point. I hope they do ban Pakistani artists, except my reasons are quite different. I'm not comfortable with how they all run over to India the first minute they get. Instead of building an industry in Pakistan, (which they could totally do if they channeled the talent in the RIGHT direction and if they could provide the right opportunities to struggling stars), they run off to India to promote their own fame.

All the well-run record companies in India became well-run record companies because they worked at it. What is holding Pakistani recording companies back? How about we Pakistanis work honestly for once for the COMMON GOOD rather than scurry around trying to stuff our pockets with as much money as we possibly can in minimum time?

Just out of curiosity,I would like to know if Indian songs are officialy available in Pakistan. In India,Pakistani songs are available officially thru HMV and other music companies.

Namaste Deekay Bhai,

Kaisay hain aap?

Indian songs are available in Pakistan, officially from Sonic Music companies. This is what I heard from my friends, who are fond of A.R Rahman music.

PCG, Congrats on being a Moderator. ;) Indian Music Company doesn't have a copyright, FYI. If they had one, Bollywood would have been bankcrupted now. Piracy in Bollywood is common. :)

I think Pakistan sud ban anything to do with Bollywood!

Kameenay chotay dil key malik indians…

I mean check us Pakistanis out… we watch thier movies, go to thier concerts…order thier channels and they dont wanna allow our peole in India??

Aren't Indian movies banned in Pakistan already. In Pakistan theatres that is?

good for this writer. maybe now people will open their eyes.

honestly it isn't that hard to avoid Bollywood or Bharati entertainment people. And btw, if you guys actually make an effort to listen to our own music you will realize that our music people is streets ahead of the Indian music scene.

please, support our music industry. it has tonnes of potential and more importantly, it is our own.

well it's a start, they sud ban their posters cassete, films dvd etc... we are giving them so much support and we get repaid by them wanting to stop the odd star going over too India

Ideally, it'd be nice if both countries could appreciate the arts and not bring politics into this whole thing. But since politics is inevitably involved, and we can't move above that, i hope they ban the pakistani artists. This way as PcG said, they'll have no choice but to work in Pakistan and that too for the better i hope.

ok I got something else to say.
Abhijeet said in that interview that Indian artist are banned in Pakistan. So what is that Indian guy doing in Shehzad Roy video Jina Kar Lo Ge Pyaar? what's his name manjeet or something like that. As far as I know that video was shot in Pakistan with all the Pakistani actors and directors.

Abhijit is such a loser and a copy cat !! He and many of his friends like Kumar Shanu etc owe their careers to Kishore Kumar. I am sure Pakistan govt must have heard his voice and then denied him the Visa. They did such a great service to the people of Pakistan by denying this idiot a Visa.

Indian govt must not ban Artists from across the border even if Pakistan govt does so.

:rotfl:!!!

aah man! cracked me up! esp when talking about his looks :rotfl:
:k:

and what da hell..indian ppl do work wid pakistanis…as Dr. Evil pointed out Sukhbeir is in the video JINNA KERLO GE PIYAAR wid SHEHZAD ROY ! sajjad Ali wid them indian dancers in his video cinderella (they were indian right?)

is he like jealous of the pakistani singers or something? Indians like paki singers better?
sigh
yeah..working our way to good realations wid each other..way to go Abhijet two thumbs up

hum pakistan sey muzakraat karnekey keyliye tayyar hain except kashmir… to pakistan iss per bhi muzakrat shroo karday:rotfl:…
