Back combing hair/teasing hair

Do you girls have tips on how to tease hair to give it more volume??? I recently bought a teasing comb but have not been able to achieve the look that I want. :frowning:

Also - do you find that doing this damages your hair??? I read up on this and it said to avoid back combing if you can because it is bad for your hair. Those of you that do this alot… what do you consider the condition of your hair?

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

Oh it hurts when u take it out but i guess u need it for height n all. But getting it done often is weird n stupid n very damanging 2 the hair.

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

Punjabi rose, I section the hair I wanna back comb, put my head upside down and tease away with a comb. When I lift my head back up it normally looks like a huge mess, but then you can ease it out and mould it to look the way you want. Too much back combing too often can be harmful, but bits and bobs here and there wont be too bad. Just remember to condition your hair to keep it looking healthy. And to be gentle when you brush it out so you dont break too many hairs. Youtube some videos, thats where I learnt how to do it.

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

Get those bump-it thingies.

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

I usually section it. I start frm the root and go higher up. I notice it usually works better with not clean hair. As in dont wash your hair for a day or 2. I watched a youtube video and she basically back combed it, then hairsprayed the root, and then dryed it with a hairdryer. to keep it in place!

They're SO difficult to use. It's near to impossible to put them in your hair yourself.

Don't get them! It's a sham...they are sooo hard to use.
waste of time and money.

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

^

I totally agree. I bought them but haven't really used them.

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

backcoming isn't that great because it breaks a lot of hair. for some reason it's never looked neat whenever i've done it..my hair just looks tangly and unsmooth. i've been trying to figure out a way to get volume on my crown but i haven't figured out how yet. i use volumizing shampoo and i've tried volumizing mousse but that makes absolutely no difference. the ONLY thing that gives some volume is blow drying damp/slightly wet hair with your head down. when you put your head back up your hair will look like something exploded in it but then when you brush it and get the tangles out, you will notice some volume. it seems to wear down after sometime though, maybe using hairspray on it will keep it in place.

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

i've tried my own back combing and i just cant do it...my hair does the opposite, the tangles come out so easily!
I dont think its so bad, to do it 2/3 tiems a year

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

i dunno if it damages hair or not..but i have a very simple and easy solution to open back combing... and that is to apply a large amount of conditioner on ur hair and then wash the hair…u wont have tangles or rough hair and back combing easily khul jaye gee…

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

^i never apply conditioner to the top of my head. that's where i want volume, conditioner just makes that area oilier and deflated.

Really? I've never used them but all my friends do and they love it. I was thinking of buying one too.

^ where do you get them? and what are they called? also could they be used to give "fullness" to those of us who have fine, thining hair

I am told the same trick by MUAs whenever I get backcombing done…but I always forget to try this :bummer: so not sure if it works.

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

I'm going to try again using you girls advice the next time i have an event to go through...

So I asked one of my best friends how often she backcomb's her hair.... She lives far away so I have not seen her in a few years. But I have noticed in her pictures that she has so much volume in her hair. She told me that backcomb's her hair EVERY DAY!!!! I was like omg .... she has been doing it for years.... and mA her hair is so beautiful and stunning. Our conversation cut short... or else my next question would have been what does she do to keep it from getting damaged. ....

...... to be continued.....

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

i backcomb my hair ALL the time, like literally ragg it. And my hairs not damaged at all. Its silky and smooth. So i dont no where 'it damages hair' comes frm.

I agree with mixed beauty i backcomb all the time and my roots are not damaged. Also my mom’s generation were all about this style and her hair was down to her knees, strong and silky.

Here are some pictures of my different backcombing styles through the years. I have very silky hair so curls don’t last all night (unless i spray tons of hairspray and i’m not up for that crunchy feel). In the collage picture to the far left you can see i used the hollywood bump-its and clipped my hair half up however as long as you backcomb the base where the bumpit will sit and hairspray it you should be fine. My hair being silky backcombs don’t last all night but bumpits prevents that, kept it’s shape all night and is fine to dance with (used it for a friend’s engagement). It was the easiest way i’ve found to create this look, normally i have to rest my hands bc i’m so tired of teasing and with this it was really easy, no resting needed.

The middle two were for weddings and you can see the shape difference. the two on the left have a nice curved look to it where the 2 on the right have an anthill like look to it. A bit conehead like, I am not fond of that. So if you are backcombing always remember to provide not only enough height but enough support for the sides of the crown. Once again bumpits makes it super easy to keep the right shape. The reason for the anthill is because most of us don’t tie our hair back every day. So naturally the sides of our hair is used to being parted and are prone to falling on the side that it’s normally parted on. so pay extra attention to that part of the hair.

this was my favorite. I got the idea from a youtube video and i’ll try to look for it. However I was playing around with looks for my halloween costume. That’s all my real hair, not hairballs or bumpits for support however in pakistan you can get some great hairball inserts that work similarly to bumpits so why not?

Anyhow getting a teasing comb like this was great because the metal wider teeth is what’s used to smooth the look. (you tease your hair so it looks like a birds nest reserving a thin layer over hair to go over the nest. however you still get a few crazy hairs that need to be smoothed down andyou can use hairspray, a hot curling iron to kinda brush over the top and force to sit and the wider teeth). Also i used a technique where I parted my crown area (where the braid is) and I used a 1inch curling iron to curl a little hill per se and sprayed with hairspray that was going to be crunchy and strong freeze hold. I then waited for it to cool and teased that. The curling iron helped get that bump shape. I then secured a clip to the back of it and sprayed the top part of my hair with dove. Then I removed it and it kept my hair in place all night. Because my hair is used to be side parted i’ve found when I created the shape i wanted and put a clip in and sprayed more of it the hair **was trained to stay in that shape without needing the support of the clip keeping it in place. **

Anyhow i’ll try to find that youtube video and i wish you ladies lots of luck because I love this look and have bee doing it since 03 for special occasions here adn there and on a normal basis a slightly baccomb according to my parted hair bc my hair is really flat and when you have big cheeks flat hair just makes u look fat.

I like to use this periodically

here is what inspired me to do the braid thing:

this is a way better technique of the curling iron trick then i was shown at a salon. it looks easier than what i did where you wrap it around the curling iron, and i did burn my head a few times nothing serious but it’s hard to do that so this moving it side to side seems much easier and offers the same result. I do think with desi hair we tend to be more thicker, heavier and silkier so i would tease the lower layers still.

Re: Back combing hair/teasing hair

^ AWESOME tips!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!
