baby flu

Hey
My lil girl has caught bad flu along with some congestion and I believe her throat is aching. Its been almost a week and she has not taken proper solid. How long is it going to take? Her pead said she doesn’t need to be on anti biotics yet alhumdulilah. She is just taking milk and not even water. This os depressing me :frowning:

Re: baby flu

Is she down with the flu (influenza) or a cold? Those are two different things. Does she have a fever and is she throwing up?
When kids get sick they sometimes only want their milk, which is fine .. it will be back to normal when she’s feeling alright.

Wendy is right, cold and flu are diff. If she doesnt need antobiitics then it is provably just a nsty viral that is just going around. When she is feeling better she will ask for food but keep her hydrated because it will help thin out the mucous. Sit with her in a steamy bathroom, keep the humidifier running. Baby vicks help.

baby flu

The ladies are right…true influenza/requires antibiotics…sounds like a nasty viral. Moodie have gave some good tips…unfortunately, you’ll just have to wait it out and let the viral do it’s thing.

Hope she feels better soon…it sucks when kids are sick

Re: baby flu

^ yep what everyone else said. Flu is dangerous :frowning:

Give her fluids.. Lots of it.. You can also try jello, popsicle, ice cream.. Just like adults lose appetite when sick, kids do too. Don’t force it on her.. Give her whatever she takes and that’s all

Re: baby flu

If she is taking milk, keep giving it to it, she will get nutrients from it. If your baby is over 8 months, try yakhni.

Re: baby flu

She took yakhni and honey with lukewarm water in her feeder today. Allah tera shukkar. She still has terrible cough though along with fever. I do give her steam and keep the humidifier near her cott at night. God knows wht its taking so long

Re: baby flu

Does anyone know desi totka for cough besides honey, garlic with pepper? I hate hate hate giving her all those yucky syrups :(.

Re: baby flu

We put honey in the milk. Try that. Other than that it will take its time, just make sure she is hydrated and getting enough sleep.

Re: baby flu

give honey if your baby is above 1 year , yakhni and soups , steam but flu takes it time so you have to be patient

Re: baby flu

i gave her yakhni and it did help. you are doing fine. you may try clove water aswell. i.e. add a clove in a cup.of water and boil. it will soothe her and make her feel better. honey in milk. if you want to stay away from syrups, no harm in trying these.

Re: baby flu

My mother in law roast Ajwain and than grind so it turns powder she puts little in milk and rest just put it a malmal ka kapra and pin it on the shirt. Ajwain smell is really strong and the more babies smell it it’s better for the cold. I didn’t believe in it in the beginning but have seen the results and i am convinced it’s the best desi totka.

Re: baby flu

I got these joshanda packets from a desi store and would add just half tsp of joshanda in 30ml water and gave it to him , he reacted well to it , just three days of this , twice a day and the cold was gone.

also tried giving some lemon tea , it soothed him in times when he got throat infection and coughing ..

Re: baby flu

Okay so today she has been prescribed anti biotics. I was dreading this. Is it because I did not start her cough syrup on time? I was reluctant to giive her medicine. Was just trying my luck with totkas. Thanks for the totkas ladies. I feel like a terrible mother. How bad are antibiotics for babies?

Re: baby flu

There is no cough syrup for babies. If it is not viral then she needs the antibiotics. She will be okay.

Re: baby flu

Someone suggested rubbing olive oil on the chest and feet. I’m not sure if it works, but there’s no harm in it.

Re: baby flu

It does work. I think thats what saved her this far as I’d massage her daily with olive oil through out these winters. Just got lazy recently as I m pregnant again and wasn’t well myself. Anyway, thanks for all the totkas. I am giving her antibiotics now as directed by her pead. And lusi here in pak they do give cough syrups to babies :s. I wasn’t very keen and relying on desi stuff until now and hubster blames me saying had I given her medicine grom day one she would have been better by now :/. I am leaving for a place now that’s covered with snow. Hubster is insane he really wants to go.

Re: baby flu

my elder one has been coughing for two weeks now. and i have tried everything from toykas to syrups and antibiotics and vicks and honey but nothing has helped so far. and her cough is so bad it would just break your heart. now either its viral.and would go on its own time or she needs better antibiotics.
it is not about being a good or terrible mother at all. we want and try to do our best for our babies, the best that we can do. babies get sick and get well too. i hated antibiotics too, but whatever cures them in time is better than prolonging their illness.

Re: baby flu

For kids with chronic cough for which totkas don’t work please get them checked by the ped. I let my kids cough worsen to the point where he was at risk of developing asthma and needed aggressive treatment.
i keep on hearing how mothers don’t want to give their kids anti biotics, but when it’s needed it’s needed, as long as you are going to a good peadiatrician who is capable of figuring out the underlying cause of the illness.

Re: baby flu

My baby had worse thanthis about 2 weeks ago. He needed anti biotics and he didnt eat not just during his sickness but 2-3 days even after. AH he is okay now. It gets stressful but try to go wid the flow ie her needs. She ll eat when she is ready IA
