So let’s say you’re in the middle of a rishta proposal. The guy seems nice, you’ve met him a few times and all but the family lives in another country. How do you go about checking “background” such as family reputation, criminal records (!!), other socio-economic essentials? The guy lives in USA so a lot of information may be available online, but please do share your experiences.

My brothers have worked at places owned by the police and I have volunteered at places that require you to provide proof of a background check. This was in Canada and cost about $30. I'm pretty sure the person who's background is being checked has to go in and ask for it themselves though so that might be a bit awkward.

Step one - Google.
Step two - Call friends/relatives in the guy’s country of residence and get them to stalk him and relay info back to you.
Step three- Call in a favour at the old workplace.

To add: Don't leave out yahoo and bing or any other search engines from other countries. Try old and new social network sites. The accounts may be accesible :D

Brilliant suggestions, but so far I haven't seen people posting their criminal record and mugshots on their facebook. Your friend Mr. Decent Guy could be a psycho serial killer for all you know.

Either take a chance or try evey possible way electronic or personal.
Why not wait till meet family or find someone with less of the risk?
