Baby/Infant Care - Advice

I am a mother to be inshallah in another month and wanted some advice from experienced mothers/fathers who can give out tips. My one specific question is regarding baby wipes. Several people have suggested not to use baby wipes during 1st month as baby’s skin is ultra sensitive and chemicals in wipes may cause a rash or what not. They advised to just use tissues instead…and also recommended using ViVA kitchen towels as they are fairly softer than the rest. Just wet it and use to wipe. Anyone agree/disagree?

Also any tips on training baby to sleep through the night? I might be asking for too much here…but I guess it doesn’ t hurt to ask. I appreciate all advice.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

Oooh and what brand diapers do you recommend. So far I have gotten a 152 pack of huggies newborn size diapers (Only cuz they were on sale at Target).

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

ok once again im not a mother...but i practically raised my niece and nephews :)

in my opinion pampers are the best diapers....but huggies are cheaper (afterall all ur gonna do is throw em in the trash)

any wipes will do...just make sure they are w/o fragrance. i dont recall the wipes giving any of the kids a problem.

my sister lived by this book "solve your childs sleep problems" by richard ferber. she used these sleep tactics for all 4 of her kids with much success.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

the best thing is to always use water.....stick 'em under the tap....but I did use Pampers Sensitive Skin Baby Wipes for Noor.

And I always used Pampers Cruisers -- most comfortable......
Got my sis to use the Newborn Swaddlers for her lil guy.....

Tried Huggies but found that they always leaked....

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

Try balls of cotton wool in water, luke warm water instead of wipes. I remember the midwife suggesting that and to be honest all iv ever seen used on newborns.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

I bought huggies only once for my daughter but they leaked.
I think pampers are the best.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

really depends on ur baby on wat she/he is sensitive to. my son was sensitive to pampers! he used to get rashes all da time until i changed his diapers to a local cheaper brand :D
and as mentioned by miss mohabbat i wud advise using cotton balls dipped in lukewarm water for wiping da newborn. once da baby is not so "fragile" juz wash her/him under da tap! its so much more hygienic. i only used baby wipes when i'm out.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

i'm with muzna on this one. stick them under the tap - they're so tiny at that age anyways, that it's easy to do, and wash 'em with water.

it's recommended that you don't use wipes until the baby's at least six months old, because their skin is still so sensitive and they're more prone to getting a diaper rash. but i mean, if you're outside, and don't have anything to use, then sure - using wipes once or twice would be alright.

as for training baby to sleep during the night - there's really no magic way of doing that. everyone's baby is different. some children sleep through the night as early as 3/4 moths, while others still wake up when they're 12 months old.
it depends on how comfortable you are with it, but when the baby's sleeping try and place him in the crib, especially at night so he gets a better understanding that when i'm in the crib it means it's time to sleep.

other than that..don't worry, you'll do fine =) it's a learning experience everyday...

ohh..i just remembered - when musa was just a little one, i'd use those baby wash cloths to wipe his bum. just make sure to wash them after you've used them, hang it out to dry, and you can use 'em again!

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

ya gotta be careful when changing baby boys, they like to mark everything.. :bummer:

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

my bhabhi just had a lil girl and she's been using wipes since day one (my neice is 7 weeks Mashallah this week) and so far she hasnt developed any nasty rash or anything.. I hope i dont jinx her or anything!

and my bro gets huggies for her as well.. they had issues with one pack because i believe they may have been for boys or were a bit too big for the lil one.. but she's back on track again!

one month to go!!! u must be so excited... ive got two... the waiting is killing me..

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

Please use wipes either huggies or pampers anything will work depending on ur baby's skin

ITs cold season so don't put her under tap till he/she is 1 mth old ask doc they don''t recommend it
Don't use tissue they have more chemicals then wipes.
FOr sleeping remedies give baby a pacifier for 3 mnths otherwise it totally depends on baby what he/she likes.BOuncer or bassinet might work because of vibration but i don't think so little babies can understand that.
If u are extra careful just use extra sensitive wipes they go fine with my 2 babies.
I used huggies bcoz pampers didn't suit my daughter so its totally ur choice.
u can read book"WHAT TO EXPECT BABY"S FIRST YEARS"nice one

BEST OF LUCK

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

are u having twins congratulations sadzz:)

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

I use Pampers, they never leaked and for the wipes, I used Pampers Sensitive Baby wipes for the first few months and now I use Nivea, Penaten watever is aviable.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

I never used wipes unless we were outside home.
Nothing can give u as clean feeling as water....in my case at least.

