Back Home Gifts

How’z everyone doing??

I am so excited these days…going back home after a long timeeee. Though I am busy with shopping, I am lost at the same time.

I am not sure what to take back home as gifts. For little girls, I am thinking of taking those bath and body gift bags [quite cheap at this time of the year]..but no idea what to take for my guy cousins and uncles/aunts.

Any one have any ideas from personal experience?

Re: Back Home Gifts

No gifts unless immediate family member. Otherwise, just get a cake from gourmet before going to their house. Or a box of chocolates.

Re: Back Home Gifts

^ i think u don't know the habits of desi ppl....

Re: Back Home Gifts

a shrek dvd

Re: Back Home Gifts

Princess...I don't really care about their habits. I'm tired of desis acting like they are too good for my gifts. I used to put a lot of thought and money into these gifts and then they are thrown back at me like oh "this is made in china, it is not good" or whatever. Go to hell desi relatives - you are only getting a cake out of me.

Re: Back Home Gifts

i told u! get them a shrek DVD!

Re: Back Home Gifts

buy diamonds.......it 'might' make em happy

Re: Back Home Gifts

ICAM! We spent so much time, money, and thought into getting gifts for all of the cousins/uncles/aunts, everyone, last summer, only to hear "why didn't you bring me ______?" We even made sure that there was something for everyone and that we brought everything on the nieces and nephew's list -greedy brats! One nephew wanted to know why we only brought PS2 and not PS3 - and it wasn't even out yet!

Re: Back Home Gifts

Beyblade was all the thing last year, so we took some of that for the younger boys. They also really liked the Lego Bionicles, they have some that come in a small plastic container that are around $10.00. We took perfumes and cologne for the aunts/uncles, also handbags for some closer aunts. For the older/more religious aunts we took some of those heavily beaded cardigans that they sell around christmas time (obviously not the ones with a tree, snowman, or other holiday thing on it). We also took a lot of gadgets - but my husband picked those out.

Re: Back Home Gifts

Tell me about it...I even bought a gorgeous $100 sweater for a certain immediate relative and she has the nerve to tell me after a year that it is not good quality because it got linty!! EXCUSE ME IF YOU WASH IT EVERY SINGLE FRIKKEN DAY, what do you expect???? Or the Nine West shoes I bought for $130. I was told that you can buy better shoes in Liberty (yeah right). And what is with my cousin asking me to buy him a computer? I've only met you like 3 times in my entire life and you want a computer? slap. Ungrateful ppl!!

Re: Back Home Gifts

^LOL, we had a laptop request from an uncle who boycotted our wedding and our kid's aqiqahs, and tried to get everyone else to do the same. I wouldn't give him the time of day, let alone a computer! I told my husband that our next visit will be a surprise - that way people who don't normally speak to me will not be e-mailing me their "bhabi can you bring" lists.

Re: Back Home Gifts

walmart and payless for relatives back home. they cant tell the difference anyways.

Re: Back Home Gifts

I noticed a few things that were especially appreciated. Colognes and perfumes, nice shampoos, nice makeup. "Real" levis for the guys, or "real" name-brand shirts like izod....also nice chocolates and candies. Ladies who you are really close to just love the bras and panties that we can get here, it seems to be difficult to find really nice ones over there but yeah thats a really personal gift. Even simple things like everyday deodorants/antiperspirants, toothpastes....a really nice idea may be to go to costco or sam's and get soaps, shaving creams, lotions, potions, toothpaste etc in the packages of 8 or so, then get some really nice gifty bags and colored tissue paper and make up your own mens bath sets, same thing for the ladies.

Re: Back Home Gifts

Well, same thing happend to us year after year but finally it was different, Last year winter we took Teflon gloves for motorbike riders, small but nice looking perfumes for youg girls and guys.

We did not took any electronics or cloths, except cloths for very young babies which you can not find much variety and quality in Pakistan. Small packs of Lindt choclates for families where ever we visit we gave them that, and Toblerone Yes mini bars about 4 - 5 KG for kids which kept them happy.

Maybe the same will not work for everyone but it worked for us.

My mom wud go to 28th n broadway and buy wholesale stuff, hairclips, chinese slippers, makeup kits etc. She'd get the exact same stuff, so that later on no one wud complain "u got her something better" :)
