Baba Bulleh Shah

Bulleh Shah was many things, from a sufi philosopher to a humanist. But most importantly, he was one of the best Punjabi sufi poets of all time. It is ironic that the two best Punjabi poets, him and Waris Shah lived in the same time in thelate 1600s and the early 1700s. The west is now opening up to the ideas and the concepts of humanists and appreciating them, while we had one of the finest humanist back in the 1600s. He was a stalwart of peace, especially with the ongoing strifes between the Sikhs and Muslims of Punjab. Openly denouncing religious orthodoxy, Bulleh Shah searched for answers, primarily seeking God through his own way through his Kafis.

Masjid Dha Day, Mandir Dha Day
Dha Day Jo Kujh Disda
Par Kissay Da Dil Na Dhawee(n)
*Rub Dilaa(n) Wich Wasda

Translation:
**Tear down the Mosque, tear down the temple
Tear down every thing in sight
But don’t (tear down) break anyone’s heart
Because God lives there
*
He died around 1650 and is buried in Kasaur, Punjab. Read more about this fascinating sufi poet/philosopher/humanist, his literary work and his universal message of peace/tranquility.

Re: Baba Bulleh Shah

hareem, if you didnt like that one, here's another.

Pee sharaab te kha kabab, heth baal haddaan di ag,
Bulleha bhan ghar rab da, ais thuggan de thug noo thug.

drink sharaab and eat kabab, roasting in the fires of bones.
oh Bulleh, break into god's house and cheat the cheat of cheats.

Bhai queer Sahib…you wrote the literal meaning for thug as “cheat” or “cheater”…

**In Punjabi the word “thug” also means to capture someones heart…

like when a baby can capture it’s Mother’s heart with a smile…

the couplet above means:

*Eat kababs and drink sharaab, that could result in your bones be thrown in Fire of Hell!

to avoid going to hell…breakdown Allahs house and plead to CAPTURE the heart of The ONE who is “THE CAPTOR” of ALL Hearts!..:subhan:

Hareem Ji.................it is a metaphor......

Re: Baba Bulleh Shah

Bulley Shah's poetry has layers of wisdom locked in it, in a very crude and open way. You have to be a jogi or a faqeer at heart to appreciate the greatest Punjabi Poet of all times.

Thanks for posting Spock!

Bulle Shah's poetry is for "sinners" and not for orthodox fundementalist who may have a holier than thou attitude:

I like to quote another of Bulle Shahs work:

Bulle Shah assanh marna naheen

gore pia koi hoar

trans:

BS:) I ain't going to die

the grave tis for others to lie

Exactly Saagar, I guess I am one of those 'sinners' :)

You seem to have a good grasp on the meanings, I have started reading up alot of his poetry. Can I contact you for some explanations, dont worry I wont shoot too many questions, usually my dad helps me out but he hasnt read Bulleh Shah's poetry, so he cant quite explain with the poetic aura like you do.
