"Bachiyaan"

I have now had the privelege of hearing this term used in many circumstances. Guys will use it to refer to girls they wanna ****. I have yet to hear any respectable man refer to his wife in this way, or a respectable man refer to his fiance or girlfriend or friend in this manner either, unless he is doing it privately and I have no clue.

Usually it’s used in the sense of "oh your girlfriend’ when guys in the group really dont consider the relationship a serious one. More like “girlfriend” “whore friend” “bed buddy”

I made up bed buddy, not sure if that’s a real term, but whatever, you get my point.

I also now heard it used by shireen anwar, the respectable COOK on pakistani television - she used in reference to young girls (I’m assuming any girl younger than herself). She was doing a dua - a long-winded one at that - prior to sharing her biryani recipe with the audience and she went off praying to God that he grant all the “bachiyaan” looking for husbands, a proper husbands, that the “bachiyaan” who are looking for jobs, to help them get jobs, and (this was the killer), the “bachiyaan” who are ALREADY MARRIED AND HAVE HOMES AND KIDS to keep their household peace intact.

Someone PLEASE EXPLAIN to me why we as a group of ethnic people, refer to ADULT WOMEN as “bachiyaan”.

When exactly do you become an “Aurat”?

When you’re 60, and finally society decides, ok, well, she’s now had grandkids, can’t call her a bachi anymore.

I bring this up, because I wonder whether this terminology reflects our views on women as subservient, to not be taken seriously, frivolous, childish OR have we generated this terminology to DELIBERATELY change our views on women to have them viewed as children?

I don’t see how you can be calling a woman who is an adult - looking for a job, looking for a mate, already married and running a household, what have you, as a “BACHI”, and then I also don’t get why guys use this terminology, because I HOPE they’re not harboring pedophilic tendencies by wishing their girlfriends were 8 yrs old.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

kidar hain bachiyaan.. i ain't gonna read that essay .. so bachiyaan kidhar hain?

Re: "Bachiyaan"

PCG u consider this a negative word since your exposure to it is negative.

When older women use it, they use it like betiyan. And it is very respectable

But yes, guys using this term, is exactly in the way you described it

Im sure the cook meant no harm and was giving a dua

Re: "Bachiyaan"

You sound like goshi and sharukh -_-

Re: "Bachiyaan"

real term is bed bug, but in case of certain females, its interchangeable.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

oh come on PCG ... you know this isn't restricted to desi culture or any particular ethnic group! Not everything needs to be divided along ethnic lines ...
these particular ways of addressing women are pretty ubiquitous across the world.
don't tell me you haven't heard it in usa ... women of all ages are referred to by men as ... honey, hun, honey-chile, sweet-pea, sugar, chick, chicki, chiquita, mamma, hot mamma, babe, baby ... and the list goes on ... what I've listed are just a few of the polite names.

reasoning is simple ... older person calling a younger person ... child, bachi, bitiya etc ... is meant as an honorific.
men using it for their female contemporaries ... ranges from affection to lust to derision.
you dont like it? ... fight it!.. anytime I'm called honey/sugar crap by some random male ... I tell them not to call me that right then and there. Stops them cold and they never repeat the mistake.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

My parents and their friends/generation still refer to us 20- 30- somethings as bachiyaan, married or unmarried. What's the big deal?

I've never heard it used by someone of the same generation.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

I had never heard the term used in it's negative connotation ever, in our family we use bachiyan very casually to refer to the daughters of the house.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

guys do use it in somewhat negative way ...but nothing too insulting

like, oye Jamal to hamesha bahchiyon ke chakakar main paRa rehta hai.
or, tum college tou srif bachchiyon ke chakkar main jaatay ho ..waghera waghera ..

Re: "Bachiyaan"

You're over-analyzing IMO. In America, people call older women "girl" or "pretty lady" as a complement, to make them feel like they're still young. That said, I've hung out with people who refer to girls they are attracted to as "bachiyaan." The girls in question were probably between 18 and 22.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

I've never heard it this way, sounds vulgar the way you say it PCG. I've actually heard it **once **used in a very affectionate way from a husband to his wife and i though it was sweet :)

Re: "Bachiyaan"

damn.. never seen GS so united.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

I've heard eligible males referred to as murghay by desi girls. Considering that the English term for murgha is not a nice word, guys could really take an offense to that, but you dont see them complaining, do you.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

Same word different meaning ... bachi literal = small girl ... bachi (term replacement) = equivalent to "ho" (American slang)

Older people do not use it to mean the secondary use of the word but the primary use of the word. Secondary use is a slur in my opinion. It started off in the punjabi Indian groups first.

Re: “Bachiyaan”

My guess is you’re hanging around the wrong kind of guy. :hmmm:

Re: "Bachiyaan"

As oppose to making a valid point about the insanity of our culture?

Yeah. Ok.

The word "bachiyan" just doesn't get used in any of our households. If I was used to hearing it, I wouldn't be so surprised about it.

Re: "Bachiyaan"

Haha, I remember this pathan selling cloth in the bazaar once called me "baby" when asking "baby ko kaunsa design pasand aya?" or something like that.

I told him obstinately, I'm no "baby" that I'm a "woman" thank you very much.

He was like oh ok, sorry sorry.

:D

Re: "Bachiyaan"

These days it is all about equal rights, yeah? I suggest you get even with them by calling some nicer one bachchaas! ;)

Re: "Bachiyaan"

That would be disrespectful thought, wouldn't it, if I called a full grown man a "bacha"? Wouldn't a guy take offense to that? Doesn't a man want to be called a man? I didn't think a man would want to be referred to as a kid.

At least whenever I've told Lizard or Boy number 2, "Ok, kid, ttyl", they're like "I'm not a kid"

shrugs So why call a woman a "bachi"?

Re: "Bachiyaan"

I had a conversation like that with some desi telemarketer. :D
