Baby Presents

One of my closest friends in the UK will be having her first baby this October. I want to get her something really nice and special but I have no idea what. Whatever it will be, I will probably have shipped over … or, I may just order it online and have it delivered to her directly.

I have no idea what to get though. She doesn’t know whether she’s having a boy/girl. I haven’t really had much contact with babies/children so I don’t have any clue or know where to begin.

Any ideas?

Price Range?

100 pounds so about $260 Canadian.

If it was a baby girl, the best gift would be some cute little jewelry that she can keep forever. But as you don't know the gender yet, some potential gifts can be:

1) A baby book
2) Rug - for her to play on when she gets to be a few months old
3) Blanket

You can buy toys and clothes but they usually go unnoticed in the huge pile of similar gifts.

The two very original gifts my daughter received were: 1) an embroidered bib with her name on it, our friend didn't made it herself but instead got it done from somewhere in the mall. 2) A blanket with her name knit by one of our family friend herself.

I would suggest you wait to find out the name & sex before sending out a gift. You can’t really be original by trying to buy something unisex.

any thing that will keep the baby quiet will be very much appreciated by new moms... so things like vacuum cleaners and blenders should also be considered...

The babies I've been around only got louder with those things. :-\

^ Don't mean to de-rail the thread any further but just a quick comment.. it depends on the age of the child... infants are usually stunned by this kind of noise and some even enjoy it and forget about crying and some cases even go to sleep... as they start to grow older they become afraid of it, and then as they start to understand it better and learn it won't harm them they start to take pangas with them.... it is all learning stages...

How about one of those hanging toys on top of the crib? It plays musical tunes and has all kinds of lights inside the toys.

baby caps, stuff toys, knitted baby wear

CB, could it be you?

A hundred pounds will go far.
Just don't waste it on things like crib toys and the like.....kids get more than they need of those and they grow out of them.

I like the 529 plan that Mats mentioned. Or something along those lines. See if you can contact HSBC, they have branches here in Toronto and set up an account for the kid. Tell them the last name and see if they will open something online that can be ammended later to reflect the correct name etc. This gift will have loads of sentimental value because you will have gone to great lengths to set it up and it will likely last a lifetime.

For those who are recommending the 529 Plan, this baby is in England!!!

And no, I am not trying to derail the thread.

Mehnaz, get out of the 'how much it should cost' thinking. I know you only mentioned the money when asked by a poster...but seriously buy something that would not only be useful but also memorable.

May I suggest a Memorobilia Box?. They have these fancy ones where the parents can store a lot of stuff (first hair, her hospital pics, a copy of the newspaper on the day of birth, her hospital checkout bill, etc)...

Good luck...

PS. No sexual inuendos this time :p

^ A memorable post indeed.