I almost always used Pampers for all 3......proved alright.

As for sleeping.....there are no magic words. Sleeping through the night is almost impossible for infants as they really get hungry. But don't worry....time will fly by....:D My youngest is almost 3 n i hardly remember those sleepless nights which were a major issue for me back in those days. :)

Wish you good luck!:)

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

Thanks for the great advice guys. As you can tell im getting closer & closer...im super excited to meet the little guy, but also nervous. Yeah I didn't think there was any 1 trick to making baby sleep thru night, but doesn't hurt to ask just in case :)

Sadz, we are very excited and just waiting now, as its getting tough now with aches n pains. Inshallah as long as I have a healthy boy, that's all that matters. Best of luck to you, inshallah time will fly by quickly for you and your little bundle will arrive.

I had baby shower over the weekend and received some wonderful gifts, also received lots of baby cleansing items. I will try the wipes I received, but I might just try the stick him under the tap in the beginning.

Someone one mentioned not to put baby in the tap in winter.

Muzna/Afia - Did you do that during summer/winter. I will ask my doctor before I leave the hospital Inshallah. Just needed to hear what other people are doing/have done.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

though i am not a mother but i have seen my sisters always used cotton wool for first few month and than johnsons bayb wipes but as other people said it depends on each individual and with nappies i think pampers are best and to put them to sleep you can ask your mid wife there is a bayb bath i dont know what it is called i can ask my sis in law she used that and the best thing i have noticed is if you bath your baby at night they sleep well, rest is up to Allah hope your bayb is healthy and turn out to be a good person in future Insha Allah and good luck

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

Water temperature can be controlled.....so even though it was winter when Noor was born (early February), I still used water. Think about it.....people that live in much more difficult conditions raise their kids with fewer conveniences.....those kids do just fine.

The cotton wool is a farce! I watched some other new moms follow book/doctor advice. They would use cotton wool....dip it in water.....wipe the bum.....more wool....more dipping.....more wiping. Gimme a break! Take a look at your own bum....does it look fine? Does it feel good? Do you think your mother used cotton wool???

And never, ever, ever give your baby a pacifier!!! You do it once and you are doomed.

As cute as they look, I never let one come near Noor. Nor did I let my sister use one with Sufiyaan. My mother warned me against them.....all the germs they carry, plus the habit that children form, sometimes kids will not take much needed nourishment and will prefer the pacifier, and there's the dreaded disfigurations of the jaw/lips/teeth that can be caused by pacifiers. Too many risks.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

One of my colleagues used to take pacifier out oft of mouth of baby and throw in the dustbin before talking to mother.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

I agree with everyone that Huggies leak. I preferred Pampers as well. I used wipes from day one and never had problems, but I also washed their little butts under the tap as well. I always used a rash cream after every diaper change and used baby powder. My daughters never wanted a pacifier and I was happy about that. They also never wanted a bottle. I think their teeth turned out beautifully as a result.

Maya started sleeping 7 hours straight through the night when she was almost 4 months old. So she was a great sleeper. I think teething made her wake up a couple months later and want to nurse every couple hours. My piece of advice would be that once your baby is 6 months plus, you should try to get them to sleep through the night. If they wake up and you feed them, they'll keep waking up every night, especially if you breastfeed. It's important to establish good sleeping patterns so you won't have to go through a 'cry-it-out' period of sleep training later on. We just got through that with Maya since I weaned her and she is still not sleeping through the night at 19 months.

Re: Baby/Infant Care - Advice

Muzna,

My childbirth Class instructor said the same thing about pacifiers. But she also said that another reason to avoid pacifiers altogether is that they might stop breastfeeding, if they get used to liking the pacifier. Not sure how true it is, but it makes sense. And I agree about its cleanliness.

Just yesterday I was talking to my friend how when people come to visit the baby I want to make sure they wash their hands before handling, and she scoffed at me. She said its good to let the baby be introduced to germs to build up its immunity...this coming from a resident...I was like hmmmm.
