Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

It all depends on the height and weight of your child. I had to keep switching between different brands. In the beginning, it was Pampers, then Huggies (cause he started leaking in the Pampers cause his height grew so they became too small despite it being right for his weight) ... so I went from Pampers, to Huggies, to a few different no-name brands, back to Pampers and now he's been on Huggies Stage 5 (despite being in weight stage 3) for the past 3 months.

It took me a long time to figure out that his belly button must be covered by the diaper in order to avoid leaks ... and just cause he's in a certain weight range, doesn't mean it will fit him, especially if he's way taller.

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

^ Thanks, Mehnaz! I just want to stock up for that first week or two after delivery. After that inshAllah, I'll be able to get around and get what I need. I just don't want to have to worry about it when I come home.

So I'm thinking diapers, diaper rash cream, wipes, baby powder, baby soap, baby shampoo. Anything else?

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

honestly, i haven't used rash cream even once. i lather him up with vaseline and it works just as well.

when he was a newborn, i put him in pampers. they are pretty good.

just be prepared in case you have a boy. you'll need the number of a doctor who can perform a circumcision and will need baby tylenol as well.

did you figure out a stroller? my bff is going with the uppababy vista. the 2010 model has several improvements over the 2009 one.

do they make any car seats that can be used for a kid till they turn 2 or 3. What abt strollers... I don't mind spending money on a good one but I would like to be able to use it for a few years...

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

strollers usually go by weight, not age. most of them go up to anywhere between 45-55 lbs, i believe.
car seats you have to upgrade- infants have to be in rear-facing seats until they're 6 months old, i believe, and then they move into forward-facing seats. these too are determined with the height and the weight of the baby but i'm not sure how frequently you would upgrade your car seat.
also, since you're coming in from abroad, wait and buy your stroller/car seat here to make sure they pass canadian safety standards. these do vary from us standards in some aspects and also your warranty might not be applicable between us and canada.
if you buy a travel system, the frame of the stroller can accommodate a car seat, bassinet and the stroller sea; so this makes them more versatile and the theory is you don't have to disturb your sleeping baby if you need to move them from car to stroller and vice versa.

I always used Huggies because I don't know some how Pampers always leaked.Well thats my personal experience. And for an infant car seat you have to change it after 6 or 8 mnths or if baby is heavier you can always change it to front facing.

guys I kinda have a list figured out for the most part but the most big ticket item for me is a travel system and that is becoming the hardest part to get...

I would like to get something in the $250-$320 (CAD) range.... and I guess for right now the only thing I am looking at after safety is that it should be lightweight.... I might be using the stroller and car seat on my own so don't need anything too bulky or heavy.... pls advise...

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

look into either the Bumbleride Flite (coming in April), or the Mutsy Transporter (in stores now).
they’re both carried by canadian retailers so you can check them out once you’re here.
both are lightweight and work with bassinets or car seats.
the flite is $250 US, so in your range for sure. i’ve even seen it online for $150-something brand new! and Mutsy is a bit pricier- around $400 US but might still be worth a check out. I think they’re also on sale right now.
make sure you visit a store and test drive them before buying any kind of stroller!

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

Immediate Must Have's
1. Breast Pump - Medela
2. Boppy Pillow for nursing
3. Changing Tables
4. Oneies with 'gloves' - so they don't scratch themselves
5. Lots of receiving blankets
6. Bassient
7. Video Monitor
8. Car Seat & Carrier - make sure your local Fire Dept installs it
9. Bottle Sanitizer - I like Avent
10. Bottles - I like the Playtex Drop in System
11. Pacifiers - I love the Nuks
12. Baby Medicine/Thermometer

For yourself - you'll want button down shirts/zipper sweatshirts so it's easy to nurse. Probably some baggy clothes since you'll be smaller - but not backto your original size. And definitely Lanolin Nursing Cream.

I believe Babies R Us has a template of registry items that you can use as a starting point. It has all the basic needs

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

Also - Huggies Supreme Diapers and Pampers Sensitive Wipes

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

For the stroller - the best purchase we made was buying a 'Snap and Go' - we used it for the first year! Rather then the big bulky stroller.

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

The most expensive items were: Baby Furniture, Stroller/Carrier, and the Pump. A Pack-An-Play is also helpful if you plan to travel with the baby.

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

Hi,
I was looking for it as I have to buy furniture for my office and home and this information will help me a lot.. This is a great resource for me.. Thanks for sharing it.. I will look forward to it…

For beautiful Baby Nursery Furniture : Nursery Furniture and Baby Nursery Furniture.

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

How does one manage if they do not know the gender? Do you buy many clothes right away or should you wait to get more color into the wardrobe? Also, should you buy the pump in advance or should you wait and see how much milk you are able to express then buy accordingly?

Items we purchased already:

crib and diaper changing table in cherry (thanks to pregnancy brain I do not remember the brand lol)
4 piece nursery bedding
evenflo car seat (the one that can be used from infant to kid)
lace bassinet
everyday cotton blanket
knitted blanket for outings

7 onesies
5 rompers
baby bathrobe
2 pairs of socks
4 gowns
3 two piece sets
3 one piece

Need suggestions for choosing the right:

pump
stroller
bouncer (how early did you start using it)
high chair (when will baby need this)
what fabric should the bassinet and fitted sheets be? cotton or flannel (I live in a very warm area and was guessing cotton..but the air conditioning is always on low:S:S:S)

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

Cotton bedding for sure I'd say cos baby will be swaddled too and u want to avoid overheating them.

The stroller should be compatible with car seat so u can easily get a sleeping baby transferred from car to stroller without having to lift them out of the car seat and then have to strap them into the stroller.

Wait to buy the pump until you've had some experience with breast feeding and know if you want tp pump, because you might not want to or have the need to.

Bouncer or swing I got at my shower. I've seen friends babies go into them pretty early but then there are some babies who hate them too, so I dunno. I'll keep you posted on what mine thinks.

High chairs are for when they start solids at 6 months so u can wait to get that. We are opting for a booster seat with tray thing that straps on to a dining chair cos most high chairs are humongous.

I've found clothing to be the hardest. From what my mom says, Long sleeved footed rimless and lots of diaper shirts are a must in the beginning more so than outfits. so we've stocked up on those in 0-3 and 3-6 but the Bean is projecting large by all measurements so the newborn size is something I've avoided buying. This is the kind of essential u can pick up afterwards too pretty easily from walmart, target et al so don't stress too much.

What about a bath tub, a bath towel, washcloths, burp cloths, swaddling blankets, etc? A couple of little hats maybe?

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

oh yes! I did get the burp cloths, bibs, swaddling blankets (I think lol). Still need to get hats and bathing supplies. Yups! Going gender neutral is quite a challenge---after a while I just dont wanna deal with the same yellow duckies lol

Are you getting several sizes bigger??? So far Ive gotten 6-9 months just because we arent sure of the babies size:)

Those strollers at Babies r us look so big--I dont even think I can lift one up lol

Re: Baby essentials, shopping, and registries

I got mainly 3-6 and a few 6-9.

We got the mamas and papas sola stroller mainly because I could lift it up easily. It takes the graco and maxi cosi car seats tho. The maxi cosi foray stroller is another great liteweight choice. Both are at babies r us, if I recall.

If u want to take a peep at my registry which I got reviewed by several friends with babes, search babiesrus.ca under my name, sans the hyphen bit in my last name. It's got other basics too.
