Ever make the mistake of telling someone (a relative/close friend) your favorite name that you were saving for your child? doesnt it suck when that relative/close friend takes the name you were holding on to? ..![]()
Re: Baby Names
I guess it never happened to anyone ![]()
Re: Baby Names
it happened to me ages ago.. I loved the name Laiba back in 2002 and I shared it with a few family friends here in the US.. next thing I know, they named their niece Laiba.. good thing is I dun like this name anymore.. I would have gotten over it anyway. :D
Re: Baby Names
hmmmmm...No...but now i am warned not to reveal their names....lol
Re: Baby Names
I was really mad...i wudnt tell any1 my choice of names for that precise reason. Hubz and i chose them and i only asked my immediate family what they thought.
Re: Baby Names
when i got pregnant, i just asked my friends and fam for names... but when we decided which one we wanna take, we didnt tell anyone!
i think, that should be a secret! and would go crazy, if some1 would take "MY" name! hahaha...
Re: Baby Names
yeah, one cousin had announced her proposed name for her kid..and then as soon as we announced, she changed it. Now they claim that they had thought f it for several months, except for the fact that internal sources err...their own parents slipped up and spilled the beans.
and then one cousin took the name of our daughter, first and middle, I mean come on how likely is that, and then said oh yeah some buzurg told us about that name...sure :)
if someone picks the same name by chance that is fine, but copy cats just annoy me, and then they dont say hey we liked he name so much we thought we would use it too, its always...oh yeah we thought if it independently...right so why do emails to your parents have been on deciding a diff name and the name you stole was no where on the list..etc :D
Re: Baby Names
If i'm not mistaken, is it considered "flattery" to name your kid the same name as someone close in teh family? Iv'e noticed, desis aren't generally into the whole creativity/individuality thing....
Re: Baby Names
yeah flattery would be if they admit that they chose it because they liked what you oicked, but whe they insist that they came up with the name all by themselves then it is just annoying. I am like, fine man, u came u with it all by yourelf, why do u have to state it when i am not saying anything, chor ki darrhi mein tinka i think :)
Re: Baby Names
lol! mr.fraudia, you're hilarious! what's your daughter's name? it must be really pretty! i've been telling everyone our names cos i don't care... we're totally still using them... we've picked out Eva (from bibi hawwa) for our girl and gabriel (from the angel gibraeel) for our boy. the names have to work from a hungarian and a pakistani perspective, christian and english traditions, so eva and gabriel are perfect. i have a cousin already named Mikyle otherwise we would have gone for that. of course, we still have to get married and then actually have a kid.... :p
Re: Baby Names
I am not telling anyone the names i like ![]()
seals her lips and throws away the key
and yes, it has happened to us (my elder brother/bhabi) once, and so we learned our lesson.
Re: Baby Names
thats harsh!
my younger brother keeps going on about how gabriel is "his" name and i'm like, dude, a) its not cos we thought of it first, and b) i'm procreating before you are, so, haha!
Re: Baby Names
My brother's going for really unique names , and htey all gonna rhyme (unless he has a girl :p). sgc..u never know... ;)
Re: Baby Names
wouldnt that be awesome
sara having a baby!! ![]()
sara jaldi karo na! ![]()
Re: Baby Names
man if he has a baby before me, there will be trouble in the fam! he's only 23 and still just dating. haha
some other names i know that are unusual to me -
for boys: aryaan, saahir, talha
for girls: sidra, anoushka, shazdeh, lina, eisha
i think if you live outside of pakistan in the west, you need to have names people here can pronounce without mangling completely.
Re: Baby Names
when my first cousin had her baby (my phupi's daughter) my phupi proudly announced to my parents "I stole your grandson's name"--can you believe it my first cousin i was so pissed!!
sometimes my MIL doesn't even tell the names to other she will be like he is syed and he is haider...
one time this lady asked me what the name meant and what they were i boldly told her you can't take those names I have a copyright and a patent on them--she seriously believed me!! ha ha wouldn't it be cool if you could do that...copyright....
Re: Baby Names
so what name is it? what does it mean?
Re: Baby Names
it wouldnt bother me if someone "took" the name that I liked for their child. I would do the same if they had a name that i liked. afterall there are only a few good names out there...why limit ourselves.
Re: Baby Names
I really didn't know that people were so secretive about baby names!
I had a really close friend in undergrad and when we'd talk about the subject, she would seal her lips. I would pester her to tell me, but the girl wouldn't budge! Meanwhile I would blabber out what I'd like to name my kids, you know just toying with the idea, nothing set in stone. It would distress me to no end that should couldn't tell ME the names. Loser :P She's still like that and seeing the trend in this thread, she's not the only one.
